Bleak Future

For those of us that live out of state, its getting kinda demoralizing when you show up to work after a game and coworkers that are college football fans are like, "Sorry about Iowa." or "What happened to Iowa?". They don't rib you anymore, now they seem genuinely sorry for you. That happened to me again today. I'm sure I am not alone.
Exactly this 👆🏼

First time in my 40+ years as a hawkeye where I felt this much dread about the future of our program. Kirk is not going to be able sustain mediocrity. We are screwed and things are going to start to unravel. Got a sick feeling in my gut I can't shake.
I am hoping Lauck is ready to step in next year. Really think if we get three starters from Power 4 schools in key positions, we will be ok. Not great, but competitive.

Competitive with whom? The likes of Nebraska and Northwestern?? Yeah, probably. We had the most experienced OL on the planet in '24 and we shit the bed.

Next season we will be right back to the old "They're inexperienced" excuses - The Iowa Circle of Life.

"They'll be much improved next year." It never ends.

OP, I feel ya. I hope not, but feel we could have our own Japan’s Lost Decade. It’s happened to more storied programs (eg., Michigan), so it could definitely happen to us. Kirk, historically (as evidenced by the discussion of Gallery et al in this thread) and currently, is brilliant with retention for the most part, but recruitment hurts big time.

Unfortunately, that will be the accelerator in our current trajectory. And while everyone worries about the fOSUs of the world, they are missing that competition is getting stiff for key talent, otherwise we wouldn’t be lamenting the current acquisition situation. Man, I hope I’m wrong, and it can be fixed, but it is a Herculean task. It’s going to take the entire leadership of the organization to make it happen.

our offensive line was vastly improved this year, but was brutal for the last three. The term “experience” is vastly overrated, IMO. Like I said, we need 3-4 transfers that were starters at a power 4 and at key positions to compete next year.

After 3 or 4 years we still don't trust our OL to get us 1 yard at crunch time and Barnett is in no danger of being relieved of his duties? Pretty much sums up the state of Iowa FB.
Fvck Iowa football and basketball (men's). All hawk fans should be embarrassed of them, and if they're not, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Both programs are dead by the hands of their biblically-long-tenured coaches.

Not sure I understand this. What “key players “ were part of KF’s first “”run?” I remember Aaron Kampman, Khalil Hill, Kyle McCann and Ladell Betts as seniors on that ‘01 team. Maybe there were a few more. But I think people consider’ 02-04 to be KF’s first run, and I’m pretty sure all Hayden recruits were gone by then.
Fall of 02...most. Fall 01, no. Read the article

That feeling in your gut probably comes from knowing you don't have a clue.

Kirk will be at Iowa through '29, so the immediate future looks strong.

And as long as he's replaced by an "Iowa guy", things will probably still be pretty good after Kirk is gone

In watching about 12 games this postseason, I can definitely say Iowa playing the game is unlike any other team trying to do so.

It appears Kirk is trying to maintain ball control and little to no scoring while Lester actually gave him points to work with. Everyone was laughing at his decisions the second half.

At any rate, they’ll win 7 games next year is my prediction.

I wouldn’t bet on it.

You’re bad at sports betting, but you’re terrible at humor.
I'd bet on it. DM me.

Remember last year, when I told you Brian would be gone and Kirk would be back and you just couldn't wrap your head around how that could be possible? Pretty sure if I offered a wager on that packaged outcome to anyone who would have been interested. Knowing me, I did.

So you think I'm bad at sports betting because I lost one bet, that was expected to lose, but only needed to have an expectancy of winning greater than 31.25% of the time to be a good bet? That's about the sample size people on this board make their conclusions upon, so you fit right in.

Just because a guy wins a hand of blackjack doesn't mean it was a good bet. The odds of outcome vs odds of payout were not in his favor. I'm seriously blown away that you guys don't understand that. I knew you guys were dumb when it comes to football, but good Lord

Outside of Cade, have we gotten any portal transfers from major programs ? Seems like we’ve landed Mac players which is same with our normal recruiting playbook.

