Future is bright

It's possible and I'll admit that I created that thread to draw him out. Whoever is doing it though is pretty good at impersonation. I will say it is much more fun having Kilroy of any sort back on the board. Now if we could just get Matt Foley to come back also, and tell us how superior he is at talking football.

Fun to be had everywhere these days.
Nice job patting yourself on the back, Hawktimus. But I give you credit for bringing back the ghost of Kilroy even if it was for only one day.

Btw, weren't you exposed as double posting on HROT several months ago? I don't remember the details but I remember Swag was involved in some way.

Regardless of the impersonation attempt ... speculating on the future is always a fun, albeit useless, endeavor. My impression is that the future may, in fact, prove to be quite bright ... but there are "conditions" ....

1. The "culture change" that started in 2015 needs to continue to take hold. This isn't a given because the 2016 class really isn't that big. There are going to be A LOT of contributing JRs in 2016, so we're going to need a lot of those juniors to help the seniors to carry the leadership burden.

2. We're going to have to hope that the transition that we'll invariably face at WR will be able to be compensated by Beathard's continued improvement and his excellent leadership. While we return VandeBerg and McCarron ... two guys who I expect consistency from ... we're going to have several talented sophomore WRs who will be expected to step up. The problem with young guys is that they often have issues with consistency. Hopefully Jerminic continues to make strides AND hopefully somebody else emerges (perhaps from Parker, Scheel, or Falconer).

3. Tight-end and fullback have been significant strengths in 2015. We're going to need new names to emerge at those positions. We know that we have a very talented TE in Kittle ... however, Krieger-Coble has had a fabulous senior campaign. Outsey seemed promising early in the season ... and Wisnieski is also a guy who will squarely be in the picture. Hopefully those guys elevate their respective games - it will be important to have BOTH of them contributing at a high level. I don't know what to expect from the fullback position - it seems like Kullick might be pretty good. We'll have to see ... because Plewa and Cox have been terrific!

4. The front seven returns A LOT of experience ... but they're going to have to take their game to the next level. This is because the secondary will likely face a bit of a transition in 2016 ... and they're going to need to be afforded a little bit more "wiggle room." The good news is that Hesse and Matt Nelson will have another year under their belts working with Doyle ... that will continue to help pay dividends. However, now that they've gotten so many high quality reps ... we're going to need them to be able to get a bit more pressure on the QB.

I'm pretty confident that should the aforementioned areas get properly addressed ... next season could prove to be a really interesting one too!

I heard this story before in 1996, 2004, and 2009 - subsequently 1997, 2005, and 2010 were my most disappointing seasons as a Hawkeye fan. I am just going to enjoy this one and have no expectations for next year.

I think that the Hawks are losing too many critical guys after '15 for the '16 O to be a "guaranteed thing."

The good news is that the front 7 on the D really should be better ... largely because they return so many high-quality starters. My expectation is that if the secondary can shoulder the burden of the anticipated departures ... the D should continue to be excellent.

I am one that deserves a serving of crow as I predicted a 6-6 record and would have been fine if KF had resigned or been released. Glad to tobe wrong. Ironically what did the people that wanted a change complain about? CJ should be QB, Weisman is a great kid but a fullback not a tailback, need to take more chances and not sit in 4-3 defense the entire game without blitzing. The only thing that still worries me is the defense the last couple of games and playing all three linebackers at the end of games when we know they have to pass.

And Kilroy as much as I missed your posts, in about a week I will be ready for you to go away again.

Every year before the start of the season I tell my dad Iowa is going to be undefeated and go to the rose bowl. My dad laughs and says yeah right! We are all laughing now! Woohoo Go Hawks!

With CJ ferentz is a good coach. Without CJ it hasn't been pretty for a long time.
Nah, QB play is one of the differences with respect to number of victories. Another significant one is team chemistry and team leadership ... the current group has "it." Ferentz has never forgotten how to be a "good coach." If you watch how the Hawks play ... the team is more than any one player.

The hawkeyes are proving all the whiners wrong and doing it in a hurry. WE have had a great season and can't no one say diferent. So much for the fire ferentz nancies. Beathard is doing a pretty good job I will admit. I'm not too happy we dont have proper insurance behind him, but he has stayed healthy so far. I'm betting that some of you guys, you know who you are, are a bit testy because the ol ball coach is here to stay!!!

A look at next year.

qb- C.J. Beathard, 6ft 2 in, 220lb, Sr.
rb- Daniels 6ft, 225lb Sr. along with Wadley 5ft 8in, 190lb, Jr., Mitchell 6ft 210lb Jr.
Wr-J. Smith, 6ft 2in, 185lbs, SO
WR-M. Vandenberg, 6 ft 2in, 195lbs, Jr.
TE-G. Kittle, 6ft 4 in, 235 lbs, Sr
OT-Myers, 6ft 5in, 300lbs, JR, Croston 6ft 5in, 295 JR
OG-Welsh, 6ft 3in, 288 JR, Feretnz, 6ft 2 inch 278 JR
C-Simmons, 6ft 2 in, 295 SR

That's a hell of a good lineup right there. despite the naysayers the ol' ball coach has turned the ship around and here is your foundation. Don't forget the new qb's Cook and Boyle, both of them mobile and talented.

