FSU "Chief Osceola" is the #1 Most Offensive College Mascot! Notre Dame's Leprechaun is #4!

All the more reason I want FSU to keep on winning...so tired of this, "I'm offended about everything" culture.
I agree with you. Just pointing out that every point you have brought up about the Seminole name could also apply to the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, and they still lost their name.

Let me type slower for you.

The real Osceola was 3/4s white. So having a white person represent him is far more accurate than having a “100%” Native American.

Did that help with your comprehension, I typed it REALLY slowly this time.
You're trying to convince the wrong person.

I'm just trying to prepare you for the inevitable. It's natural to resist. But, it's coming. It's a shame, but it's coming.
Ok. Please provide the timeframe/range that you think this is going to happen. You think it's happening within the next 5 years or are you just saying some time could be 100+years from now?

Look, this is all very simple.

Herky is an Iowa student dressed up in costume who gets fans fired up at football games. He’s a mascot.

Cy is an Iowa State student dressed up in costume who gets fans fired up at football games. He’s a mascot.

Albert is a Florida student dressed up in costume who gets fans fired up at football games. He’s a mascot.

Osceola is a Florida State student dressed up in costume who gets fans fired up at football games. He’s a mascot.

I accept the argument that Osceola is a more dignified mascot than most mascots. I accept the argument that if the Seminole tribe has no quarrel with Osceola’s depiction then a white guy like me has no reason to object either.

But don’t try to tell me that he’s not a mascot. Because he is a mascot.

Okay, I'll concede and offer you this.

FSU's mascot pays tribute to the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The University of Florida's Albert and Alberta are dumb and pay tribute to the theme song from Jaws.

FSU's is badass.

SIAP my favorite might be the hawk from I believe St. Joe’s that flaps its wings throughout the entire game (basketball, at least).

Why dont we scrap herky and get a Red Tailed Hawk to have at the games? There are rescue birds who can no longer fly who would do well in the role.

But the problem with this is that he is represented by a single image. Was the chief never sitting around in jeans? Never cooking? Never playing volleyball? Never watching TV? Never reading?

If he cone out each home game portraying a different aspect of a real, complex human being, fine. But it is always the same, stereotyping image of a warring chief.

Because it's a sporting event. Competition. "War."

The man was a leader in a war. He led a resistance. That's what was really interesting about him.

Cultures everywhere around the world honor and revere their warriors. Insomuch as we do that, include natives too. Why not give them the same treatment?

Now you could ask the question of whether or not it's demeaning a person, effort, culture, when you include these warriors in something commercialized like a sporting event. But that's not specific to just the natives in the US.

And sure, there was much more to native culture in the period of Osceola than just warring. But again, context of a sporting event. It's not as if we're doing anything different with white historical figures in contexts like sporting events.

I'm sure Einstein ate hot dogs and wore jeans and loved his kids. But...

Sorta. But he's not a mascot then that does dumb shit on the sidelines all game. I guess the labeling doesn't matter one way or another to me.

Grab your shine box - we have a place for you. The national championship trophies need a nice buffing before the seasons.
We should have a separate wing for the B10 conquests. You guys can maybe earn a spot next to “THE” OSU who has NEVER beaten FSU in several tries starting in October of 1981...in the Horseshi, er Horseshoe. 😬

51-31 over Michigan at the "Big House." 2-0 vs. Michigan St. 3-0 against OSU, including knocking Shane Falco out of the Sugar Bowl...

Those People up there gave up too easily. My son’s FIL is a proud alum and he says the same thing.
Scandinavians are too nice.

Maybe we should start with the 2019 Sun Bowl Runner-Up Trophy first, just to make sure we have our technique down before we move on to the old, dusty trophies.

You're right, we should reciprocate....point us in the direction of your national championship trophies....

(and this is the part of the back-and-forth where you point to all those wrestling trophies....neat regional sport)

Not a strong point of argument.

