I expected last night's outcome, so no emotional rant here. I didn't envision more than 14 wins, so the team and Bohannon exceeded my expectations and proved me wrong in a number of areas. Indiana exposed (once again), that we are sorely lacking athleticism in the back court. This is not a swipe at Bohannon. The kid has done an amazing job, but he has 0 help. Williams and Ellingson are incapable of doing anything productive in games like last night's.

The hybrid guard stuff Fran is so enamored with has to stop. The team needs a PG who can drive, score in traffic, and defend. Bohannon needs somebody to spell him or run the show so he can slide to the 2. We gave up countless runs last night of 10-0, 12-0, and 14-2 or something like that. Fran blames quick shooting and shot selection, but what options do you have when you don't have anybody who can drive the ball into the paint and get fouled, score, or kick? You get what we saw last night, which was an offensive collapse because of the ball pressure IU put on 1-3 all night.

The solution to this problem is not Nunge, Garza, or Connor. We need a guy to leave so Fran can get a PG in here to take the full load off of Bohannon. The kid is too good of a shooter to run his legs off playing heavy minutes. It's not that hard Fran. Every team out there has 2-3 of these guys and we don't need Ulis, but we need an upgrade over Williams if this team is going to improve next season. I don't care how much other guys improve, we don't move the needle without addressing this gap. Look at what Walton Jr. does for MI. 60% of that would be a huge upgrade for Iowa.

Agreed! Great post! Fran has to find someone at the PG position for next year. Bohannon is a great player but I think he's a 2 guard more than a PG. if we had anyone capable of attacking it would open so much more for our shooters.

Sadly I think Fran is okay with what we have. We will continue to see games like this next year and the year after.

It is a couple years off, but I would take DM North's Tyreke Locure. The kid can play!

We are at least two years off from getting someone else. 2018 is the soonest.

I agree with a lot of what you said but keep in mind the 2 guard plays against taller defenders. Plus guarding the 2 guard can be much tougher as well. I like how JBo captains the team. He can pass and score and keeps the pace of play based on the situation.

Not to over hype him to much but i can see JBo as a Heinrich type player for us over 4 years. ( just a couple inches shorter )

That evans kid from Oklahoma state is exactly what you're talking about. The kid is great at driving and finishing, shooting and dishing of. I would love to have jbo at the shooting guard some and not having to do everything.

Yes a PG that can do those things. I love JBO and he is going to be a great player for the Hawks. But if Fran wants to take this team to the next level, you have to find a solid PG. Look at every other team in the Big Ten, their PG's are their better players. Look at Walton at MICH, Blackmon at IU, and etc... All those teams PGs are also their better athletes. They can attack the lane or they can dish it off. They can finish at the rim when needed.

I love JBO and I think he will go down as one of the best hawks in history, but he needs some help at the guard position. We have the post players, now we just need to get an upgrade at the guard position.

Guys I actually think he's not recruiting true PGs because he wants a team that gets up and down the court quickly and he believes in position less basketball all and it sucks because we all see the flaw, why can't he

Yeah I agree with that. I just think in the 1/2ct set to have that guard who can force the defense to collapse, will open your shooters and also your bigs for easy buckets.

I think of Cartwright back in the day. The guy was not crazy athletic, but he could handle the ball. He could cross his man over and get into the paint and either rise up for the 10ft jumper or kick it out to the shooter. He also was very good at distributing the ball at times.

Fran has missed on a couple of our guard recruits. I hope he is searching for more help in the 2019 class or 2020 class.

Agree with these posts. JoBo is very good at what he does and is fun to watch, but he is not a PG that can create for the team and the offense as whole. I admire what JoBo has done for this team when asked to take over the team and succeeded at a pretty high level too. Until Fran gets that type of player which looks to be at least two years away, we will struggle to move to the top tier of the league. Of course, we need to learn to play defense as a team too.

That will be great if he gets one of those in the 2019 or 2020 class but this group will be gone by 2020 so now what is perceived as the missing piece now may not have the wing or post players at that time. Fran has worked himself in to a difficult situation with the large classes that make the opportunity to adjust in between those classes more difficult. would like to see the 3-4 member recruiting classes so there is a little better chance of filling the gaps. Much easier said than done too and Fran has talked about the need for balancing too.

Yeah he needs to balance the classes. At some point you have get away from the 7man classes. It really puts you in a hole every 4 years.

It is nice to see Bohannon is now allowed to stay on scholarship.

We're fine, could use that Williams doesn't have back issues. Conner will be a big help next year.

I'd laugh my loving rear off if a couple (we would need a couple, not one) guys transfer and we manage to pick up A.C. Green. First, I'd love to have Green on the team, second, I'd get to watch this obsession and claims (gosh, we did better this year than I thought BUT we'll never get any better if....) that we can't improve without drastically changing our system continue for years to come.

