on another site. He was discussing players in the Capitol Classic game and who ND recruited but didn't sign. Very encouraging stuff.

"Other players of interest to Irish fans were Chris Lykes, a Gonzaga High 5-8 point guard. We wanted him but he committed to Miami. He is lightening quick and can shot very well. HE was Washington Post Player of the Year. Had a poor Classic however. His shot was very cold. We also recruited Luke Garza a 6-11 center from Maret in DC. I heard fans say they did not like him because they saw him as a slow white center who could not jump. He committed to Iowa. This kid can play. He was the local MVP. Hustled, rebounded and scored. While he is not leaper, he positions himself well. Can shoot inside and from 3. I spoke to his high school coach, Chuck Dreisell, after the game. Chuck is lefty's son. He raved about Garza. I asked what happened with ND. HE said ND came in on him late. He was about to make a trip to South Bend, but changed his mind committing to Iowa before the trip. What I liked most about Garza is that he played defense and hustled. You don't see that in an All Star game. Maret is not in the DC Catholic league but plays pretty good ball. In fact they played Gonzaga, the City champ and he scored 37."

I'm guessing Garza will be a solid player but never a star. Just a guess. If he turns out to be a star, great, but I wouldn't count on it.

With that said, I do think he'll be a better offensive player than Adam Woodbury. And if he rebounds and defends as well as Adam, Iowa has gotten a good player.

I don't know that he'll be a "great defender", but I think he'll be a space eater in the lane, and a presence on the boards. I do think he's a smart player and he'll play well within the team defense framework.

I don't know, either. None of us do. I'm just basing that off of the numerous quotes I've read from people who have watched him in high school say he's a solid defender. In honesty, "space eater" and a "presence on the boards" fits what Adam Woodbury was at Iowa to a T.

I appear to be the exception but I am also excited about Connor Mc.

For sure Jedn, I'm excited about Connor also, I'm just not sure what hes going to do yet. If some MLB team waves millions of dollars in his face, it would be hard to turn down.

Warrior, equalizer, draw fouls, shoots free throws +80%. Basketball background in family. Smart, Columbia (Ivy League) offered.

I spent a lot of time researching him last summer. In AAU when he came up against nations top high school talent, it was always a WAR and he came out on top more often than not. He's mature and he's serious...we're gonna love this kid.

Might as well spend some more time on the board tonight. I am not quite sure what to make of Connor. He feels a little like he is in between positions. I am not sure if he is a 1 or a 2. I don't see him adding an element of driving the ball to the hoop.

But you know that he is going to be a smart player. You know that he is going to share the ball. As a 6'6" lefty, he is going to have the height and passing angle to make good entry passes into the paint.

And I think that he has turned into a sound shooter. I don't think that he is a natural shooter like Bohannon (few are), but he has a solid stroke.

Top 100 rankings are not given out based upon your last name.

I expect him to contribute, but not to star. I expect that we will be better organized offensively and defensively when he is on the court.

I could be wrong. It just feels to me that he is more mature as a player, and thus closer to his ceiling. But I think that his floor is also pretty high, and that he will be a solid contributor.

I think Connor surprises like JBO did last year. Maybe not in exactly the same way, but Hawk fans are going to be very happy he's walked on.

Woody could move his feet too, that was a big part of why he was good on defense.

Iowa's had 3 off the top of my head in the last 20 years.

Luke Recker, and Sam Okey.

Uthoff for 1 year, not sure if he was top 150 or not?

Were all three required to be walkons because they were not released from scholarship from the previous schools? Sam Okey is a bit before my time but I do remember hearing he was a McDonalds all american who transferred from Wisconsin

Being they were all considered BigTen transfers, there was previously a rule to stop in-conf. xfr so you had choice of walking on, or sitting out 2 years of competition.

Recker's was unusual as he sat a year when xfr to Arizona and during time had the tragic car accident, so they ruled that since he never played for Arizona that year he sat out counted but the Big Ten considered it in-conf. xfr so he had to pay his way. Thankfully his dad lived in Iowa at the time so he got in-state tuition.

Okey should have never played for Wisconsin. Coach he committed to was let go and then they went from an up tempo team to the Bennett snails pace and it was not his game. Iowa and North Carolina where other options out of High School that he really liked. Too bad he should have gotten a release and played for a team that fit his style.

Brad Sellers rule (My memory may be off, welcome correction if it is.)

Sellers transferred from Wisconsin to Ohio State and right after the league made a rule, no scholarship for one year if transfer is Big Ten to Big Ten.

Sam would not have thrived in an up tempo offense. He was never in condition to get up and down the court like that. Too many cigarettes. I think the only reason he transferred to Iowa is that Dr. Tom assured him he would not have to partake in any of the team conditioning. A great talent with a poor work ethic.

I remember him being an absolute beast his freshman year at Wisconsin. One of the most athletic white guys ive ever seen.

By the time he got to Iowa he was allot thicker. Think he only played a handful of games at Iowa.

Would have been amazing to see him and Settles play a couple healthy years together.

Did a little reading, I remembered his freshman year being terrific but I didn't realize he led Wisconsin in points, rebounds, blocks and assists. Thats insane.

Even in the poor physical condition he kept himself in he could have really helped the team had he not been injured. Broken wrist? He really had a ton of talent.

Guy could put down a one handed, left handed jam like no other !

god knows we've been inside of an inside presence almost since Fran took the job. Garza fits that bill.

Garza reinforces our inside presence with Cook, Pemsl, more experienced Kriener, to the point where we could be an inside-out team (actually stronger in the paint than the perimeter) offensively for the first time in Fran's tenure.

A MLB team is not going to wave millions of dollars in his face.