Go ask Amazon if they treat their workers fairly. Do you accept that response?

I wasn't making an argument, simply provided how FSU communicates when asked about a "mascot". I have agreed that Osceola fits in the definition of mascot, not trying to argue that point either, it is really a question of semantics.
The people who value what Osecola represents for our school and the Tribe try and provide gravitas in hope that others will see the value we hold.
Of course, people who do not value the tradition or school and or maybe the Tribe itself will read that statement with derision and maybe compare it to a company releasing a memo about how employees are treated. Which is fine, people are going to feel how they choose to feel about the topic. I never try to change a person's opinion about Osceola, I share my opinion and discuss the value that the alumni and Tribe hold in Osceola's representation of FSU. My position is and has always been that I will let the Seminole Tribe of Florida guide me on this issue. If they change their position and become offended, or no longer want to participate then I would immediately change my opinion on the topic to honor the Tribe's wishes.

FWIW
Once you get off the floor into a supervisor or management role I hear Amazon treats you great, friend of mine got hired into the distribution center in Jacksonville and loves it

For the record, I hope they never give up. I wish all the teams that caved in were still fighting. But, there have been a lot more college than pro teams that caved. Stanford, Syracuse, Miami OH, and on and on.

White people deciding what is offensive yet again.

Sort of like that made up latinx label. No one Hispanic actually likes it and most don't even know what it means

It's kind of refreshing to see posters aligned who are ordinarily in opposite political tribes. All it took was an outside attack on their mascot to bring them together.
Amusing to see some of the righties have to deal with TJ and his histrionics.

It’s amusing to see you show up in this thread acting like you didn’t blatantly lie yesterday.

Did you ever think of a single example of me still blaming Bill Clinton for anything? Or are you ready to concede that you were just talking out your ass?

Allow me to TJ you for a moment. I said "Clinton", I didn't say "Bill Clinton" - how dare you put words in my mouth!!! I'm offended. I'm outraged! You knew I was talking about Hillary and you intentionally mischaracterized my statements in order to smear me. I can't believe you have the gall to continue posting!!!!!!1111!!!

I'm not getting into the debate, and a page and a half of reading was enough for me, but there are two points I want to make:
  1. Even back in the late 1990s, I was a little uncomfortable that the student who portrayed Osceola was a white frat guy (as was I) made up in redface and warpaint.
  2. Has anyone mentioned that this "survey" is a blog post from some unknown promo products company in Illinois?

They're concern trolling. If the Seminole Tribe of Florida asks us to change the team name, we'll change it.

I gotta say, this is ingenious:

"Florida State does not have a mascot. Instead, we have the honor of calling ourselves “Seminoles” in admiration of the only Native American tribe never conquered by the U.S. Government."

That is some incredible American word subterfuge! I love it! It reminds me of US Government euphemisms to conceal its crimes. "We didn't murder anyone. We simply neutralized them! And, we never lied to anyone. We merely engaged in disinformation."

Lol at Belem desperately trying to dig out of his hole.

Let’s try this - give me an example of me blaming anything that’s happening now on anyone named Clinton. It could be their first, middle, or last name. Or even a nickname. Bill. Hillary. Chelsea. George. Clinton Portis.

I’ll even accept variations of the name Clinton. Delbert McClinton. Clint Eastwood. Or even a name that rhymes with Clinton, like Wynton Marsalis.

I’ll accept anyone who lives or has lived in any city, town, village, county, or parish named Clinton. Clinton, Iowa. Clinton, Illinois. Clinton, Australia, just to name a few.

I’ll accept anyone who has ever owned, driven, or been a passenger in a Clinton automobile. Or any US Naval personnel who served on the USS Clinton in World War II. Or literally anyone even tangentially related to the bame or word ‘Clinton’.

I don’t even ask for a link, just an example off the top of your head. Just give me something - anything - that shows you’re not a worthless goddamn liar.
