Fight Night

For my taste he does a lot of talking for not winning an NCAA title.

Fair, but I'll take a world silver medal over an NCAA title.

Also, you've at least got to give Gilman credit for doing all his talking face to face. He's not a keyboard warrior.

And lastly, as Gilmans said many times, he doesn't initiate the trash talk usually. He's answering questions that the reporters ask. It sounds like in this case he was asked by the coaching staff to speak at this event. And it also sounds like he got the go ahead from the coaching staff/Gable to not stand up there and give a pc speech.

To each their own though. I can see how it's not for everybody. I haven't seen it yet either so who knows how it comes off. Presentation can be a big factor.

He’s not whipping Schwab and he’s not whipping Metcalf so he might want to calm down.

I do love the trash talking and think we need more of it. We are the most hated team, might as well embrace it and give them something to hate. Talk more trash and win more matches.

I'd be shocked if Gilman doesn't beat Schwab right now.

Im more of an actions type of guy but with all of the political correctness BS in the world right now it is making our young men and women soft. We need more fire and grit we need more passion and heart. I feel young men and women growing now maybe could be turned off by the Iowa style because there is not enough fire in there eyes.
The world is not just rainbows and unicorns its a tuff tuff world they way young people are being brought up is setting them up for failure more and more. Tuffness is a quality that still has meaning now can you be Tuff and nice sure but Tuff and respectfull works also.
My kids will be brought up to learn whenever you can have F** but life is not just all F** and games learning takes hard work and determination. I feel the Iowa way stands the test of time.

Nobody has ever defended anything succesfully, there is only attack and attack and attack some more.

It all sounds super douchey.

Class and winners (not talkers) are on my list.

I will give it a watch before I pass judgement. The reports so far don’t give me warm fuzzies though.

For my taste he does a lot of talking for not winning an NCAA title. But to be honest his comment about not liking him now, I can appreciate.

But overall, he was a guest at a social event with a chance to promote and represent the program and more than anything he just sounded like a dick. Not really a good time to be turning a bunch of people off, imho.
Gotta agree with da Spoonmeister on this one. But then again I don’t watch MMA...and I don’t like scary movies.

Talking trash is expected at these events. Gilman is still every young and doesn't believe bad things can happen to him. What if Gilman comes down with terrible disease than needs help form those people he acted like jerk to. I'm all about talking a little trash but be classy.

Talking shyt safely? Does that work?
Gilman talks shyt as well as anybody, he is young, dumb and full of testosterone. No harm done. Would love to watch it.
Not sure Gilman wants a no holds barred match with Metcalf though.

It sounds like he had some good material, but could not package it in a way that comes off as funny. I mean taking on Dresser last because he is old and crippled could have been presented differently. KD leaving in the middle of the season could have been presented as "KD had to speak earlier because he is going to leave in the middle of the event as he has done in the past" No need to talk about loyalty.

With the pussies vs orange thing, he could have started calling body parts by the names of fruits and then said something about KD thinking an orange was a va jj, but we think people who where crimson and gold are oranges.

It sounds like he has some good ideas but just being a straight talking fireball and young, he could not package them in a way to get a laugh. Instead he caused a lot of tension.

Meet me in the parking lot can be construed as funny or scary weird. The if you hated me before but love me now could have been go F### yourself could have been presented as That is strange, because I feel the same way about KD when he was wearing orange as I do when he is wearing red.

I hope you all realize that this performance was designed for the consumption of the wrestler unnamed.
Sounds like PD3 is already influencing the Hawks behavior and persona and it is dragging the Hawks thru the mud. If it is the case, that PD3 was the inspiration.
On the other hand, no one is talking about what anyone else said. It is all Gilman, so maybe he is putting butts in the seats and generating excitement. Maybe PD3 will be a good thing.

Doctors are going to not give Gilman appropriate treatment and care because they didn’t like him in college but then they did when he made the World Team but then he said f*** you to those types of people?

Interesting.

I only watched Schwab, Gilman and Dresser so I don’t know what the tone or atmosphere was like with the rest of the coaches. As soon as Schwab started you could sense the tension. Neither Schwab nor Gilman are polished public speakers by any means. It was like watching a train wreck, you just couldn’t look away.

Uh sure...because Gilman was so shy about giving his opinion before this.

Why do I find myself humming Alanis Morissette tunes after reading this?

Supposedly Metcalf and Gilman were "nose to nose" after the event..
Metcalf would beat Gilman to an inch of his life lol

A lot of trash talk from Gilman for never winning an individual or team title..

Dude just won a World Silver.......... Thrashing Cruz, Nico, Nato, Ramos (twice) (all "Individual title" winners) along the way through the Trials. How's their "Individual titles" working out for them? And Gilman never won a "team title" is relevant to nothing. Just dumb.

Can someone give a background on this event? How long has it been going on, other examples of past items that have been said?
It feels like it is set up as a 'roast' type event. An event where the expectations are to push the boundaries a bit. If so don't expect the 'the team is working hard, we respect everyone we will wrestle, hoping each individual performs to the best of their ability, stays healthy, hope the other teams have great seasons as well, lets grow the sport' type of approach.

That is my impression as well.

Presumably, if the 2017 video goes live again you can find it here:

There seem to be (at least portions of?) past Fight Nights as well

**Note: the video that autoplays is the 2016 version. If you go to the site (link here) you can see other videos

Great. Never said his world silver medal isn't impressive. I'm talking about the fact that he is trash talking ALL former Hawks who ALL accomplished a lot more than he did as a HAWKEYE.

Him and PDIII are a match made in heaven. Guess this is where the program keeps heading under TnT. More classless individuals and less winning.

You're getting desperate

Cool story. Actually, quite the opposite is underway. Check back in after a few and we'll talk Michael Kemerer, Spencer Lee, Alex Marinelli, Jacob Warner...

If that's a group of classless losers, I like where we're headed....

You use that term "ALL" and I don't think it means what you think it means. Dresser and Schwab have both gone after Iowa in public venues. Dresser called Iowa "oranges," short for pussies. Schwab runs his twitter fingers and accuses Iowa of ducking UNI. As a judge would say in a court, they opened this topic of discussion. So at an event that is known for trash talking, Gilman showed up and did his thing right to their face. What Dresser did in the 80s or Schwab did in the 90s has nothing to do with it. Bigger picture...they will always be Hawkeyes but its not like they didn't start the fire on this one.

Thats all fine and true but then maybe get someone up there who has at least close to the same accomplishments as a Hawkeye as the guys he is trying to rip on.. just my opinion

Gilman: DNP, 4,2,3 (World Silver)
Dresser: DNP, DNP, 4,1
Schwab: DNP, 1,3,2 (World Bronze)

Gilman didn't win it but he stacks up fairly well. Also, he didn't knock what they did as wrestlers...only as coaches and specifically the crap they were talking.
