Garza vs Iowa St

The nice thing about Garza is he isn't Reggie Evans when it comes to passing out of the block. If he has has an advantage he takes it...if not he can hit open guys.

If Fran remains calm like he has this season, this team will keep their composure and it will be a ball game. If the coach lets the crowd get to him (which they will try to do) then this game will be a double digit loss.

I fully expect a great game.

Garza is somewhat of a black hole in the post. If the ball goes into him, it's not coming back out very often. His usage rate is 33.3%.

And that's not a terrible thing considering his efficiency down there.

I seriously doubt that Clown fans are even concerned about Garza. The basketball savants at CyFan universally mocked Iowa for signing him and predicted what a bust he would be.

Yep and now clown fans on cryclown fanatic are sure the only reason Garza scores as he does is because he travels or hooks the opponent. If the refs would simply call it he would not have done much at all this year.

Then on the other hand they claim they don’t obsess about the Hawks but how would they be so sure of all of this if they weren’t watching every game we have played?

I know asking the obvious simply isn’t playing fair with clown fans.

Yep, according to clowns he travels every time he touches the ball. Every single time. And every single (different) ref misses every one of them. But! You’re not fooling clown fans! They see them! You bet your asss they do.

Garza is no MJ or Chrysler LeBron, but he’s one of the hardest working and persistent players I’ve ever seen. He just never quits or gives up. Say what you want clowns, disrespect him, count him out, he may put 50on you before he’s done.

From what I saw the other night ISU players drive the ball down the lane hard. If we take a few charges will help us out tremendously. Garza & Company will be ready no doubt in my mind. Go Hawks!

I think we’ve learned a bit in our last couple games. Our recipe is simple. We keep the floor spread with space for Garza to work. He will score more times than not. If they double, we kick to our shooters, our very good shooters. We don’t have great driving scorers, but what we do have is a very skilled center and great shooters, yes great. Jbo, cjf, and joe w are all great shooters. Let Garza take it when it’s there, kick when not and live with our shooters.

If ISU is hitting outside shots, ISU probably will win. If not, it will be a barn-burner and Iowa may well break its 17-year drought in Hilton.

I can't remember if I mocked Iowa or not but if I did I will eat my crow. Garza is a stud this season.

Totally agree. He is super efficient. He's shooting 55% from the field on 16 FGA's per game. What I'd like to see ISU do is have Haliburton sag off of Connor and quickly double Garza when he touches it. He averages less than an assist a game. I would like to see ISU try to steal the ball from him right away and force him to pass the ball. Can't leave Weiskamp and CJF.

I don't want to see ISU lose the game having Garza get ISU's bigs in foul trouble and hitting a bunch of shots over shorter or thinner defenders. If Connor hits 8 3s and ISU loses I can deal with that.

Probably not a popular opinion but relying on your big man to carry your team is a losing formula in today’s college basketball landscape. Iowa absolutely must shoot the 3 ball at a higher frequency if they want a shot at the tourney this year.

Joey and CJ must shoot 5 3s a game.....JoBo if he plays needs to shoot 5

Don’t just act like it’s Garza or Connor shooting threes. Jbo, cjf, and joe w are tremendous shooters. All three of them. We have both an inside game and an outside game.

I think in reality even the most Hawk-hating clone fan will admit Garza is incredibly effective on offense. His moves around the basket and ability to get his shot off are elite and annoying as hell. He looks like he shouldn’t be able to get those shots off but he does continually and he can shoot the three. His defense not so much. If he and Joe W are both on and the clones shoot the 3 like they have been (poorly) it will be a tough night in Hilton. If we can shoot I think we win a close one. Should be a good game. You can still dislike the Hawks and appreciate talent.

It doesn’t always look pretty but it’s hard to deny the results. Tell me the last time the clowns have had the only power five player in the country averaging 20 and 10.

Been a while I’m since a clone scored 40+ against a quality team on the road, but I was in Hilton in 1987 when Lafester scored 54 to beat Iowa 102 to 100. Now that was a crazy game. But anyway you will get no argument from me that Garza is an elite college big man

Garza is having a tremendous season. There is no denying that.
ISU has the only power 5 player in the country averaging 16 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds. There are some quality players in the state.

Yeah, was going to say. He doesn't like passing much.

I think that drop to CJ last night might be the first pass to a cutter I've seen him make ever.

Garza is playing great. He works his tail off, knows his game and rarely strays from what works. Offensively, he runs straight to the block and uses his very good to exceptional footwork to his advantage. I don't think he travels all that often, but uses and gets away with a hook quite a bit. If ISU can run, perhaps he can get tired out. However, if I were game planning, I think I'd take the page from Michigan's playbook and let Garza get his. I'd focus on ball pressure and tight three point defense as Michigan proved that Garza running wild doesn't necessarily result in an Iowa win.

People overreact with the hook/chicken wing. It looks like it has more of an effect than it really does. It’s one of those calls that refs and the crowd love to spot but it’s really often just a normal position for your arm when you make the types of moves they call it on. It does t really give the advantage that it appears to.

Then why do they call it at all?

I agree I don’t really see him travel much, he may hook his guy occasionally but usually it’s not blatant and just looks like part of the flow of his game. I see very few I’d really call as a hook.

What makes Garza special offensively isn't his foot work, which is fine but nothing special, it's his hands and his timing.

Anywhere near the basket he can release the ball from just about any angle or position, with either hand back board or no back board with perfect touch for whatever the shot requires.

And since he has a knack to know how to knock the defender off balance and put the shot up before they can collect themselves he can get a shot just about every time down court if not double.

So will Jacobsen take swings again and Prohm grab Iowa players like last year?

Or will isu students threaten violence against the Iowa team bus like they do for KU?

Will Pemsl get attacked by a college student so weak looking my 1 year old son could take him again? Or will he just shove players as they are walking away again?

Those were my predicted matchups when Iowa has the ball.
Curious to what you thought the rest of the defensive matchups Iowa would bring against ISU? For the ISU side I'm thinking Nixon vs CJ, Haliburton vs Joe W, Bolton vs J-BO, Jacobson vs C-Mac, and Solo vs Garza.

When Iowa has the ball if ISU plays man:

Young on Garza
Jacobson on Connor
Haliburton on Wieskamp
Bolton on Bohannon
Nixon on Fredrick

Kinda what I thought as well both ways. How much man do you think Iowa actually plays compared to Zone. I'm guessing they play Zone 85-90% of the time.

I dont think it will be that much. That is basically playing zone 34 or 35 minutes of the game. Fran almost always starts off in man to man.

We will change defenses throughout and run the 3/4 court press to try and kill time off the shot clock and force a couple cheap turnovers.

Just throwing out a number but my guess would be 60% zone tomorrow night.

I highly doubt ISU will use their best defender on CJ; he has been assigned to the best player every game despite height difference.
Young will either bang with Garza or ISU plays Conditt to try to take advantage of Garza in the pick and roll. They will likely need both due to foul trouble.

Will Prohm grab Iowa players and Jacobsen take swings like the isu punks they are?

How about clown fans in general they already attacked the Iowa Marching Band what will your classless thugs do to our basketball teams?

Threaten violence on our team busses like you have in the past?

But do tell us how awesome isu is. Or must we ignore all that?

Reality and clown fans’ view of it rarely are one in the same.

Five years in football, last years win and tussle at carver, it could get ugly in lames for sure. You know their admin won’t do anything to prevent it either. Pisses me off to think about having to deal with them
