Everyone overreact

The Big 10 is a pansy conference. Win all the games or go home. That's all.

The overreaction comes from the unwarranted lofty expectations. Here's what drives me crazy about a lot of Iowa fans. They'll talk all this shit about a conference title and possible national championship and when I try to tell said fans to pump the brakes on those expectations they get mad at me. Fine. But then when Iowa starts to struggle and doesn't live up their expectations, they get all butthurt and want to throw everyone on the team under the bus. You can't have it both ways.

My expectations are Sweet 16. I think this team can/will accomplish that. This team isn’t built for a natty run. These next few years of Ulis, Ogundele, the Murray’s, and Perkins will be better built for deep tourney runs.

I thought Iowa responded well after the dud against Indiana. Tonight was a battle of two top ten teams according to Kenpom. It was a very good game that went back and forth. Illinois made a couple of more plays in the final two minutes to pull it out. Iowa had a couple of bad turnovers and bad luck (block on Joe W’s shot and the out back not counting and then the three second call on Illinois when Curbelo turned it over to Perkins for what could have been a fast break). Iowa will be fine in their upcoming games as long as they bring the same intensity as tonight.

Who knows how far Iowa can go in the tourney this year. They could easily catch fire, especially with the experience they have, and make a deep run.

Of the players you listed, unless Iowa adds some bigger pieces, those names are not going to take you to the second weekend in March let alone the Final Four. If it doesn't happen this year, it's probably never going to under Fran.

Of course, but the burden of proof is on you. Unless Ogundele shocks the world and becomes the second coming of Zach Randolph, that's an NIT-bound squad with a 10th seed in the tourney as a ceiling.
I like Ogundele, and he’s in a good spot to unlock his abilities. Frank and Luka have been working hard with him to help him get in shape and improve his game. You can see it in the way he looks from then to now, he is losing weight.

I totally agree with this last paragraph. If you look at the talent IA has as underclassman, it doesn't translate into elite level, deep NCAA runs. Some nice pieces with Keegan, Joe T, Perkins & Ulis (maybe, we haven't see enough of the last two yet IMO) - throw in CJF, Nunge, and Patrick who will be here 3 more years or so. However, that team doesn't have the talent, elite athleticism and offensive / defensive prowess to make deep runs in the Big Dance.

I'm in the "disappointed" camp. Our program has enough talent on the roster this season to rejuvenate the Hawkeye basketball era I last consider relevant. Roy, BJ, Ed....no question in my mind. I've supported the program and will continue to believe. Voicing my disappointment is likely triggered by this loss, but there's an element of effort, or capability, that is striking to me.

Perhaps the talent on the roster this season simply exceeds the talent/capability of the staff.

We have the national player of the year, an excessive amount of proven experience guys and some of you think there are better years ahead??? It’s this year or never to make a deep run!
This is the reason why I... and I think many others on this board... get upset to the point it looks like we are overreacting for many posters. If its not this year...I just have a feeling we will be in rebuilding mode the next few years again.

Weren't we in rebuilding mode the last couple years as Luka, Weezy, Jbo, Cmac gained more experience? This was the year. Can a deep tourney run still happen? Of course. But I think its slipping for a BIG title - which is what I was really hoping for this year. My fault for the unrealistic expectations but I thought hawks had all the pieces. Not sure why I thought the defense would magically get better though

All of Iowa's goals are ahead of them.

Can they win the Big Ten, doubtful at this point.
Can they win the Big Ten Tourney? Yep.
Can they make a deep run in the Tourney? Yep.

It's on the squad to make it happen. They know their deficiencies and their strengths. Fran has to switch lineups and the guys need to make the committment to themselves and their teammates that they want to be great.

Meh I got bored with waiting..............it's past time to stop not winning titles.

I never bought into the high expectations.

1. This is Iowa. We can’t have nice things.

2. This team doesn’t play defense. They never have under Fran and there was no logical reason to think they would start now.

3. They need to shoot lights out from 3 every game to win. You just can’t do that consistently.

4. Fran is a good coach, but not a great one. Plays players he shouldn’t. Doesn’t give playing time to those he should. Does not make good substitution decisions.

You think this team losing Garza is an NIT team next year?
