How far does it reach? I think there are 76 teams in div 1 and out of those I believe there are 16 coaches (head and assistants) around the country. Who am I missing?
Iowa - Brands, Brands, Morningstar
Illinois - Jim Heffernan, Mark Perry
Minnesota - JRob
V. Tech - Dresser, Mike Zadick
Oregon St - Jim Zalesky, Troy Steiner
UNI - Doug Schwab
Indiana - Duane Goldman
Purdue - Tony Ersland (new)
Wisconsin - Barry Davis
Fresno St. - Terry Steiner (new)
UC Davis - Lennie Zalesky
UNC- Tony Ramos (not sure if I would put him as a member of the Gable coaching tree. Not because of what has happened, but did Gable have that much to do with Tony?)

Could be wrong but I thought cliff Moore was an assistant with edinboro

Troy Steiner is the head coach at Fresno State and Terry is the national team women's coach at USA Wrestring.

Tom Ryan is at Ohio State.

Joel Sharrat is head coach at the Naval Acadamy.

Don't think Lenny Z is at Cal Davis.

If you are looking at assistants, there are a lot.

Mike Hatcher was at Grand Canyon until they dropped.

Joe Johnston at Missouri

Dziewa at Penn, St. John at VT

Can't really put Ramos or star in the tree.
Those really come off brands tree.

Not sure you understand the concept of a coaching tree

No. You can be sure. I do.
Gable coaching tree or Iowa coaching tree.

Typically you don't include the branches off a protege. You can but not typical.

Here a word for you spooner. Nuance.

Of course you do. That's the whole point of a coaching tree; all the branches. It is a takeoff of a family tree.

Morning* was a redshirt freshman when Gable was an assistant under Brands. Didn't he beat Reader (sorry if spelling is wrong) at Carver when Reader was ranked # 2 for ISU? If correct I think that it was the match in which Gable and Sanderson were jawing when Gable flipped him the bird.

I never added it up before, but it looks like half of the B1G wrestling coaches are former Iowa wrestlers. Pretty impressive! PSU doesn't currently have any as HC in the B1G. Hopefully that stat will change a bit in the future. Some PSU fans would like to see all our former wrestlers stay at PSU. But I think it's a testimony to the strength of a program when you can influence other schools as well! Iowa has had a good track record at that!

MSU, Mark Schwab didn't wrestle under Gable unless he did as part of the HWC. And hasn't coached at Iowa either. Mark startled at UNI.

Now another branch of that coaching tree could be Non-Iowa wrestles that were part of the HWC. That would be a pretty long list as well.

So, would you put all of those that wrestled under J on the tree too?
I have to agree with whoever thinks Ramos doesn't belong on Gable's tree. Otherwise we would say that Gable came from Adam's ( Garden of Eden variety) tree. Ramos is from Brand's tree in my opinion.

What about HS coaches of Gable era? Or is that a diff thread ?

All nonsense aside...
Gables tree has many HS coaches as well as many NCAA refs back in the day. He inspired so many to stay with the sport. College coaching is not limited to D1 either. I think all levels have someone.

I'm not an expert on coaching trees, especially wrestling coaching trees, and I realize this isn't apples to apples.

But the vast majority of football/basketball ones I have seen only include their coaching staff (assistants, GAs, coordinators, etc). Not players (they're teaching them to compete, not coach) and not others in which they had no direct contact.

Gable is still involved in the program, has contact with wrestlers etc. If you think Gable didnt provide mentor-ship/coaching to current athletes you're nuts.

I know that I post this ad nauseam, but I contend that Gable is the largest branch of the Dave McCuskey coaching tree. McCuskey begat Siddens who begat Gable. Other McCuskey branches are Bill Koll, Bill Nelson, Gerry Leeman, Keith Young and Gary Kudelmeier (among others).

A coaching tree, unlike a family tree, shows where the direct head coaches wrestlers land. Not assistant or other.
Gables tree is the wrestlers under his direct watch and where they are. This is true for any organizational "tree".
Hope this clears things up. Of course you can do what you want but this is how it is typically discussed.

So Nick Saban, Fat Charlie, Bill O'Brien, Josh McDaniels, etc. weren't from the Bill Belichick coaching tree until they got head coaching jobs? Or to take it further, weren't from his tree at all because they never played for him?

Ok. Yea. Guys from the head coach go out and do things, yea his tree.
Good lord. This is stupid and I fell for it.
You want to know who gable coached and went on to do things in wrestling. Great. You want to add guys that wrestled for a guy who gable coached who went on. Come on man.

He didn't say that. If you have a job, I'm sure your coworkers love the portion of your personality where you have to nitpick everything. Or are you just this way online?

This is one hell of a wrestling forum. Maybe i should be on Dan's Tree because of the times I've talked to him in different airports. You are a nitpicker spooner. I'd put you in the same category with 21guns and evflores who are without a doubt complete morons.

This is the cruelest thing anyone has ever said about me. If and when I get my ass beat by the Souci kids, I won't feel lower than I do right now.