On defense this is what we have. coming back

DE, Hesse 6ft 3in 240 RS SO, once he get some more doyle treatment look out
DE, Nelson 6ft 8 in 2709 RS SO, this guy has the frame to cause troubles against opponents, future is bright
DT, Johnson, 6ft 4in, 310lbs SR, love jaleel here, good old fashioned smash mouth player, so much for davis and LTP leaving being a weakness. Developmental program remember?
DT, Bazata 6ft 2in, 284 JR, another underated player for the hawks

Heres where it gets real good

LB J. Jewell, 6ft 2in, 236 SO, this guys is playing on sundays someday
LB Ben Niemann, 6ft 3in, 225lbs, JR, another jewell from a school that can't recruit
LB Bower, 6ft 1in, 228 JR, and dont' forget Hockaday, 6ft 1in, 215lbs, SO, go look at his high school highlight reel, this one will be special for sure

on the secondary we have this

CB-Mabin, 6ft 2in, 200lb JR, a protoypical defensive back who's still learning and will be better next year
CB King, 5ft 11in, 200lb SR, the best of the KF era IMO, and hopefully he comes back to us
SS Taylor, 6ft, 195lbs, JR, he's been underrated this year, heckuva good player we have in him
SS Gair or Snyder, both about the same size 6ft1-2, 210lbs, typical blue collar KF players, one of which will takeover from Lomax, another NFL prospect from iowa

What we have here is a bright future for this team, lots of you guys said this woudl never happen with kf, and surprise surprise, you were DEAD wrong. we can be B1G champs and even more, once we take down the Nub-braska.

How much crow did people on here eat before they couldnt stomach anymore?
So you sort of "knew" Iowa would have a season like this and Kirk would lead us to 11-0? Fans questioning the state of the program did so because of the body of the work the past few seasons. Thanks for another "I told you so" post.

This team has great chemistry and leadership and it starts with CJ. Without CJ we would have a few losses in my opinion.

I think that most Iowa fans, myself included, would agree that without CJ we would have had a few losses. However, that said, he's not the only source of leadership on the team. To his credit, the whole team has definitely rallied to him. Furthermore, the very fact that he's played injured and showed such grit .... I think that has inspired a lot of guys too.

That's not kilroy. Too many correct punctuations and spelling. Just too much structure.

Also, he has no life so he would still be here calling out every single slight and ranting on and on.

Good imitation though.

I seriously think the guy probably died. No way he has enough self control not to be on here. Certainly not with the kind of season iowa has had

I do not suppose you looked the schedule for next year?

All we need are star rankings....
I wonder where this class was ranked in the nation and Big 10. I assume it was ranked first in the conference and top 5 in the country? Has to be because we know low ranked classes mean you did not get the kind of athletes you needed to compete.

Got a really solid squad coming back next year.

I think we might see Bower add weight and go DE but that is a guess. We are stacked at LB with Hockaday and Mends to go along with Jewell and Neimann.

James Daniels going to go to Center next year from what I hear.

Please no. There are some crazy ideas, and then there are some that just don't make any sense. This is one that doesn't make any sense (IMO).

Looks pretty good to me. Away at Wisconsin may not be as bad as folks think in 2 years...same with MSU depending on if Dantonio chooses greener pastures...we get the buckeyes at home...minnesota at home...no Michigan...I don't think this that bad at all.

I don't think that is very far fetched. He is a large LB as it stands and has played DE in the raider package this year. If you go back and look at KF's tenure the writing is on the wall. Roth, Kampman, ect...all fit that large LB mold

I have entertained this thought before and have concluded the following:
  1. If Bower doesn't have the foot speed to be a legitimate contender for a starting LB spot, then it makes more sense to see if he might develop into a DE. The big question here is how fast is Bower? I don't know.
  2. To muddy the above point even more ... even if Bower is a step slow, that may simply imply that he wouldn't be a preferred candidate for the LB spots that operate more in space. He could still prove to be able to be a contributor at LEO against run-heavy teams OR a contributor at MIKE. Either way, this would have him pegged more as a back-up LB - akin to the role played by Perry. Bower already has valuable experience as a former starting LB - thus, he definitely understands the responsibilities of LBs in our D.
  3. Between the guys already on campus and the new LBs entering the program from the '16 class, will there be any guys who are too good to keep off the field? For example, last year as freshmen, Niemann and Jewell were too good to keep off the field. Thus, even if a guy isn't necessarily a starter, they might earn a significant spot on special teams AND lock down a back-up LB spot. The big question here is whether there will be any emerging LBs out of Garbutt, Jinning, Wilson, Taylor, Nick Niemann, or the several other really talented walk-on LBs who are on the squad.
Thus, if Bower can be a legit competitor for the LB spot vacated by Fisher, then he obviously won't make the move. Bower's experience at LB will still be viewed as a valuable asset for the D, particularly at LB. Thus, there is going to be the very real trade-off between the benefits of adding him as a contributor at DE and the negative blow to our depth at LB should he make such a move.
