Fred Hoiberg

Nebraska has a recent history of "grass is always greener" coaching moves,.. In both basketball & football.

But I have been told by the experts on here that the grass is greener and that we need to fire KF and McCaffery and bring in new blood.

The experts are never wrong on here, btw.

;)

There’s no way you can keep him. He’s honestly been the worst coach the conference has seen in maybe forever, at least record wise. Pretty sure he’s 6-46 or something in his 3 years in the league with 5-6 more losses coming. Miles was fired for coming in 4th place a couple of times. He just doesn’t even seem engaged right now. And honestly his recruiting sucks.

Overall Records:

5 years: 115-56 (.673) at Clown U
3 years: 21-63 (.250) at Little Debbie

Conference Records:

5 years: 49-39 (.557) at Clown U
3 years: 6-47 (.113) at Little Debbie

Just found this article (link below). Hoiberg even got an extension and has a $18.5 million buyout. He is probably going to be there for a while.

I'd like to know the tab for former football, basketball and AD's at Nebraska paid in the last handful of years + future payments. I just know it's a freaking big number.

Hoiberg is a better, classier version of Alford. I'm not sure how well he can coach, but he's usually done a pretty good job of assembling talent. Maybe not so much lately.

I subscribe to the view that Hoiberg was an early adopter of the transfer strategy, but that everyone else caught up to him during the time period that he was in the NBA. When he came back, there was nothing unique about his approach to roster building, and he wasn't able to attract the high level transfers needed in order to compete in the B1G.

I think that he was overly aggressive in turning over the roster he inherited from Tim Miles, anticipating that his name recognition would allow him to get better transfers than he did. In particular, he has struggled to get the kind of big men and point guards that you need to compete.

At this point, entering year 4, I do not think that he will be able to turn the corner and compete at Nebraska. I am not sad about that fact. I do think that the $18.5 million buyout means that there will be a year 4 for Hoiberg in Nebraska. But I expect that will be the end of the road.

Didn’t they spend nearly $200M on a new on-campus arena not all that long ago?

I know Nebby is not a successful hoops program, but they should be at least shooting for NIT berths most seasons. There is some talent in KC (KU’s traditional recruiting grounds) and Omaha isn’t completely devoid of B1G caliber players. They won’t be perennial contenders like MSU or Purdue, but they can do a hell of a lot better than this.

Many of the guys he brought in to Ames were available for a reason, and it wasn’t because they weren’t talented enough. That was the real secret of his success

So Tim Miles gets fired after winning 6 B1G games in 2018-19, despite the team tying for fourth in 2017-18, and Fred has won 6 B1G games over three seasons combined. Maybe he stays to make hiring Frost look better.

The fact of the matter is they could still play. Nebraska would let him recruit the same guys, he’s just not getting them.

Correct. His effort so far at Nebraska is borderline stealing money. They play with so little passion it's quite remarkable. As others have said, everyone is in the transfer game now so it's similar to high school recruiting, in that the best transfers are going to the best schools just like the high school players.

But yes, Nebraska would have zero problems with him bringing in whomever as long as they could play.

That sounds like a number of fans on this board. Now I’m going to most likely hear “You might be okay with mediocrity but I’m not” or something along those lines…..but unless there’s a candidate on board who has a really strong resume…(like Fred) we better be careful.

Hell, Todd L had been National coach of the year!
You beat me to it Perryhawk. Before Fred was hired at Nebraska I heard fire Fran hire Fred numerous times on this board. Another one our expert posters fawned over on here was Bobby Hurley. He hasn’t exactly set the world on fire at ASU.

Evidently Neb has a transfer PG set to join next year's team along with some decent big men recruits.
The fan base is growing impatient so he better show significant improvement next year. Does not help that McDermott has sustained success just up the road at CU. Lot of husker fans wonder why PG Hepburn out of Omaha landed at Wis...good player.

Again, I don’t care who he’s got coming in. We’ve heard that for 3 years. Not only have they not improved, they have regressed. 4 wins next year would be marked improvement. Who can they possibly hope to pass besides possibly Minnesota, and at least Minny has big time high school basketball there. There’s no way they bring him back.

I think trev alberts will have a come to Jesus discussion with Fred like he had with frost.
Fred will return with a smaller buyout and a shortened leash.

I just realized Hoiberg is in his 3rd year, for some reason it seemed like he just got there. But, WOW, 7 wins in each year is not going to cut it.

I thought it was a HUGE mistake to get rid of Miles but I thought Hoiberg was a solid hire for them. What a HUGE mistake that turned out to be. At least Miles had them competitive in the Big Ten and pulled off a few upsets. Hoiberg has been a complete disaster and I'm loving it!
I'm fine with them getting rid of Miles, because f*** Tim Miles.

Also Hoiberg never should've left ISU, even for the Bulls.

Well, he's way behind schedule to make that happen.

Hes had 3 consecutive seasons that should only be acceptable in a year one total rebuild.

I don't see it happening. You have to start building momentum right away to be on the proper trajectory for a successful year 4 because you only have a short window where recruits are going to buy the new thing you're selling.

Now that they've seen the product no decent players will want to be a part of whats been on display there the last 3 seasons.

Hes dug himself a big hole.

Fred's not behind schedule,.. 4-6 years from now,.. this is Nebraska after all.

People say Fred hates recruiting, but Hoiberg brought in some good high school recruits while at Iowa State, including NBA players Georges Niang, Naz Mitrou-Long and Monte Morris. I think he had better assistants at ISU who could recruit. Doesn't look like that is happening in Lincoln
He had TJ O recruiting for him

Yikes. Even Lickliter didn't reach those lows, bad as he was. Lick's worst team won 10 games. Hoiberg hasn't had a team win more than 7 (so far). Let that sink in for a minute.

He’s done it a lot last 2 years with a lot of turn over. He needs to bring in those guys out of HS and mesh them with transfers like he did at isu. Got Morris, niang or Matt Thomas and mixed them in with very good transfers there for more than a year like Kane or burton etc.

looking at his roster doesn’t have too many underclassman producing much. Ironically the one who is will most likely be gone after this year or next. Obviously you don’t pass on 5* talent but long term kind of odd to say but they’d be better off if had someone else who’d be there for couple years to take his lumps and pay off down the road over McGowen this year knowing they’d be so bad. Or very least should’ve taken another freshman over a transfer.
How is that ironic?

Fred said he does not like recruiting....Fred is "people".

He said it in an interview when he took the Bulls job leaving ISU.

The point with all the transfers they don't have too much production from underclassman which doesn't bode well for long term if you are so bad now and not playing a lot of young guys. Except the one freshman who is putting up big #s won't be there to develop because he's most likely going pro.

Sadly, you are not wrong.

The stature of Nebraska athletics right now is flat out embarrassing.

The B1G made a monumental mistake inviting them to join.
I think little Debbie moving to the Big Ten really shows how the Texas Ten is not as awesome as people think it was regardless of sport.

At least they still have women’s volleyball and women’s bowling to puff out their chests over.
