Longtime Iowa men’s basketball head coach Fran McCaffery is parting ways with Iowa after 15 seasons. McCaffery compiled a 297-207 overall mark in Iowa City, but departs after a disappointing 17-16 season that saw the Hawkeyes miss the NCAA tournament for a second straight season. Despite the struggles, McCaffery’s job in revitalizing the Iowa program from the basement to an eventual Big Ten Tournament champion will earn him a fond place in Hawkeye basketball history in due time.

I really like our AD. Two good candidates to choose from come immediately to mind

It's the right move for everyone involved. Loved me some Fran, defended him online quite a bit over the years, but it was absolutely time to part ways.

Wish him nothin' but the best though. He did an outstanding job getting us up out of the Lickliter depths.

Exactly how I feel. I appreciate him, but I am celebrating that he has gone. I hope he either enjoys retirement or finds a role at Butler where the fit may be better.

very well liked coach. i don't think anyone at iowa has any animosity at fran which is very unusual when it comes to coaches asked to leave...
Good point, I hadn't really thought about this. There will always be those folks that are never happy with anything other than conference titles or Final Four runs, and think any coach that doesn't do that sucks. But those folks are certainly a minority group.

Fran was definitely a big part of the community and I think you're right, he's leaving as a very well liked coach. Unfortunately that's not enough to get butts in the seats, and attendance was BAD the last couple years.

Concur that it's time to move on. Fran got some good years, and this team showed quite a bit of improvement through the season - much better half-court offense and defense in the latter games.

But some bad, bad blowouts as well, where the defense was just utterly lost.

Bummer. For every Fran and Tom Davis, there is a Lick or an Alford waiting in the wings.

Fran never expected his players to rebound or play defense.
He just wanted his team to be a scoring machine. However,
that was never going to be a formula for consistent winning
in the Big Ten schedule. Hopefully Fran will enjoy his remaining
years doing whatever he wants.

Bottom Line: A new era of Hawkeye basketball for the men
will begin. Hope Beth gets a good coach who can teach the
fundamentals of winning basketball.

3 NBA players on a few rosters and effectively won nothing of note with them...you know what that would lead to eventually.

I thought him getting tossed his last game pretty much describes his entire time here perfectly. We loved the fire, he obviously cared about winning...but he simply should have won more while here.

Bob Huggins has said he’d like to get back into coaching. Just sayin’….

First call should be to nick nurse but i doubt he’s be interested.
Well Morey will be looking for somebody to blame for the Embiid & George contracts, so maybe he’ll try to blame Nurse. Getting Nurse would be a great hire. Just guessing he’d rather be an assistant somewhere in the NBA next season rather than college.

I'm sure students are lining up at the ticket window to buy tickets for next year as we speak.

I would be beyond happy with either one of those two.
As a Drake alum, I am still amazed at what McCollum accomplished this year. I also understand where Drake is in the Div I world. What he and DeVries both did was exceptional coaching, in different ways.

Will Iowa go after him? I think they will. Especially if he can bring the MVC conference player of the year with him. He should be a solid, if not spectacular, player in the Big 10. Will McCollum want Iowa though? Or DeVries?
