Florida to Feds: Allow cruise ships to sail or we'll sue....

May not matter.

"Is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis about to lose Norwegian Cruise Lines from operating in Florida?" CNN's Alisyn Camerota asked. "Last month, DeSantis signed an executive order banning private companies from requiring proof of vaccination. Well yesterday, the CEO of Norwegian Cruises said his company may suspend cruises from Florida as a result."

But DeSantis still gets to "own the libs" I guess....

That would be the funniest part of this. The world, and therefore also people who run the cruise lines, agree COVID is real and it is important to protect themselves as a business, so the cruise lines are onboard with the vaccination passport. DeSantis makes COVID passports banned but demands the cruise lines return (some how he thinks this legislation will help?) and the cruise lines just pull out of FL and move to better locations. With less brawls in the check in lines and people who aren't throat deep on Trump.

I doubt the cruise lines will pull out. It’ll cost them a ton more in fuel and sailing time if you have everything leave from another state. Besides, the leaders in the neighboring states are against vaccine passports as well.

Looks like the dumb CDC guidelines are to blame.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is allowing cruise ships to resume operations this summer, but Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Frank Del Rio says that will be unlikely given the agency's tough requirements.

"I seriously doubt we will be able to stand up a vessel out of a U.S. port in July. August is also in jeopardy and it's all because of the disjointed guidelines from the CDC," Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Frank Del Rio said on CNBC's Closing Bell. "What we received yesterday was anything but a clear path to restarting."

They aren't sailing much right now, anyway. They need to get people on the ships, and the best way to do that is for people to feel safe. Pre Covid cruise ships were prone to outbreaks of viruses, particularly stomach bugs. I think they are going to get the lower deck cruisers back a lot faster but they need to rent the upper deck cabins with balconies in order to get to profitability. Those people have non Covid options to spend their vacation money on.

I don’t agree with the way he’s making his argument.... but it’s bogus to completely shut them out given the other activities that are deemed acceptable. It’s nothing more than optics. The cruise lines must have really weak lobbyists
Maybe “cruise lines” ought to become “citizens of the United States” as opposed to being registered in foreign countries. I understand their plight...but the cruise lines have chosen to forfeit “standing” for profits. Can’t have it both ways.

“We are going to vaccinate 100% of everyone onboard our vessel. We are dumbfounded, quite frankly, as to why the CDC continues to put forth onerous requirements on our industry,” Del Rio said.

So, CDC's guidelines likely "go away" if vaccination passports are required.
But FL don't want none of that.

No. In the interview I saw this morning he was referring to mask policy mostly. Saying if we don’t port ANYWHERE in the USA we don’t have to do anything the CDC says.

This is one of the industries that should take no issue with requiring a vaccine. It would benefit literally everyone. You prove ships are safe, you get those who truly want to cruise vaccinated and you keep that sector rolling. This extreme measure shit of shutting it down isn’t going to keep working. Not everything needs to have “vaccine proof” this is one that does.
I tend to agree with this line of thinking.

The CDC has now banned buffets and self-service areas, is restricting social dining, implements social distancing, and mandates guests to wear a mask during dining, drinking, and at the swimming pool. It’s measures like these that have the CEO and President of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Frank Del Rio, up in arms as he calls the requirements ‘absurd’.

I wonder if there is a concern with people falsifying their vaccine status and thus preventing a vaccine passport to allow the easing of cruise restrictions. Someone posted a tweet about selling blank vaccine cards. At this point I would be more worried about fake vaccine cards over voter fraud.

But only the people with the fake ones can really be harmed by it, so does it really matter? Yes I know vaccination doesn’t mean you can’t get it but still. You ain’t going to the hospital anymore.

Again: if they require fully vaccinated passengers, then most of those requirements go away.

If Desantis wants unvaccinated passengers, those regs may remain in place.

Take it up with the CEO and cruise line who blame the CDC, in direct opposition to what you continue to pretend is the only reality.

I'm not "taking it up with" anyone. I'm informing you that the risks the CDC is concerned about almost completely disappear with full vaccination requirements. Which is 100% at odds with Desantis' position.

It will not be possible, or practical, to meet both conditions.

Oh...so you’re ignoring the fact that there are cruise ports in many other places than Florida and the cruiseline isn’t going to ANY of those because of the CDC billshit. They aren’t saying “Florida because of DeSantis.”. They’re saying “The United States because of the CDC.”

The cruise lines aren't going anywhere because of the pandemic.

If, at the beginning if the pandemic, we’d have held on the tarmac and forbidden re-entry to the US, every international flight, and tested and quarantined all passengers like we did with cruise ships, you’d have a whole different story.

The reason the cruises have more restrictions here now is because this ‘started’ with them. IMO. When the fact is, it actually didn’t. You just had a captive group to restrict and to test. Whereas flights from all over the world came in at the same time without similar restriction likely carrying the same amount or more cases.

The cruise rules in place currently have no basis in science when compared to similar industries not treated, well… similarly.

While all of that is true, cruise ships do have a history of disease outbreaks long before Covid came along. A cruise ship is like a petri dish for infectious disease.

Good old CDC with their “disjointed” guidelines.

Seriously, the CDC has been pretty ridiculous lately...their guidelines for summer camps were insane....they had to walk them back a couple days ago

Do you know that airplanes aren’t?

We know that fomites don’t really play a significant role with this virus as opposed to say, norovirus. Which is the classic cruise ID story.

I’m not saying cruises aren’t a risk. I’m simply saying that they aren’t being treated similarly to every other mass transportation option or lodging option out there.

Perhaps then ol' Frank doesn't need American dollars to begin with. You know, its not like cruise lines didn't have a lot of "health issues" well documented long before any of us had heard of Covid.

This statement makes no sense. Either the rules are based in science, or they are not. Irrespective of "who you compare them to"

We already know that in the close quarters on a cruise ship, this virus can spread rapidly in unvaccinated populations. That simply isn't the case on airlines, when ventilation is adequate and masks are worn. And airlines were suspending food/drink during the height of the pandemic, which is something that doesn't work on cruises.

No, I hate getting on a plane. A flying tube filled with unwashed poors is a terrible place to be.

There are 2 separate issues here. Norwegian is requiring 100% of passengers be vaccinated. Regardless of where the ship departs. I’ve not heard of any cruise line indicating they won’t require vaccinations. Their beef with the cdc is that if every person on the ship is vaccinated there is no reason for the stringent mask and distancing requirements. The issue with DeSantis/Florida is the mandate regarding vaccine passports. Everything I have heard is that Norwegian and possibly others will move to ports in other states if they aren’t allowed to require vaccines. And fake vaccine cards are a huge issue because we all saw ships stranded at sea due to outbreaks when this started. An outbreak could be disastrous. Part of me understands why the CDC is so stringent. Too many people acting like toddlers showing they have no problem with lying. Unfortunately they are also faking negative tests so even the current travel requirements aren’t stopping it all.

"Fake"vaccination cards"......and many folks here believe that a Voter ID will restore integrity to elections! A reason why neither one is am "end all" as far as a solution.......damn counterfeit cards already being confiscated long before any move towards a "vaccination card" is close to a reality by ANY legislative body o.r legislative order! ...
Cards are too easily counterfeited...just like when I was 19 and I had to be 21 to buy alcohol.....

Oh but flying is ok? Bus and train travel? That’s the beef they have and I think it’s legit.

I think the argument is cruise lines in no way shape or form is essential. It's a vacation.

Not the same case of subway, planes and trains as they are used for business.
