Athletic director Kevin White said Duke is "looking into" attorney Michael Avenatti's allegation that Nike paid Zion Williamson's mother for consulting services while her son was a top high school recruit.

Avenatti, who has been charged with attempting to extort more than $20 million in payments from Nike, alleged on Twitter on Friday night that Nike paid for "bogus" services in 2016 or 2017 "as part of a Nike bribe to get Zion to go to Duke."

In a statement to multiple outlets Saturday, White said Duke would investigate the claim as a compliance matter.

"We are aware of the allegation and, as we would with any compliance matter, are looking into it. Duke is fully committed to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations," White wrote. "Every student athlete at Duke is reviewed to ensure their eligibility. With regard to men's basketball: all recruits and their families are thoroughly vetted by Duke in collaboration with the NCAA through the Eligibility Center's amateurism certification process."

In a statement to Yahoo Sports, Nike said it "firmly believes in ethical and fair play, both in business and sports and won't be commenting further beyond our statement."

Avenatti was charged last week in New York with extortion and bank and wire fraud. He was also charged in California with bank and wire fraud in a separate case. He has said he is innocent of the charges against him.

Williamson's stepfather, Lee Anderson, coached his stepson's grassroots basketball team, South Carolina Supreme, which was sponsored by Adidas in 2017.

Adidas sponsored summer circuit teams organized and coached by other prominent college players' families, including Indiana guard Romeo Langford's father. Similarly, Under Armour sponsored former Kansas star Josh Jackson's mother's program, and Nike sponsored a team directed and coached by former Duke star Marvin Bagley III's father.

During an October federal criminal trial in New York, in which three men were convicted for their roles in pay-for-play schemes to send high-profile recruits to Adidas-sponsored schools, one of the defendant's attorney attempted to introduce wiretap recordings, in which former Adidas consultant Merl Code and Kansas assistant Kurtis Townsend discussed what it would take for Williamson to sign with the Jayhawks.

According to a transcript of the call, which was read in court by defense attorney Mark Moore, Townsend told Code, "Hey, but between me and you, you know, [Anderson] asked about some stuff. You know? And I said, 'Well, we'll talk about that after you decide.'"

"And then Mr. Code says: 'I know what he's asking for.' ... 'He's asking for opportunities from an occupational prospective. He's asking for money in the pocket. And he's asking for housing for him and the family,'" Moore continued.

"And they go on to talk. And Mr. Townsend says: 'So, I've got to just try to work and figure out a way. Because if that's what it takes to get him for 10 months, we're going to have to do it some way.'"

At the time, White said Duke officials didn't believe Williamson's eligibility was in jeopardy.

"All Duke student-athletes are subject to a thorough review to ensure their eligibility," White said in a statement. "In men's basketball, for the past several summers, Duke compliance officials, top recruits and their families have engaged in and cooperated fully with the NCAA Eligibility Center's enhanced amateurism certification process. Duke works closely with the NCAA and the Atlantic Coast Conference on all compliance and eligibility matters. As we have stated in the past, we have an uncompromising commitment to compliance in athletics."

ESPN's Mark Schlabach contributed to this report.

Avenatti is a scumbag, but it seems that it takes a dirtbag to identify a dirtbag. The evidence points towards corruption by Nike. Are you seeing evidence to the contrary other than your feelings about the lawyer?

No, I hope its true, I despise Duke and the corruption of college bball but Avanati has a pretty extensive track record of lies and scamming that goes back well before CNN made him famous for it.

It’s not true. All those sweetheart stories about Duke and Coach K tell a different story.

Coach K. Is a hero.

Duke's AD should just have Coach K look into it.....he will be completely objective. Then if they find ANYTHING, they could just force Zion to turn pro so they can rid themselves of any problems or suspicion. Then maybe North Carolina Greensboro could lose a couple scholarships for 5 years and call it good.

I believe in Capitalism as well, and freedom...but a fair and level playing field is required for all of it to work. Paying some players under the table is neither capitalism or freedom....it's corruption.

You are a actually speaking of communism. Only a few can make deals and everyone else lives in recruiting poverty. Well done. You proved that you are a moron.

College basketball isn't a capitalist system, its socialist. A few people at the top force you to give up what you earn and they regulate everything to keep everyone else equally poor. In theory.

But, that's what you sign up for.

If you want to make money there are plenty of professional leagues available.

I'm going Amazing Kreskin here and have seen the future. Here is Duke's statement.

"We have done a thorough investigation and exhausted every resource in doing our diligence to find any wrong doing bu the University, Coach K, Zion or any member of his family as to their relationship with Nike."

"We feel confident in saying there was no wrong doing by any of the aforementioned people." We at Duke will continue to follow the rules and meet the high standards of integrity we have set for ourselves."

6'-6" and 280 lbs with a 40" verticle isnt fair and level compared to 6'6', 180 ibs and a 25" verticle. NIKE realized this and paid Zion's mom a consulting fee. She probably told them Zion's favorite color in preperation for designing his own shoe to be sold world wide when he turns pro.

what's scary to me is if this is happening at Duke and there are rogue Nike employees making these payments, it is probably happening at more schools than we ever imagined.

IF this happened, the questions then become, did any of the Duke coaches know what was going on? Did Zion know his family was getting paid off?

Think about it. If this happened at Duke:
* Coach K was not enough to get Zion.
* Playing at Duke was not enough for Zion.
* Paying the player's family was required to get a player to Duke.

A better analogy of what you are proposing would be "Insider Trading." It's illegal in a capitalistic system because it undermines a key tenet of capitalism.....fair competition. It does not limit talent, in fact it hones it through FAIR competition.

The fairness in this case comes first in recruiting.......you have to sell your school/program etc. based on the attributes that you (coaches & administrators) have worked hard (another tenet) to form that program. Then you take individual talents and compete against others.......with the same rules for practice time and game play.....and don't tell Steph Curry it isn't fair because he isn't as tall as others. He plays within the rules of the game and takes advantage of the tools he has to compete...not cheat.

I’m not prepared to believe a single word Avenatti says. Not one word.

He took a spot on the Duke team from someone who would have gladly gone to Duke to play. He broke his oath to all of the other college players who didn't take money and agreed to complete as a college player in exchange for a scholarship instead of money. I've nothing against a guy making money legally and ethically, but this was neither. If rules don't apply to everyone, then they don't apply to anyone.

Fortunately, there are still some honest folks coaching and
mentoring kids in College Basketball. Fran is one of those good guys.
Bill Self is not, neither is the AZ Coach; Yet to be determined where ol
Coach Kruzewski falls. Let's hope the scumbags don't ruin the great game of College Basketball for the questionable antics of the
nba goons.

If Duke is able to know today that he got paid, why weren’t they just as able to know back then?
They did not want to know back then. Just get Zion to play for Duke, don't give us the details. Then they can deny they knew anything.

How far back do we go? Would it be serious enough to give NC A & T the death penalty? Certainly wouldn’t happen to Duke. If it did happen to Duke, what happens to their promoter Dukie V?

Just a short time ago, there were some touting Michael Avenatti as their savior...……….LOL. Now, he's going to bring an end to
Dukeeees bb. LOL.
You mean the guy that was going to be President. LOL.
I guess he has the lying and cheating part down so now he just needs to find a personality and some intelligence

Maybe it's time for Nike sponsored schools to rethink their affiliation with Nike or any shoe company involved in cheating. Would their be any clean companies to affiliate with? Maybe it's time to get the shoe companies out of college sports.

LOL. Its a place to start but I think our pocketbooks would be much better off if we started to clean up DC and make those numb nuts have some responsibility and culpability for their dirty work.
