Fran not leaving

Bummer? Why would it be a bummer? Looking at the thought process many around here have about Barta, if he were to hire a replacement for Fran it seems there would be a low chance he finds a better coach, a moderate chance he finds a similar coach and a high probability he finds a worse coach.

I don't think that, but there are a lot that recently have said they don't want Barta making any more hiring decisions, which would include a Fran replacement.

Good. Now let's keep Tyler in the fold, have a great season and land X. Foster along with some other stud recruits and take this program to an even higher level.

Perfectly stated hawkjt.......we have a very strong core of experienced players returning from a 23 win season...we have a couple of good recruits coming in (that we don't have to depend on for much of anything) and we have a couple of major recruiting classes that need to be filled that requires relationship building over time.

IF we hire a new coach we will have lost our backup PG and there is at least a reasonable chance that we would lose our east coast 3rd string PG who has not yet set foot on campus.....maybe another player or two. Then this experienced team has to learn a new system from top to bottom....going into a very difficult/challenging non conference schedule and then a brutal 20 game B10 schedule....new coaching staff would have to start a relationship up with Xavier Foster and would be way behind ISU and others in doing that.

Clearly it's best that Fran stays....I think hawkjt's post is right on the money and the only "negative" (in a sense) twist that I would put on this whole thing is about the recruiting.

This staff HAS to land a good strong recruiting class for 2020...has to. I want Xavier Foster as a part of that in a big way, but we could still have a good recruiting class without him....but it has to be good if we are going to trend upward.

Nobody besides Steve Alford has ever used back channels (agents) to gage levels of interest and in-depth offers...

So If I read the article right, McCaffrey has to tell Barta if he is pursuing another job, so does that mean if they pursue him, he doesn't have to say anything? There is no way that plane landed in IC for three hours and something wasn't going on!

I like your enthusiasm, but Fran has been here 9+ years? How often has he been able to land Stud recruits? Cook? Yes. The rest don't qualify as Stud recruits, IMO.

But I hope he can land them. I'm thrilled that I'm on the edge of my seat again during the games. There was a stretch where that wasn't the case.

C'mon, people. This article don't mean sh*t. If there really has been communication between McCaffery's posse and Arkansas, I'm sure Fran himself has enough plausible deniability that he's not going to breach his $10+ million contract.

I'm not going to pretend to know anything about the situation, but I can tell you with certainly that dumbass GB telling the ICPC that FM has not talked to him about other jobs does not in any way mean that nothing has been going on.

Which if that is true it's total crap. If Barta has anything to say, he needs to have a boss to employee meeting....not talking through the press.

That's like playing the telephone game....neither party gets to hear exactly what needs to be said and it brings in more people than need to be.

Really though, Fran has next year's team set up to be a top 25 team with or without him. The whole plane landing in IC deal is more fun to talk about than anything.

So the article is really Barta's way of telling Fran he needs to come clean with him

Weiskamp was a top 50 kids, and Patrick is a top 75 player. Just because you have an opinion, doesn't mean you are correct.

Maybe Barta's being honest, but it is just so weird that a private plane flew from Fayetteville to Iowa City, Minneapolis, and Reno on Tuesday. 3 people rumored for the job live in those 3 places. That ain't no coincidence.

They probably had a quick meeting with Fran’s agent, heard what they had to say, discussed money quickly, passed along to Fran and then moved on

This much I do agree with. This year (despite the 3 week slump) was pretty darned good overall. Next year, even assuming Cook is gone, should be as good or better. With the departures after next season, if there isn't a good class to backfill they'll lose whatever upward momentum they're building. You can't have that after a two season improvement, unless there is a monster 21 class coming in. A slight step backward, say from S16 next year to Round of 32 following year, is fine. You can't go from S16 to missing the tourney though.

There will be down years occasionally, everyone has them. It can't be every third year though, especially if the down year is the disaster last season was.

This is crap. Wieskamp and Patrick were both rated higher then Cook (and you can save the both were coming anyway response). The point is you say the rest don’t qualify as stud recruits. That’s wrong.

I like the part of the article that says Fran has to notify Gary of inquiries or talks about other jobs and by not doing so Iowa can terminate for cause. That would avoid a buyout all together. So if I read this right as long as Fran coaches through next year the buyout that had everyone so worked up over becomes pretty meaningless.

Ohhh, saucy!! I like it. Like a veiled threat. Fran tells Barta he isn't meeting w them, Barta suspects that he's lying, so he indirectly lets him know that this will get very ugly if he's not careful.

GB growing a pair!

Yeah, he was. What happened to the defense when he left? You don't have to score 15-18ppg to be a stud.

Top 50 kids don't get ranked that high on their defense. If all you have to cling to is a player's defense to classify him in the "stud" category then that in it of itself shows he was not deserving of the ranking coming out of high school.

Perryhawk, I respect you but Fran is a lost cause. His calling the referees cheats ended his tenure here as referees will have long memories and willmake Iowa pay as long as Fran is here, much like Tom Davis could not see any Chicago inner city kids after the Jim Collins/ Bruce Pearl Deon Thomas Chevy Blazer incident.

Tyler is not coming back and this program's athletic talent is fairly weak. PMac is not going to make the difference like Weiskamp did this season. Iowa needs to land several top 100 kids in the next class at PG, PF and C. Joe and CJ Fredrick can man the 2 position well enough for Iowa's future. Nunge and Garza has at least two years left in the program but Iowa needs new depth. Pemsl without a 20' jump shot is not a starter. Iowa needs at least one 6'+ PG who can actually dribble drive and shoot.

Iowa needs to land Xavier Foster and a PG like Tyler Beard or Caleb Love (or both or one and Nijel Pack) and a big man like Dain Dainja.

Unless he changed agents, Fran's agent is at WME. Also happens to represent Steve Prohm, Brad Underwood, Ben Jacobson and at least a dozen others.

Why fly to Iowa City to meet with Fran's agent? no idea who his agent is but i can guarantee you the dude isn't based in Iowa City.

You are right that rankings are not based off their defensive prowess but Woodbury was still a "stud" defensive player in College and the best that Fran had. This horse has already been beaten in other threads but there is a reason that Woodbury's years had by far the best Defenses in the Fran era. This current Iowa team would be SO MUCH better with Woodbury playing and directing the Defense. I know everyone wants to base how good a player is by how many points they score but really good teams have players that are great at different aspects of the game. Defense is just as important as Offense as we have seen the last couple of years. Offense has not been - and will not be - an issue under Fran. It's the other parts of the game that have held Fran's teams back from reaching their full potential most years.

And we all know how well Barta understands how the legal system works and how to document these things.
