Florida people, tell me if this anti woke stuff is for real.

Desantis didn’t write it, a black person who was on the United States commission of civil rights whose ancestors were slaves wrote it
Are you of the belief that black people can't be wrong on the subject of slavery?

Well I am going to agree with the co author who offered this:

Williams told ABC, “It is the case that Africans proved resourceful, resilient and adaptive and were able to develop skills and aptitudes which served to their benefit, both while enslaved and after enslaved.”

He and another member of the working group, Dr. Frances Rice, added in a joint statement: “Florida students deserve to learn how slaves took advantage of whatever circumstances they were in to benefit themselves and the community of African descendants.
That is spinning like a top. JFC

The real story is that DeSantis and thus all of Team Red are the victims because Team Blue and their teammates in the media engaged in hyperbole, twisting, stretching of truth, omitting context, etc. You know, things that have been standard politics for decades. That's the real takeaway from all of this.

The real story is not that Florida's teaching of slavery will now - or at least the perception - diminish the horrific institution of slavery in the US by presenting some of the "benefits". Even some of the right wingers like coff seem to agree that the new standard is not all together appropriate - that's the black historians fault of course - take it up with them. This is not the main takeaway at all! Focus on what some of Team Blue is saying!

Did some slaves learn useful skills as part of their slave duties? Sure, they did, most probably had to as part of being owned.

Slaves also ate food, urinated, defecated, spoke languages, wore clothes, had sex, you know, lots of normal human things. They're all true. But we don't expect a history course to cover every little detail even though they are true. There is a limited amount of time to devout to any given subject, so the most important parts of the material should be the focus. In our recent history, up until now, the "pros" of slavery, even if factually true, weren't considered to be part of the important material.

Not sure how you can make a blanket statement like that. They outlawed the importation of new slaves from Africa in 1608 so for over 50 years there was widespread breeding and raping of the women by their masters to get the numbers they needed

I'm guessing plenty of them who endured that and their children being sold off were broken and never recovered to go along with the super resilient ones. Their men who had to watch it happen too. Don't think it was a one size fits all in any way

I’m not talking about all slaves, just the ones who learned a skill or trade during slavery that helped them once slavery ended.

But the trades taught were never meant to be used when slavery ended. Most of the skills required for surviving in the regular world were forbidden or in the case of reading and writing, illegal. Slaves suspected of being able to read had their forefingers cut to prevent them from writing.

The trades taught were by people who didn’t THINK slavery would end.

I’m not sure anyone will argue slavery was a good thing (even in the articles cited). I’m sure DeSantis will have to denounce slavery eventually, which I think is laughable one would have to do so but here we are.

Trades were taught with the understanding that slaves could escape, so owners purposely kept slaves unprepared for life outside of slavery.

The only thing the left is doing here is playing to their base. No one outside of those individuals already frothing at the mouth over DeSantis or Maga or Republicans in general believe this garbage coming from our vice president or others repeating her lies. The standards are there for everyone to read and are such an obvious part of reality that is puzzling why anyone would object. Idiots in this thread asking why teach it don't want truth, they want propaganda. They want narratives. The parts of the curriculum that these folks find objectionable are called facts. Some slaves did learn these trades and skills and those skill absolutely benefited them and their family. Duh. Training snd education are good. Doesn't change that they were slaves. Doesn't change to horrors of slavery.

The other objections to the curriculum are just laughable. Why teach about slavery in Brazil? How about the fact that American slaves made up less than 10 percent of the slave trade to the new world. Kind of an important part if understanding the overall picture of slavery and how and why it developed as well as how the American part if the slave trade existed. The idea that the United States was alone in the slave trade is not true and in fact our country only played a small part of the overall evil that was done. Why the Barbary pirates? Because it is important to tell the truth and how the slave trade was developed and run in order to see how and why slavery became such a huge part of the American economy. Most Americans had no idea on the story on the other side of the ocean or that slavery wasn't new or unique to America or the new world. So what is the distinction of slavery in the US? How does one answer that question with any attempt at truth if one ignores all parts of the story.

If your personal narratives about slavery cannot withstand the truth then you are not actually worried about accuracy or teaching history at all. That you don't think African Americans deserve to know the entire story or can't handle the truth shame on you

Malcolm X was right about white liberals.

Ah yes, that pesky "there are no benefits of being a slave" narrative.

Yep. It was super easy for former slaves to get a job or start a business once they were non longer owned as property.

I would say the slaves who learned a trade were much better off knowing the trade than those who simply dug ditches or participated in Mandingo fighting.

Playing to the base is exactly what Desantis is doing. The cons want narratives about the woke mob wrecking America and how their hero is going to save us. The woke mob is after our children!!! The woke mob is persecuting white people! The woke mob wants us to be ok with rioting and looting!! The woke mob is spreading their beliefs through our school systems!!

Ah, cool. Every job I've ever I had i was taught the skills I needed without being whipped, having my children sold off, or my wife being raped.

The effort to find silver linings out of such an atrocity is baffling to me but I guess I'm not a southerner or a republican. Thank God

The Florida Board of Education is releasing new guidelines which include teaching, “Slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.

What is wrong with this??? This is completely different than Harris spouting off that Florida is trying to say slavery was beneficial. Do you not agree that some slaves were taught skills that they would not otherwise have known that could help them in their future lives outside of slavery? That is not even remotely close to saying slavery was beneficial.
Creature from the Wokey Fenokee Swamp

Did you even read the article on what he said? Desantis said, “They’re probably going to show that some of the folks that eventually parlayed, you know, being a blacksmith into doing things later in life,”. How does one read that and exclaim “Desantis said blacks benefitted from slavery!” 🙄. It’s embarrassing!
