Curious about the talent level of the opposition. Anyone know?
One of the guys I think it was the point guard was over 30 and looked like he played noon ball at the Y. Had some old Man game.

Another guy I think was almost 40.

10 players got all of the minutes; as you can see, the minutes were very evenly distributed; not sure if that was by luck or if someone on the staff is monitoring this for Fran?

Williams played one minute? Yikes! What happened to him?

So 3 players were held out: Pemsl, Kreiner and Dailey....I assume they play the next game?

LOL on the RPI. I'll feel better when I see Pemsl and Ryan playing about 20 minutes each in the next box score. Nice to see Conner with good minutes and the overall team turnover numbers at low levels for an early exhibition.

How does Cook get 5 fouls against this level of competition and how do we not dominate on the boards? I know it's a major overreaction but we better show we can rebound before the real bullets start to fly.

I wasn't able to watch the full stream but I couldn't learn much good about the D from the early action I saw.

Williams, Dailey, and Kriener weren't going to play today. I think they threw Williams in right at the end for a garbage minute.

He'll play in the next games I'm sure

Fran put Williams in with a minute left when he took Dom Uhl out so he could get an ovation from the home crowd. It was a nice touch and the only reason Williams got in. I'm sure he will get minutes in the remaining 3 games.
Based on the one mid court camera that was used to cover the game I don't know how anyone could make any determinations about any players defensive positioning or defensive performance. Heck, we really never saw the near corners of the court. The refs called a few players out of bounds and I sure couldn't see the lines.
None the less, I was really happy to see the game and really appreciated what I saw and heard as I wasn't expecting to see or hear anything on this European trip. The announcer really made an effort to be informed about all the players. Much more so than the guys making millions announcing games in the U.S. I can gladly overlook some of his mispronunciations.

Good players individually but had never played as a team before.
The German All Star team was pretty old. Many of them were German Pro players who retired in the last year or two and it seemed to show their conditioning 2nd half.

I kind of skimmed through the game. There was a stretch during the third quarter where Garza and Nunge were in together. They looked good gobbling up rebounds and pretty decent on the offensive end. JoBo also had several dribble moves that got the announcer going throughout the game.

The opponent wasn’t THAT bad. 40 year old had 16 yr. pro career, got their first bucket and worked his way to the line a few times. YMCA looking guy, if reference is to lefty, was crafty as heck with hook shots and no look passes. Good size. Ran ball screens efficiently, defended some.

And midway through the 3rd, the boys absolutely ran their butts outta the gym. Fran’s perfect template, constantly throwing it ahead and pressuring the d. Really impressive 5 minute stretch.

Ellingson’s quick 8 in 3 possessions was a big part, but really started with Nick Baer dong Nick Baer things. A block, a touch pass for a lay-in, and a pretty steal by tapping the ball to himself. Guy really could be first ever repeat 6th man of the year. Maybe even 3peat the award.

Oh, and Garza’s starting, period end of discussion.

I think the quality of the opponent was sufficient.....it met the need. Trying to be analytical, that need is to see which players play well together, how they have progressed over the summer, and as a team what areas need work on defense....detect any other problems or shortcomings along with strengths. This one game won't do all of that, but it is the first of four to help guide the coaches development of this team for a successful run in this upcoming season.

I am not basketball smart enough to know where the defensive break downs were (other than seeing when the opponent scores) and know if those are individual or team issues. Obviously I can see when the opponent blows by our guy and gets a lay up or when they are shooting a wide open shot, but I don't pretend to know who should be in what position on every rotation....BUT THE COACHES DO! and that is the bottom line. They will evaluate those things and work on correcting them.

In that framework, this opponent certainly helped advance the cause. Good enough for me.

One stat that I am very interested in tracking during this tour is how our free throw shooting plays out...looks like about 66% in this game.....could/should be better but this is the first game on the tour after traveling. We will see.

New guys shot them well. Cook looks better.

We have to remember that we basically played two 5 man platoons with very little aberration. During "real" games, the staff will make substitutions based on who is being effective and working well with the other players on the floor.

Still, it was nice to see the guys playing an opponent other than themselves and they obviously were having fun.

Not challenging, but just curious... did you see Kriener live in the PTL? He seemed to be getting glowing reports, so I'm really curious to compare these two as much as possible (with the hope that they're both All American caliber that share the minutes down low and punish opponents consistently)

Everyone is interested in how the minutes shake out among the top 10-12 players this season, myself included. Nobody knows for sure but I would be willing to make a longer term bet: absent serious injury, Luka Garza will finish with more career FTAs then any other player currently on the roster.

As info leaks out, let's centralize what we're hearing and let the rampant speculation begin!

I'm not going to try to figure out how to link it, but will quote from twitter...

