Of the top 5 largest cities in the US which is your favorite?

Chicago for me.
Phoenix is nice, but too damn hot. Fun to goto though.
LA is fun to visit but the smog is a killer as are CA laws.
NYC is awful— my least favorite US city of any size.
Houston seems like a random option.

LA just can't be beat.

You could be on the beach at 9am and skiing in the mountains in the afternoon.

Of course you gotta make stupid money to live in the best areas, but that aside, I'd live there in a heartbeat

NYC is a rat infested shithole. Nice to visit for a few days but thats it
LA ok I guess but not my vibe. West coast people are weird
Chicago. My hometown. But even if it wasn’t its great
Houston. Blah. Nothing special but maybe a good taco
Phoenix. Seems out of place on this list. Boston DC and Philly are much better cities

Just imagine what an incredible city Chicago would be on top of what it already is if Democrats didn't run it into the ground for the last 60 years.

People keep mentioning Houston is random, but OP clearly said list was based on top 5 populations

Chicago is what it is because sensible Dems have ran that city (well besides the corrupt Daley family)

1. Chicago
2. LA - homeless population too high though
3. Phoenix - pretty spread out and the color/lack of greenery is drab
4. NYC - haven’t been able to spend much time there but I felt like an ant trapped in a concrete barrier.
N/A Houston - never been there

Much safer than KC and St Louis, so enjoy the Royals, Chiefs and Cardinals.

that guy is basing this on sports teams and murder rates per 100,000 people. He probably loves Green Bay based on that criteria. Lmao

I absolutely love NYC. We have an office in downtown and midtown, I make it up there once or twice a year. Just love walking around the city. Chicago is great as well. LA is unique because it’s really a bunch of little towns connected by massive freeways. No one usually leaves their enclaves. My mom and dad were beach kids from El Segundo and Manhattan Beach. Grandma lived in Hawthorne. They knew the beach towns and the cities off the 405 and that was about it. Houston is great because of its diversity and blue collar attitude. Summers are horrible. My Mom retired to Phoenix. It’s ok.

Good summary.

I actually lived in Houston five years and expected.to hate it. But if not for the weather I could have stayed.

Houston is prob my least favorite big city in the US. That place is terrible.

Phoenix is pretty bad. Not terrible, but nothing redeeming, either.

An argument can be made for any of the other three.

we went to the new section of Memorial Park and it was incredible. The Shell Houston open is going to be played there now. The entire green space along Buffalo Bayou is beautiful

I’d rank them two different ways depending on whether 1) you are stuck inside the city borders or 2) are staying in the city but can travel to nearby spots outside of the exact city limits.

For me if I’m stuck in the city limits it would be:
1) NYC (by an enormous margin)
2) Chicago
3) LA
4) Phoenix
5) Houston

But on the other hand, if I can travel to nearby spots like wine regions, national parks, historic spots, etc... then I nearly have them flipped. Then it would be:
1) Phoenix (by an enormous margin)
2) LA
3) Chicago (I enjoy Milwaukee more than Chicago other than the museums)
4) Houston
5) NYC

How do you define nearby? I don’t know the area super well, but I can’t think of any of those things you mentioned of note near Phoenix.

Petrified Forest is the only thing that comes to mind, and it’s 3.5hrs away.

And I don’t know vineyards, but I can’t imagine traveling anywhere in the US just for that.

Chicago is my second favorite big city behind San Francisco. It just feels more familiar and manageable than NYC.

I don't hate NYC, but it it's just not that interesting to me once you get past the big tourist attractions. LA is not nearly impressive as I thought it would be. Miami is more impressive to me.

I liked Houston more than I thought I would.

I've only ever been to the airports in LA and Phoenix, and haven't ever been to Houston. So I can't speak from experience on any of those. But...

If I could afford to be there with no worry about money and was able to limit myself to never visiting Staten Island, then NYC is probably on top of the list. I've been there as a high school student and again in college. If you're willing to walk it Manhattan really is a cool place to explore. Every few blocks it seems like you run into something neat to look at or experience. And if you need to make quick time from one part of town to another you can take the subway. I'm actually looking forward to scheduling another trip out to visit it in the future. I could see living there, but definitely not with kids.

Chicago is a lot of fun with a ton of stuff to do. Plus it is nice that the museum district is all right there in roughly the same spot. Not quite as walkable as NYC is just because it isn't quite as dense. Still a decent public transport option, but it is more hub and spoke style, so it is much harder to get from one non-downtown area to another. It is fairly drivable though, if you don't mind being stuck in traffic, especially downtown once you learn that you have to hit the gas pedal before the light even turns green. I enjoy visiting and could probably handle living there. But with kids I'd be out in the burbs instead of in Chicago proper.

LA seems like a cool city and there are a ton of tourist things I'd like to do there. But with the lack of a good public transport I'm not sure that I'd enjoy driving from place to place to visit the things that I'd like to. Much better weather. I don't think I would fit in with the LA lifestyle though if I was told to move there.

Everything I've heard about Phoenix is that it is hot, is great for retirees, plus has a ton of spa resorts and golf courses. I don't really care for any of those, so I don't really have a reason to visit unless I get sent there for work. I guess if I got relocated there I could stand living there even with a family. But I don't know if I'd be happy.

Houston is in last place for me. I guess it would be neat to visit mission control. But I don't know any other reason why I'd want to go there when Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio would probably be more preferable in Texas. If I wanted to choose a place to live with my family it might move up a spot on the list though.

South Rim of the Grand Canyon is 3 hours away as is Joshua Tree NP. Seguaru NP is only about an hour away. Montezuma NM is about an hour and fifteen mins away. Red Rock State Park outside of Sedona is about an hour and a half.

Then you’ve got three great wine regions nearby Phoenix with the Verde Valley only about an hour and fifteen mins away, and the Wilcox and Sonoita wine regions both about 2.5 hours away. Sonoita has the best wine but the Verde Valley has some more “interesting” wineries like Cadeucus and Merkin both owned by the Tool frontman and Page Springs and Javelina’s Leap.

While I would probably choose to live in Tucson over Phoenix (despite being further south it’s higher in elevation and is both more beautiful and substantially cooler in temp), Phoenix makes a good “hub” for a trip to the region Plus it’s obviously where you will most likely fly in and out of. And I never just stay in Phoenix, I’m constantly roaming through Sedona, Flagstaff, Prescott and the wine regions while there. Plus there’s a pretty decent casino resort in Tucson to stop off at.

Just throwing a top 5 out there. I would go with NYC on that list.

Seattle
Portland
Washington D.C
San Francisco
Denver

Spent lot's of time in the West Coast cities for work.

I like cities where it's great to be outdoors. I would never have put DC on the list had I not lived there(still close by). Lived in an awesome neighborhood, trails and greenspace everywhere. Food has definitely improved in the 25 years I have been here. Denver, love the mountains.

Chicago is the birches' favorite place to go for a girl weekend. We haven't been for several years now but still laugh our asses off remembering prior trips.

NYC is 2nd for me. I've been twice and loved the energy and the vibe. I'd love to go for a longer stay but Mr. Birch would rather die than go to NYC. Too many ****ing people for him.

I love New York because each neighborhood has it's own vibe. I'm an Upper West Side person. Pretty sure.
