Going to buy PS5

Cartridges is where it’s at

Old School Games GIF by Kinda Funny

Digital:
Pro-Never have to get up to switch games. Never have to go to store to buy game or wait for game
Con-You don't own it. You're renting the license to have it on your device. They can remove the game at any time PS5 and Developer have a dispute
Con-Can't resell
Con-If you sell PS5, next person can't own this game, they will have to buy it themselves.
Pro or Con-Don't get a case/artwork

Physical:
Con-You have to go buy it, wait for it to arrive
Pro-You own it
Pro-You can resell it or loan it out
Con-Can get scratched/Damaged

Another downside is that you have a limit based on which version you buy, of the available memory your PS5 has. That will limit the number of games you can have readily available on the device at any time. May or not be a huge deal for you depending on how often you might switch between games.

Why would you buy discs?

Because some people still buy into the idea of nostalgia.

I am an old fart that likes gaming, I cut my teeth building P.C. gaming rigs and buying the physical games. I decided to go with the Xbox series X when graphic cards became so ridiculously over priced and out of habit bought physical copies of games, As I got comfortable with the Xbox I figured out the need for physical copies was no longer necessary.

If it’s a niche game that I love. That would be a huge bummer to me. Waiting on the game is kinda cool. Anticipation is half the fun.

I just grabbed a PS5 pro. I think you can buy the disc add on, but I just went digital with all the games from PlayStation + (similar to game pass) lots of their PS exclusive games on there, saves you a ton of money

Can PS5s not have SD cards or externals connected?

I'm xbox and haven't bought a system yet without a disk drive but definitely would go no-disc from here on out. I have not bought a physical game in 5+ years.

Only buy a disc drive if:
  • Same specs and price as non-disc
  • You actually plan on buying used physical games and will use the drive
  • You want to use system as a blu-ray player

I don't think any new games are actually fully on the disc at this point. They all have large downloads disc or digital.

You got a link for your buy? That sounds similar to what I want.

I guess you could always pay more for the disc version and have both options. I can see where someone would still enjoy owning the physical copy and as others have mentioned, you can always try to resell it.
But if you’re not wanting to wait and go out and buy the physical copy, you can always download the digital copy.
It’s too bad that you can’t buy the disc and have it downloaded onto the ps5 and be allowed to play the game without it inserted into the ps5. This would allow you to have the physical copy but not need to get up every time you want to play a different game.

Also the new Indiana Jones game is absolutely amazing if you like openish worlds and puzzle solving/collecting type games. Highly recommend. It's almost original trilogy level story/dialogue in my opinion (I'm about halfway through). It doesn't come out on Playstation until roughly Spring 2025 though.

200 hundred extra dollars vs the other version. So there is additional content in the Pro version and a built in ownership of PlayStation Plus account? Making sure that’s worth the 200. I see the storage is double the size. Not sure how big of a deal that is to me.

We can’t have nice things can we.

Im debating whether to finally buy one here in the next month.

I'm always one of the last ones to buy a new system.

GameBoy- released 1989, first got one in 1993 or 1994ish

NES/SNES/SEGA/PS- never owned unfortunately

N64- got it for Christmas '96. First actual gaming system I owned, and that would have to hold until..........

PS2- released 2000, got it in 2001.

PS3- released 2006, got it in 2009. Still have it sitting upstairs collecting dust. Occasionally, I would hop on to play NCAA14 over the years when I wanted to take out my frustrations for Iowa's football failures.

PS4- released 2013, bought it in 2015. Still my primary current gaming system, although it's running a bit rougher lately.

PS5 released in 2020, but the excessive cost and titles exclusive to the system made it tough for me to bail on the PS4 when I still had games I was playing on that system. Not to mention, it seems like the PS5 is on its last leg anyways, with the PS6 potentially set to come out in the next couple of years.

Hear you. I never bought a PS4. Had enough games on the 3 didn’t need it. Love my Red Dead Redemption series, grand theft auto, etc. and various sports games.

That just got added to xbox game pass, I'll give it a try

I was usually about a year or two behind. I doubt I’ll ever get the PS5 as I think I have played my PS4 once in the last year+ since my son was born. I’d much rather hang out with him when I am at home and when he usually goes to bed I start getting ready for bed as well or hang out with the wife for a bit.
Maybe once he gets to the age he starts playing I’ll start back up.

Have a 24 year old son that's a big gamer. Plays both X and PS5 and computer games. I am completely out of touch with this world at this point in my life. Wanted to surprise him and get him something new for Christmas, asked my 27 year old what to get him. That's when I found out you don't just go buy a game anymore and wrap it they down load them? I had no idea what I was getting into, just gave him cash. CSB/

I’ll be honest- I don’t /didn’t know the difference when I bought mine after Christmas. I bought it because it’s what was in stock at Best Buy 😂

Here’s the differences apparently

Ya it's not the excitement like opening that Tecmo Super Bowl game game back in 91. I opened that and didnt unwrap another gift for a good 6 hours

Yeah not seeing enough games yet. To really make the difference on the graphics. The storage for me at least doesn’t move the needle.

I bought a PS4, the latest COD title, and the latest FIFA title in 2016 thinking I would get back into those games like in college. Not nearly as much fun as when pounding Keystones with the boys and I stopped playing the games and just used it as a $400 Roku until I sold it on craigslist in 2019 or 2020. I play Rain Man games (cards or dice) now against the computer mostly and that's all I have the attention span for in the gaming world.

Hell yeah. Still remember when my brother and I got our SNES for Christmas. The rents let us open it Christmas Eve for some reason. We were still up playing when everyone else got up Christmas morning. We also had one of those large popcorn tins with the 3 sections of caramel, cheese and regular popcorn. That thing was empty in the morning.
