Flat tax is going to pass in both Iowa House and Senate

You are going to have to provide a lot more information about your financial situation to give a serious response to this question.
Are you saying the more you make the more you should pay? If so, why should people that earn more money have to pay more for the same services?

State employee wages and pensions in Illinois would make even the most liberal among us blush.

yes, JHC thats how the federal code works. The problem is all the "exceptions" and "loopholes" benefit the very wealthy.

Most of the savings we built up will be gone in a few years, then will have to jack up the rates, then have people leave, its a never ending curse, need good financial management, I really think Reynolds will go down as one of the worst governors of Iowa.
Reynolds is already one of the worst.

In my lifetime... she passed Chet Culver when she decided wealthy folks needed a welfare check so they could send their kids to private schools.

Pity the poor fvcker who follows her to Terrace Hill!

I think the governor’s point may be that too many people were fleeing Iowa (for tax free states) so to become more competitive & retain some of the population base…she’s supporting a lower flat tax and no tax on 401K and IRA withdrawals. Older Iowans buy stuff to help support Iowa’s economy:)
Nobody flees Iowa because of the tax rates.

Are you saying the more you make the more you should pay? If so, why should people that earn more money have to pay more for the same services?
Because they are benefiting more from those services and have the capacity to pay more. We all want the strong military but that is expensive. That military is a big part of the reason that people who make more are able to make more so they should contribute more to it since they are benefiting more from it. The tax code should be written to encourage (or force if you want to use stronger language) super wealthy people to reinvest in society and not just stash it in an offshore bank somewhere or some untraceable cryptocurrency. We used to do these things and we became the world's leading superpower. We don't do this anymore and now we are being passed by other countries. Countries that are making massive investments in themselves, btw.

Well, Iowa wants a flat tax. Illinois has had one since the 70's and the lack of ability to adjust the tax code to meet the needs of current demands is probably the number one factor in Illinois' budget issues. And now Iowa wants to go to that exact same funding mechanism. But sure, it's all nonsense.

Reynolds will be dead with her one brain cell sitting in a pickle jar before residents realize what they voted for.

Its simple math you need tax dollars to operate. We had a couple good years of the ag economy, and we cut income tax rates in 1/2 to flat tax rate, and eliminate almost all tax on seniors. So needless to say the math doesn't work. Now Reynolds team, did threaten all the counties to jack up their assessment to increase property taxes but it is no where near enough. There is 3 ways to get tax dollars in, Income tax, property tax, sales tax. Something is going to have to give, as the surplus that we had is gone, and we have budgets that are underfunded. The education costs for her private school vouchers is skyrocketing. There is a major clean up in aisle 8 right now.

Agreed, when the Iowa budgets start to get difficult for them then brace yourself for a healthy state sales tax increase.

Wrong. Pensions for public employees is the one of the biggest issues in Illinois which speaks to the largest problem. Spending

I also believe the "Homestead Exemption " disappears so the State gets a larger share of property tax revenue.

Residents of Mississippi North that don't realize problems lie ahead are in denial.

Wrong. Pensions for public employees is the one of the biggest issues in Illinois which speaks to the largest problem. Spending
It's not spending, it's both. If you are going to spend a certain amount, you need to raise a certain amount of money. Now, your solution can involve cutting the amount you spend, for sure, but that doesn't mean that is the only problem. The problem is, there isn't enough money coming in to pay for the spending obligations that exist. The other problem is, they stole from the pension fund and never put the money back which is what has caused the shortage in the first place. So when people like you say, "Cut their pensions!!!" You are are doing the same thing as intentionally burning someone's house down and then demanding that they pay to fix their house because you don't want to look at a burned out building on your street.

Coming soon...The Dim One will be taking another stab at reducing IPERS benefits very soon.

Can't have those teachers, public service employees, and police officers collecting what they worked decades to collect.

So....its not how it works.
it's like this:
one team plays with hoops that are 6 feet wide, plays with 5 players, and pays the refs salary. The other team has 2 foot wide hoops that are 12 feet high, and they can only dribble 2x.
The first team are the ultra wealthy that have convinced the poor they are actually working for them.

Many more people might come to Iowa because of the lower tax rates...you have to be insane to reside in Caifornia or New York if you have any degree of flexibility...and why would you ever run a small business in either of those states if you had any other choice??

Sure, sure, sure, sure. People are just flocking to the Hawkeye state. It's a population explosion!

You're one of the dupes who bought into the lie that people poorer than you are stealing your money when all along it was the wealthy. You're another MAGA voter that the rich thank for your service to making them more money.

Or just cut services.
Yes because there is so much to cut, you realize they only have 3 employees in the department for Unemployment, it is taking 2 years to get either new clients signed up, or to switch over when there is a purchaser of a new business . . . so I guess you are right, they are cutting services

Please explain how any either those States has businesses that thrive then? Those states are filled with corporations, medium sized businesses and small businesses of all types. Many of which do quite well. I get it. Taxes aren't fun to pay but people act like it's the only factor to take into account when choosing where to live or have a business. Not so.

Nobody is "stealing" anyone's money except for uncle sam. How they obtain it and use it should be everyone's business and should be scrutinized.

Not taxing people into oblivion as you would like is not "stealing" money.

I think she bails after 2026 and doesn't run for another term. The numbers don't lie. The bill for the tax cuts and frivolous spending on things like school vouchers will be coming due. She can exit in 2026 claiming she's the best governor ever and leave the mess to someone else.

People aren't moving to Iowa, and they won't start moving to Iowa. The only thing keeping the population of Iowa on a slight uptick is the rise in numbers of brown people.

Yes. I own a small CPA firm in Iowa and dealing with Iowa Workforce to set up a new business for state unemployment is a joke. The most recent one we did took 10 months to get set up in their system, which was actually an improvement from others.

Interesting because I see 9 different names receiving state wages in 2024 in IWFD unemployment.

Tell me, exactly what age group, nationality, income level population would/are moving to this State?
Who's the target with this tax plan?

Why should rich people pay more than less rich people? I mean that seriously. Make the case.

I think the most fair thing is to have a certain level that is not taxed (say 50k for a family if 4) then everyone is taxed at above that at the same rate.

The rich are still paying much more for the same level of services but as a percentage of income.

One could argue that we should all pay a fee based tax or a consumption tax. My preference actually.

I cannot see how it makes sense to have the top 50% paying all the taxes. From a fairness perspective. I dont think that the rich use that many more services to justify the taxes they pay.
Ok I’ll play but only once. The guy making the 10 million has enough to pay for the politicians to make the laws that benefit him the guy that makes 55k can donate $5 to his politicians. Who wins????

Both if the elected official has character and votes without respect to individual influence. Since they get their candidate of choice.

When I donate to a candidate it is so they are able to do what it takes to get elected. I dont donate with any illusion I'm getting to influence the candidate.

But point taken, if I were to give much more, i might feel different. There are limits on personal contributions btw.....

I want a commitment from you not to drive on any public roadway, drink any publicly provided water, and you have to use an outhouse. You don't want to pay, you don't get to play
