Frank Garza Assistant Coach?

I think Frank has been very instrumental in Garza's development and improvement, especially over the summers. If I'm Fran, I create a coaching position for him.

He could be the male version of Jan Jenson to produce great centers at Iowa.
Cmon. The guy has his own business. Do you really think that his approach and dedication would be the same if he wasn't working with Luka? Do you really think that some 4 star post player will show the same hard work and dedication as Luka has for his dad? Luka's story and by extension his dads has been in interesting and fun story to follow. Doesn't mean we need to hire him as a coach.

Don't think he needs to be a coach. Fran just needs to talk to him and write down exactly what he has Luka do and the time frame of it. Maybe modify it for different positions and hand it to the individual players. Tell the players with this plan and a personal determination to reach your potential you will get better. Hopefully they will put in the work. If some don't they won't see much playing time.

lol

I remember when I posted this same idea 6-7 weeks ago. Didn’t get as many replies because there was still basketball being played.

Do you ever consider that 98% of this is just that Luka is a hard worker that wanted to improve. I mean I'll give Frank credit for being there and supporting his son, but most of this is what Luka has picked up from Multiple sources. I'd bet that Frank would have no interest in putting in the time or effort with someone else. When Luka is gone, so will be his dad, and his 15 minutes of fame.....

So what you're saying is most talented athletes are born that way and it's not because their dads spent tons of time with them developing their ability. (Michael Jordan) (Derek Jeter) and so on. Even Iowa's own Tristan Wirfs?

Obvously Luka wasn't just born that way, he's put in a ton of work. Just saying its more due to him then his dad, and there's no way Frank would spend the time, energy or funds he has helping his son, and apply this to someone else.

Re-read what I posted. I said Frank doesn't need to be a coach. I also said that players need a personal determination. Re-read my post.

There's no need to be sarcastic or to mock the OP or others who have posted positive responses to the idea of Frank Garza being a coach. Apparently it would be news to some of you critics that it wouldn't be the first time a player's dad was hired as a coach.

It's almost certainly true that Frank wouldn't be interested, but that doesn't make the concept any less valid. And I would venture to say that Frank Garza is a better basketball coach than Todd Lickliter, even though Lick has a national coach of the year trophy.

BTW: Great coaches love working with any kid who wants to put in the effort, not just their own sons.

It was just as dumb then.

Yeah.

You make hires like that when you are recruiting a kid, like when Steve Fisher was recruiting the Fab Five and hired Perry Watson, not when a kid you already have on scholarship is going into his senior season.

It's a cute story, but Luka put in the work. It's like saying Steve Kerr should hire Dell Curry since Steph became a good shooter while they played horse in the driveway.

Or Tom Davis when he was recruiting Ray Thompson.

Well I know Wirf’s father had ZERO to do with his athletic development. Didn’t try to become a part of Tristan’s life until he smelled $ of NFL.

Obviously he started with him at a young age. Teaching post offense.

99 percent of kids today don't want to learn post offense.

I don't think Frank probably did a whole lot different than what was done in his day.

He just taught his kid what he knew about basketball, which happen to be more than most parents, and started at an early age.

He doesn't have some magic formula for turning people into Luka.

Most college age kids could never become that because they didn't start when they were young.

I'm in! Push'em until they puke! ;) Although, it takes the right player, with the right mentality to be able to handle what needs to be done.

That said, I think Frank may be a player agent in the future. He has what it takes.

Let’s just stop all of this. Pretty soon he’ll be opening another Pete Newell big man camp. Just stop it. His kids a great hawk and great player who has worked really hard. Doesn’t mean you hire his dad.
That alone doesn’t, no.

His little brush with the law that landed him inprison is what he’s getting at.

He has lived and learned. Lots of stuff came out of the S&L crisis. I would say he has done quite well with what happened....and it will pale in comparison to what is coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and that is before this $3+ trillion free-for-all that is going to throw America in for a loop.

What I'm saying is probably 95% of all athletes that end up going pro are born that way. A few can polish their talent but you just don't take an average Joe off the street and turn him into a Pro athlete. Football would probably have the best chance to achieve this getting to the pros because of large linemen. JMO.. I, like thousands of dads spent hundreds of hours playing sports and coaching our kids and then very few even get a college scholarship let alone a pro contract.

I just finished Malcom Gladwell’s “Outliers”. While I have some disagreements with his models, I think you’re right. Standing nearly 7’ is a great start to play professional basketball.

That is as naive as it is stupid. Happy Easter, moron.

Not the first time.

Frank could be utilized some way. He has shown ability.

I'm still hedging my bets that he will be an agent. He has the skillset. Persuasive, determined, focused and extremely likeable.

That noted, Fran should hire him as a consultant this summer! I certainly would. The guy will drive players to be their absolute best. That's tough to do, in the way he and his brother can do it. But Frank will squeeze everything out of them.

This is something that Fran cannot do as a coach, at least during summer practices. But Frank Garza as a consultant could, if the players are willing and determined to succeed. The way that Luka and Joe W are. I'd love to see that happen!
