Well they’ve been the lower seed every year so I wouldn’t call it choking.Drake just continues to choke in the NCAA tourney. They’ve pulled multiple losses out of the jaws of victory the last three or four years.
And just because they did it in recent years, with Devries, they've got a new coach so recent past doesn't necessarily equate to very near-future results.Well they’ve been the lower seed every year so I wouldn’t call it choking.
When you are up by eight points with under six minutes left in a basketball game and you lose, that’s definitely choking when the lights are the brightest.Well they’ve been the lower seed every year so I wouldn’t call it choking.
Sure thing. When you are up by eight points with under six minutes left in a basketball game and you lose, that’s definitely choking when the lights are the brightest.
Was at the game yesterday and was almost sold out, Mccollum is very defensive minded coach that demands of his players are in the correct spot at all times. A little hot headed also like Fran, when a Drake player got called for a Technical foul , Which he deserved, He Slammed his clipboard on the court almost getting a T himself. Dont know if Iowa fans would welcome him or not. We will find out soon I think.
Gee…that was Ralph Miller’s one redeeming trait…he was always so even tempered (with players and refs!).Was at the game yesterday and was almost sold out, Mccollum is very defensive minded coach that demands of his players are in the correct spot at all times. Hes only got 1 T this year I believe. He usually reacts and moves on. Yesterday was a tough emotional game but it goes the other way too. I.e. he tries to pump up the crowd at home games, goes and gives high fives to the crowd after a game, etc.Was at the game yesterday and was almost sold out, Mccollum is very defensive minded coach that demands of his players are in the correct spot at all times. Did you watch games where the hoops were peach baskets?Gee…that was Ralph Miller’s one redeeming trait…he was always so even tempered (with players and refs!).
Hopefully Iowa fans will adjust.
Ralph was the best coach Iowa ever had in football or basketball. (He smoked Camel straights before he went the “more” route.) Ralph smoked during practice (on the Field House court), wore engineer boots in the court and groused as Schultz and Van Emann ran the troops thru practice. I watched many a practice back in those college days of mine, long ago.Did you watch games where the hoops were peach baskets?
Miller had an unequaled addiction to cigarettes, and chain-smoked More brand cigarettes during practices, on team buses, and in his office.
If Iowa can get Drake’s point guard, that enough reason alone to hire their coach. Was at the game yesterday and was almost sold out, Mccollum is very defensive minded coach that demands of his players are in the correct spot at all times. yes, it was a good win, and UNI has really improved during the year. Drake is just a well-coached team IMO. Both teams played tough defense.Nice win for Drake.
As an Iowa fan I would be happy with him as coach unless he proved the Iowa job was not a good fit. But I think he is a really good coach from watching Drake games. Was at the game yesterday and was almost sold out, Mccollum is very defensive minded coach that demands of his players are in the correct spot at all times. Ralph was a National Treasure who loved his golf.
2 championships in 6 years. Took a dog-shit program and made it a contender 2 years later…reputation as a winner before coming to Iowa and afterwards af Oregon State…h of f coach…"Ralph was the best coach Iowa ever had in football or basketball"
Criteria? Other than most cigs smoked.......
So it's not my money so here's what I say about this. While some schools are paying out 2-3 football coaches and 1-2 basketball coaches we haven't had to do that. This is not the time to be cheap. As a Drake fan as well while I thought DeVries was incredible at Drake ( he was) what McCollum has done is basically unheard of. Thought I saw something today that shows he's won 12 conference championships in a row now including this year at Drake. National championships at any level are hard and he has 4 and would have won another in the Covid year. If you don't play defense you will not play for him. And it's on a night in and night out basis. They bring the effort on the defensive end every single night, which is why they are in every single game. While I'd love to see him at Drake if Iowa really wants him they need to throw the kitchen sink at the guy. That McCollum has Iowa roots is a bonus. But definitely not an important criteria.
However, he does fit what I think are THE important criteria:
He belongs on a short list of potential offers.
- Young(ish)
- Success at a lower level
- Can bring players directly with him(Stirtz and Manyawu I'd definitely want with both getting majority minutes at their positions).
- Has shown he values and knows how to coach team D
- Emphasizes rebounding
I'd probably prefer him to DeVries as the financials are less onerous.
I watched Drake yesterday and I am not a fan of his style of play. Was at the game yesterday and was almost sold out, Mccollum is very defensive minded coach that demands of his players are in the correct spot at all times. His record is more than impressive for having to replace 6 players from last years team. Drake hasn’t been 22-3 or whatever very often. They play really well on the road, too. This guy can coach.I watched Drake yesterday and I am not a fan of his style of play.
How about his winning every year?I watched Drake yesterday and I am not a fan of his style of play.
He replaced the entire roster except 1.His record is more than impressive for having to replace 6 players from last years team. Drake hasn’t been 22-3 or whatever very often. They play really well on the road, too. This guy can coach.
True. But running the shot clock down to one second every time is like Ferentz. Can beat anybody but with so few possessions it can allow bad teams to stay close (Drake vs Missouri State & Indiana State this season). I do like McCollum but that shot clock always goes to one, & he’s had some head-scratching timeout calls this season (which we’re used to with Fran). How about his winning every year?
I think if he has a little different roster his teams don’t always play so slowly. His teams have always been based on great pt guard play. Hes also had a lot of guys 6-6 6-7 who could play inside or out. He really only has 1 true shooter this year and he gets face guarded the entire game now. Took me awhile to get used to the pace but watching his teams rebound and play defense the way they do every single night is worth it.True. McCollum himself stated that they're playing slower than he likes to this year because he doesn't have the shooters he's accustomed to having, and takes them longer to get a good shot. So I don't think this is exactly his preferred style of play. Just this year's team, he feels it gives them their best chance of winning. This was in an interview someone posted a few weeks ago.I watched Drake yesterday and I am not a fan of his style of play.
I like a coach who adapts his style to the personnel available. I think they call that coaching.McCollum himself stated that they're playing slower than he likes to this year because he doesn't have the shooters he's accustomed to having, and takes them longer to get a good shot. Evy had 3 in 9 and won more rose bowls than Miller did NCAA games. Both great coaches.2 championships in 6 years. Took a dog-shit program and made it a contender 2 years later…reputation as a winner before coming to Iowa and afterwards af Oregon State…h of f coach…

The other thing Drake does is they get more shots around the rim than anyone in the country. Very few low % midrange shots, layups and 3’s are the majority of their shots.True.