You’d think a destination like a Big10 school with some history of success would be appealing

So what is keeping these players from signing ? I think the clearest answer is the PSU backup. He went to Missouri over Iowa cause of the scheme and culture

Until Kirk is gone, we will continue to get players who take 3 years to develop, if at all

Take a Zofran.

I think we bounce back and make the playoffs next year.

It’s never made sense to me why OL or defensive players don’t come to Iowa. Say what you will about KF, but he is highly respected in the college game and by the NFL. Phil Parker has a highly respected and nationally ranked defense every year and sends people to the league. I don’t get it. I understand why offensive skill players don’t come, but outside of that, I would think people would strongly look at Iowa.🤷‍♂️

Nick Jackson LB from UVa was pretty good. But I concur w/ your sentiment. Iowa isn't getting any starters from any P2-4 program when they know KFs loyal inclinations to stick w/ guys he recruited unless they get off script or fall from grace.

Thanks for the drop in Mary
You by far are the biggest KF a$$ kisser I have ever seen.
It borders on insane how much you stand up for him.
What's it gonna take before you figure out the game has passed him by? 0-12? That do it?

I believe is has more to do with geography than the university or football program.

I keep picturing the “Back to the Future” movie poster, but instead saying “Bleak Future” and instead of Marty looking at his watch with the panicked face, it’s KF looking at his notepad with that clueless look he always has on game day.

Maybe someone with skills in that area can come up with it?

Do you mean better writing skills?

No. That’s not your opinion. It’s a fact we can’t compete with top 25 teams anymore, or at least the last three years.

Watching Penn State the announcers mentioned how they were recruiting defensive linemen who were faster.
That shows a difference between the top teams and Iowa. They get players who meet specific criteria for what they're trying to accomplish.
Iowa is just happy to get any player

I would add the Michigan - 'Bama game. UM was trying to play keep away, but in their defense, they turned their season around and were pretty salty on defense at the end of the year.

Hmm....well, he had cancer. And his "decline" was essentially one bad season and one very unlucky 1997 season riddled with tons of injuries. Iowa was very tough in 1995 and 1996. You feel revisionist to me.
Don't throw Hayden in the lot with Ferentz. Hayden knew when to hang it up after giving us 20 years of exciting football where we were competitive with all the teams we played. Kirk has let the game slip by him and has been playing incomplete football for a few years now. He's old, he has the record, and he has more money than Midas. This football program isn't his sole property until he wants to hang it up and I suspect we're in for a rough ride.

I wonder how much nil money was lost after fans watched that mess yesterday?
It really is bizarre. It was EASILY our best performance against a top 20 team (Sec!) in years. We scored more points than against the previous 9 ranked teams we played....combined! (Is this really true?!?)

But I have the same doomer vibes due to that same shtty chicken little game-day coaching that basically cost us the Isu and Ucla games as well.

Maybe they don't want to play for their grandfather, who's football mind is stuck in the 50's.

I don’t think this is accurate. Iowa has a specific type of player they want.

For DL, they want guys who keep contain. It got even more obvious when Phil took over.

People like AJ, VanNess….they didn’t start despite being the most talented….cause they didn’t follow the script. So they were used more as 3rd down or passing downs….and they still had solid Iowa careers

Both ND and PSU….look what they’ve gone after and how it’s paid off. Their DL are equipped to deal with the modern game

I still think Phils scheme can work against the better teams but the offense absolutely has to keep up

Let’s be honest, if they could get the top tier recruits out of high school, they would. Recruiting to scheme is mostly a cover up for “not coming to Iowa anyway.”

Until Kirk figures out that a high level offense is needed, it will continue to be a challenge against good teams.

The winning team has scored the following in the games so far in the CFP

38, 42, 38, 27, 31, 39

Ohio State is currently at 34

That is against other good teams.

don't bet the farm on playoffs
Closer to 2-10 than playoffs … glad KF decided to hang around for next few brutal years
That way when next guy(s) won’t be blamed for next ugly decade
This program cannot compete in new world of college football
