Garza

Nunge might be the biggest space cadet in Iowa history.. the defense after that turnover!?

I really wish all 5 of our starters would be tired just like Garza. We would average about 100 points per game and 50 rebounds. Now that's what I would call "TIRED'!!

A couple key points to remember about Garza:
  • He has 2-4 guys hanging all over him constantly and there are at least 5-6 fouls not called as he’s shooting every game. Not so much a complaint as a clear statement of reality. On top of all the physicality, he plays the most minutes every game unless there’s foul trouble.
  • Arguably his worst game was the most recent IU game — 18 points/2 boards/1 block with subpar shooting
Luka’s low in points is 16 (twice) and his low in rebounds is 2. Garza has only been under 20 points 6 times. He’s had fewer than 5 rebounds 4 times.

Ago Dusunmu is becoming a hotter and hotter pick for POY and he has 5 games scoring fewer than 16 points with a low of 10 (twice) and 5 games with fewer than 5 assists with a low of 1.

Not to knock Ayo, as he’s a heck of a player, but I’m not sure anyone has put a team on their back more than Luka Garza has, both this year and last year.

Regarding POY,.. The other thing I think Garza has going for him is that this is his second year of a two year long POY performance,.. Many thought he deserved the award last year.

That could help him, but honestly, sometimes being the front-runner for a long time hurts you. Look at Peyton Manning not winning the Heisman his senior year. The fresh face or the guy who ends the season on a big run will sometimes get the nod over another guy people spend a lot of time scrutinizing. It might be easy for someone to look at a stretch of games with CJF out and Garza drawing tons of attention and contact and say “meh” even though his season low on points is 16 and even though he’s averaging 23.8 points and 8.6 boards per game in Iowa’s losses (compared to 25.3/8.5 for the season).

Sometimes voters skip the brain when it seems like a pick is a no-brainer.

So what do you think? Did JoeW suck out his mojo?

There can only be one!

"There can be only one" is the belief and motto among the immortals in the original Highlander film, its sequels and spin-offs. It implies that all immortals must fight and kill one another until only one remains standing; this "one" shall receive The Prize.

Rebuttal... :)

Luka hasn't shot over .500 in a game since the Northwestern win almost a month ago. Don't know if he's tired or just frustrated with the way the games are being called, but since the day he arrived on campus, his real strength was finding a way to put the ball in the basket. Now he is missing shots he never missed before.

I thought the NPOY award was stolen from him last season and already I'm hearing some talking heads promoting other names this year. Hard to believe that 25 points/8.5 RBs in the toughest conference in the nation aren't good enough, but I think both Luka and the team need to step it up if he is going to win it this year.

Never have I seen a player get a friendlier whistle.
I guess you're not a Hawkeye fan. Where were you in most of our losses when the other teams never were called for a foul in the last 10 minutes of the game? Or are you related to R. Harper? Sometimes what goes around comes around ;) Every losing teams fans complain about the refs except the Hawks fans....

I think Iowa showed their hand today. Garza has seen 2 or 3 men crashing every game when attention comes to him, they played expecting that and blasted MSU worse than anyone else this year. Going into the playoffs if teams respect Iowa from mid and 3 and leave Garza with man coverage we so can run deep. Worst case we find outside shots, best case we get Garza solo inside with a second trying to come in. Should be interesting.

Iowa could also play inside knowing Garza draws more fouls in the tourney. Maybe more passes out of Garza to open the outside game. I still like this teams chances at a sweet 16 or elite 8.

Hopefully we dont pair with Zaga but of we do JT needs to start.

Keep running your mouth and I’ll take your money. Unless you’re a....chicken, McFly.

Oh geez. Another keyboard warrior that can't see straight and probably doesn't have $100 to his name. If you think that he can go the next month shooting 40% from the field and averaging 16ppg and win the NPOY, especially if Iowa doesn't have post season success I'll have what you're smokin'.

No it's not. For whatever reason Luka has been struggling of late. He's not the same player he was earlier and I'm not sure why but we really need that Garza back.
LOL you really wanna go there after watching him get basically mugged game in and game out? Come on man, you know the B1G is the most physical in the country and Garza has a big fat bullseye on him every single Game. If you didn’t think He would eventually show some wear and tear you’re not paying attention ...

First of all lose the bold print. It's annoying. Go where? Are you saying that he's looked like himself the last 4 games because if you are you haven't been paying attention. He's better than 40% from the field and 16ppg which is where he's been the last 4 outings. He was 60+ % from the field with 25ppg through their first 17 games. He only had 4 games in that entire span under 50% vs the last 4 games in a row That's a huge dropoff. Like you said, he might be just worn down from the grind or as someone else suggested, the chasing down of the scoring record might be weighing heavily on him. It could be a combination of all of these factors. Whatever it is I hope he can find his way through it because if he can't Iowa's shot at a deep tournament run are somewhere between slim and none.

Ol’ Jonesy wants to decide POY based on a 4 game stretch. But not with his favorite Ayo who averaged around 18 and shot just over 40% over his worst 4 game stretch..