"Coach plans on shortening the rotations for each of the 4 games. Baer, Cook, Kriener, C-Will are fit for duty but not expected to play today" - Matt Weitzel

"Iowa will play four games in Europe starting today. The plan is to rotate starting lineups and have each scholarship player play 3+ games." - Iowa Basketball

I wonder if this is the first step for finding pairs/triples that fit well in the 3, 4, 5 "positions" together or if it is just random draw for who sits today? I think Kriener was likely to sit the first game if he's seeing any lingering issues with the back, but from what has been reported he's been practicing.

As Pemsl wasn't mentioned, does anyone have confirmation if he is going to play? I know there were questions about his availability.

I think we should have at least 10 different threads discussing this trip ;)

Centralizing into one thread? That's no fun!

Thank you for the tidbit on CW

Yeah, that court had a lot to be desired. Fran kept looking behind him so I assume the only scoreboard in the arena was behind the player benches? Lord....lol....

I am glad somebody taped/streamed this but I agree; I could only laugh when someone walked in front of the camera and some of those far right and far left 3's you could not see the player shooting, just eventually the ball in the air, heading to the basket....oh, well, better than nothing!

these games hopefully pay HUGE dividends come B1G season play

we have everybody back from last year except one player and we are learning to fit in 2 new players; this is going to be fun to see develop

After watching that first game, there are a couple of things that are already clear:

1. Garza and Nunge are gonna play, and play a lot. I know this is exhibition, but unless Cook, Baer and Jbo were literally not trying, then relatively speaking we can see how those 2 big guys affect the game. They are going to play.
2. With those two guys playing, it pushes Cook & Pemsl down to the 4 where they belong...and Baer and Uhl down to the 3. The only guy it likely pushes out is Wagner, as he really doesn't have 3 skills. AW's only minutes likely come when we need a real defensive stopper on an front-court opponent...and maybe that will be more frequent that I think.
3. If/when Conner does play, he is a point guard.
4. If our shooters can confidently knock down that European ball, then I think we could be about a 40% from the arc this year. This is a really unique shooting team.

Go Hawks!

I'm mainly going by body size and skill set. Garza's a true center. Kriener like Ahmad Wagner and Tyler Cook and Dom Uhl, isn't.

Kreiner is 6'9" or 10" and has a solid frame. He has good length as well. I would imagine his standing reach is higher then Woody's was, or was he not a center either. On top of that, Ryan gets off the floor better then Adam as well.

Ok, that I'm challenging. What makes Kriener not a "true center"?
Kriener can certainly play Center. Garza is bigger and more capable of banging with the heavyweights IMO. Unlike Garza. I could certainly envision Kreiner playing PF- he appears to be more agile.

I could be wrong, but I think I read that Kriener played on the wing before experiencing rapid growth at age 14-15. Garza was born under a backboard.... reports are they he sharp elbowed the delivery doctor after his ass was slapped.

Why is Cmac even playing? Wouldn't it make more sense to have guys play that will actually be playing this year? For all we know he may never even play a game in CHA.....

Might help him decide and I'm sure Fran would love to have him playing for him and the Hawks. He is also on the team as a red shirt freshman like Austin Ash.

Must be because Fran is showing favoritism to his son who didn't even deserve a scholarship. That is my guess.

This is an opportunity for him to play during a redshirt season. Once the season starts he will be a spectator during the games. Why wouldn't he play, and develop some game chemistry with his teammates?

He also has a bigger reach and vertical than Garza.

Kriener is listed as being heavier than Garza.

I believe Kriener is at least 10 lbs heavier than Garza and has a longer wingspan. Read Garza was down to 235 or so after being heavy and Ryan was over 250 but looking to be 245 or so.

To call their opponent an "all-star" team would be a stretch. There was a 38 year old PG and a 40 year old SG mixed in with what looked like mid or late 20's journeymen from various European leagues. But it was game experience and that is the point of these trips.

Positives for me:
* Moss' shot looked great and he was 4-5 from 3 I believe
* Garza's ability to be around the ball. Both ends he hustled and scrapped. Had a couple nice catches and finishes in transition after running the floor.
* Cook and Ellingson had rough first halves, but came back in the 2nd half and helped build / stretch the lead.
*Extremely limited sample here, but Connor looked like an upgrade at backup PG. For context, 3/4 of the game consisted of both teams making 1-2 passes before jacking up 3's. He has a nice stroke and hit at least 1 3-pointer and a couple jumpers.

There were the to be expected lapses in defense and rebounding, but given the pace of the game and # of wild/ deep 3's taken by the German team, not sure there any constructive takeaways.

The announcer was pretty entertaining if you are bored and want to watch the replay. He dropped a Sean Sonderleiter reference re: former greats at Iowa who played in Germany and compared Baer to Larry Bird. Credit to him for doing a lot of research on Iowa and being bilingual.