(sarcasm) - It wasn't having one of the youngest teams in D1! It was Bohannon! Well, no..that doesn't work now....Bohannon needs help! Yeah, that's it! LMAO. - (sarcasm)

Balance classes? Agreed. Fran needs to cure up this whole transfer problem so EVERYBODY can balance their classes! I don't understand why Fran doesn't get right on that.

3 or 4 people in every class, one walk on because you get 15 scholarships and three freshman redshirt and you play nine guys a game. Rinse and repeat

I hate to ruin it for the complainers and all....not really....but now I posted something out of my butt. Hmmm, I don't see what's so fun about it.

God .... there is dumb out there. He is not a 2, not close. For years people wanted a PG that could score and distribute. Got a kid that can do that and tak

Remember you said this....Fran is a 1/2 court set guy. He is not looking to have his PG "create"...they need to facilitate the offense. This kid is really good. People bitched for the last 4 years and before that Iowa needs a PG that can score. JB can score and deal it without turning it over. That is all you can ask from a PG. Not sure what people think sometimes. He just put up some of the best numbers as a Freshman in school history and B10 history...but Fran is an idiot......Iowa fan comedy at the highest level.

4 times 4 is 16 not 13 don't know where you got that and I defied it so it says three or four, it just depends on maybe how deep that class is

Seriously, you are becoming the poster boy for why there should be a "Basketball 101" test on here before people are allowed to post.

Take the hint. 13 scholarships, not 15.

Oh my bad thought it was 15 ya then I'm wrong sorry

I'll help you out anytime. Now, this thing about a point guard. Notice nobody is talking about Wisconsin or Northwestern or some other teams who do pretty well with combo guards. See, they got one thing on their mind and it's not x's and o's. It a complainers battle cry.

You don't need to listen to that stuff. Trust me, trust Fran.

I hear you on the 13 scholarships then it should be 3 seniors, juniors, sophomore, and freshmen, and then 1 red shirting

And guys can pass faster than anybody can dribble. And Iowa had one of the Big Ten's best offenses, we struggled on defense. We struggled on rebounding. But forget getting a guy like Luka Garza to bottle up the middle and rebound...we need Meadowlark Lemon!!! :)

So down the line in 4 years we will be back to square 1 again?

JBO is a solid guard, but he is not a break you down type of player. He is a "finesse" player who will attack you from the 3pt line. He is not a threat to dribble into the lane and make a basket. He is a nice player, but he could benefit from a player who can attack and force his defender to help out. Therefor leaving him open to shoot.

While Bohannon isn't going to break down the defense and get to the rim he is far better at running the offense than I ever expected.

It is amazing to have post players who can make plays at the block. It was nice to see us go to the post more this year. I hope we continue to do that. But we do an upgrade at the guard position. Jok was a great player, but boy did his defense struggle. I don't know if he was still injured or what, but he looked like a 45yr old man out there at times.

I don't know if the distributor needs to be a point guard. Bohannon does a fine job getting Iowa into sets and taking care of the ball. Like other have said, we need a guard that can penetrate, get into the lane and take it to the rim or dish. That doesn't have to be the point guard. It could be someone like Dev Marble or DeAndre Kane who can play the shooting guard spot. That, to me would make the most sense with the current group.

Like some of the posters say above Bohannon defending the opposition SG would be a nightmare. So even if you play him at the SG on the offensive end he most likely would STILL have to defend the oppositions PG. JoBo is a PG who can slide over to SG in spells. People forget that taking Uthoff as a transfer really put last years class out of balance. Fran could not pass on getting a player like Ute but this and Jones' injuries forced Fran to rely on frosh this year. To me Fran gets a bit of a pass this year. No NCAA in any of the next few years and I'll change my tune.

Again...I am beginning to think you are just fooling around. Either that or you are 75 or 15 years old. Please stop while you are behind.

Okay maybe not Koenig but McIntosh lead the league in assists, did he not? Oh why yes, yes he did
Well Hawkeye....yes he did. He averaged less than 1 assist more per game than JB. So dammit....JB is such an inferior player as only a Freshman.

Some other quick facts for you to swallow and try your best to comprehend...

McIntosh averaged the 3rd most minutes played in the B10.
McIntosh and JB had the same assist to TO ratio
JB made 2.4 3pt baskets a game and McIntosh is not in the top 20
McIntosh also has a league high with 8 TO's in one game

See statistics are like lingerie....show somethings, but not everything. I would take a Freshman with his production per minute played way before a dude that plays twice as much and only averages less than 1 assist per game more. Be careful....I love analytics when it comes to basketball...you will lose. Northwestern has a CAREER year..so the spoils automatically go that way.

I agree, Bohannon is fine at point most of the time. We need our 2 and 3 positions to be guys that can take people off the dribble as well as shoot the 3 ball and defend. Moss is the most well rounded of the other guards, but he was only freshman and should improve. CW can't shoot and is so-so finisher. Baer is more 3pt shooter, not dribble drive guy. Ellingson struggles to defend and get his shot off. Connor strikes me as Bohannon with more size, less shooting ability or at least not the quick release. Dailey might have some potential--didn't get to see it this year playing Jok so much.
