Europe Trip Discussion

Why is Cmac even playing? Wouldn't it make more sense to have guys play that will actually be playing this year? For all we know he may never even play a game in CHA.....

how bout maybe there is a chance he doesnt redshirt for basketball..its August 10th ...not November. I know that Connor made his decision and I respect that...he should do what he wants to.

I have no reason to believe that will change...but other things could (like injuries)...or how bout this...what if the team comes out of fall pre-season camp with Cmac clearly the best backup to JBo?

IF that was the case...play him coach.

I don't believe there is any chance Connor plays this season. They have made their decision and baseball gets the 1st shot. I haven't seen him play either sport that much to add to the discussion but others that have, have said that he has a much bigger upside in baseball.

There is always a chance..for example...god forbid JBo does down with a serious injury especially early in the season or even season ending (it happens)...IF...Connor was Fran's next best option.. I cant see him sitting said player on the bench.

Obviously CW &/or Brady are next (with Connor redshirting)...IF both struggle in replacing JBo ...even as a backup to a healthy JBo...my only point is lets put the best we have on the floor...if that is Connor...play him. Lets play for today. Obviously that is just my opinion and as I posted..its clearly Connor's decision.

And I'm not saying CW &/or Brady will not do a good job...however I have seen Connor play enough ...smart player (improved outside shooting)...really good at getting the ball to our offensive threats. Because of his size can handle himself defensively.

I understand he is a good baseball player...but I don't think he is a lock to play as a true freshman on the baseball team...I would hate to see him not play basketball & then turn around and have limited at bats on the baseball team in his first full year at Iowa. BUT yes in the end it is his decision.

Connor situation is interesting to be sure. Definitely possible in Nov its clear the team is better if he backs up pg, and if so……..

Key is CW’s development. 2 year experiment hasn’t worked yet, he just hasn’t shown the ability to initiate offense. If that continues to be a glaring fact, Fran’ll want to jerk the redshirt I’m guessing.

BE entering his 4th year in the program, looks like he will capably fill Moss’ backup minutes. Wondered if Connor might be needed there too, but don’t think so now. Be fun to see what happens, just like in the frontcourt, so excited tickets are on the way.

Back to why I believe it’s a lock Garza starts. Absent Woody’s 4 years (which include Gabe’s time) we’ve had a long line of starting 5s that aren’t great post defenders. Jaryd Cole, Cyrus Tate, Zack McCabe to name a few, and I think Dominic Uhl, Ahmad Wagner, Tyler Cook, and Ryan are included (at least based on his frosh year). Put it this way, Fran has had to gameplan help and doubles against about half the conference teams and I think Mr. Garza starting changes that.

I wouldn't put Jaryd Cole in that list, he was a pretty solid defender, although undersized.

I think we have a two headed center much like Gabe and Woody. (Minutes) I'd suggest getting a look at Ryan Kriener NOW :). By the way, it may be Garza, may be Kriener that starts, I don't care. But, much like many of our guys, I'm so very glad we have both.

I kind of wondered that as well. We certainly need to see who is going to play when JBO needs a break. This trip would be a good time to start figuring that out. I have this sneaking thought that Fran is keeping Connor as involved as he can, and that he will be his ace in the hole. If we get to Dec and were struggling when JBO isn't in there, or someone gets injured, he may just pull CMAC out of his back pocket.

From what Fran said before the trip, these four games will not be how he measures playing time. He's just trying to get everybody some minutes. Since Connor qualified to go, I think it would have been pretty hard to not let him play.

I'm very excited with the level that Connor played at, but still ok with giving Ellingson and Williams plenty of time to prove they can handle backing Jordan up this season. I think the redshirt has everything to do with baseball, but if Conner proves to be that much better....I believe Fran will play him. We've got a chance to be a very good team this year.

It's all setting up to be great for second guessing. I suppose though that it will get pretty repetitive.

I agree with thoughts about CMac--that he needed to play, and could have his redshirt pulled if he is clearly our second best option at PG (or even first, if JBo went down, knocking on wood). He also might find out that he is not good enough to play regularly on the baseball team...

I like the two-headed center of Kriener/Garza, which gives us pretty good size, different games, and 10 fouls at the 5. I see both playing a lot, almost exclusively splitting time at 5.

From the Iowa Twitter: Today's game will not be streamed. We will provide score updates and stats throughout the game

Iowa shooting 53.6% FG.

Reporting LIVE!!!! (i wish)

Moss looked really good. He could easily be a leading scorer based on this game.

Moss and Cook both could be big scorers. But Cook could do with channeling more of his inner "basketball nerd", as he calls Baer.

Excellent. Looking forward to seeing Moss development.

meh. I'm pretty sure he is sitting out basketball because he put baseball 1st, not because he thought he wasn't good enough for the basketball team...

Nunge's stat-line isn't reassuring to me so far. I like that he's getting boards and assists, but he needs to...ya know...score. Maybe he doesn't like the euro-ball?

Disappointed in their performance, the Swiss players have issued a surprise challenge to a yodeling contest immediately following the game.

Somehow, I get the feeling that the term "All-Stars" is rather ironic (or more likely, moronic).

I was hoping they would see better opposition on this trip.
