In one of these threads I saw that someone posted the box score at half time and had 10 players who each played 10 minutes. I wonder if that means Fran didn't do any substitutions at all but played 5 players the entire first quarter and another five the second quarter.

You could put in a new five at the five minute mark of each quarter but it would be unlikely the game would get stopped at the exact time needed for all 10 players to each get 5 minutes each quarter. That may be an indication of what Fran plans to run his team this year.

7-7 FT for Garza is a promising stat because he will be attempting multiple hundreds of free tosses before he hangs up his Iowa uniform........ which, of course, makes Garza a potential double-double machine in the years ahead.

Fran has mostly been platooning just to get guys pretty equal minutes. Five minutes per quarter. I guess he felt like he had to call Garza off in the second half.

Two comments - We only shot 29% from three. Also, why does Garza get so many free throw attempts compared to everyone else.

The only area of struggle for Iowa was in 3-point shooting. The team converted only 11-of-38 attempts from the arc.

Sophomore point guard Jordan Bohannon sat out the game. Maishe Dailey and Cordell Pemsl didn't play because of injuries.

Iowa next heads to Italy to face off with a team of Milan All-Stars at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Connor situation is interesting to be sure. Definitely possible in Nov its clear the team is better if he backs up pg, and if so……..

Key is CW’s development. 2 year experiment hasn’t worked yet, he just hasn’t shown the ability to initiate offense. If that continues to be a glaring fact, Fran’ll want to jerk the redshirt I’m guessing.

BE entering his 4th year in the program, looks like he will capably fill Moss’ backup minutes. Wondered if Connor might be needed there too, but don’t think so now. Be fun to see what happens, just like in the frontcourt, so excited tickets are on the way.

Back to why I believe it’s a lock Garza starts. Absent Woody’s 4 years (which include Gabe’s time) we’ve had a long line of starting 5s that aren’t great post defenders. Jaryd Cole, Cyrus Tate, Zack McCabe to name a few, and I think Dominic Uhl, Ahmad Wagner, Tyler Cook, and Ryan are included (at least based on his frosh year). Put it this way, Fran has had to gameplan help and doubles against about half the conference teams and I think Mr. Garza starting changes that.

Theres no way you saw enough of Kreiner to make an informed decision on how good of a post defender he is.

The large majority of teams dont have much in the way of post up threats anymore anyway.

Pick and roll defense and help defense are much more important.

I kind of wondered that as well. We certainly need to see who is going to play when JBO needs a break. This trip would be a good time to start figuring that out. I have this sneaking thought that Fran is keeping Connor as involved as he can, and that he will be his ace in the hole. If we get to Dec and were struggling when JBO isn't in there, or someone gets injured, he may just pull CMAC out of his back pocket.

Agree, I think if anything its more important he, and to a lesser extent the other two freshman, play the most during these free games.

This is the only time Fran can evaluate in a real game with no eligibility implications.

I don't think stats or points scored really means much anything in these games, as minutes are by formula and Fran's letting a few guys get healthier. This is more about camaraderie, players and coaches getting familiar with each other in a non-sports setting, and it's a reward for all the hard work that these kids put in, day after day. But Fran's the one learning the most-- as he watches each player's attitude and demeanor, their level of maturity, and how best to mix and match players' talents against the really tough opposition they'll face in the rigors of the Big Ten.

All true, but Damn, Garza sure look the part doesn't he? :D

I assume they are using the international distance for three-pointers. (from the photo of the Swiss court, good luck finding the line.) If so, that is roughly 17 inches further out than the NCAA. Might explain some of the struggle.

Also using a different ball.

This is very encouraging. Going 19-21 from the line in 2 games is a great sign for the future. Especially after last year...

Down the stretch missed FTs cost us several games. This problem could be solved. If everyone picks up the pace, we win an extra 4 games on that alone.
