..that he assumed was an intruder. Unbelievable. Paranoid schizophrenics afraid of their own shadow are supposed to protect us by being armed?

Half of the people with guns can't handle them or be trusted with them, yet we're all ok with that? Pathetic!

CINCINNATI (AP) - Police in Cincinnati say a man has fatally shot his 14-year-old son in their home, thinking he was an intruder.

Police say the man thought his son had caught the bus for school Tuesday morning, but the teen returned home soon afterward. Police say the man heard a noise in the basement and checked on it with a gun in his hand. Police say the father fired after apparently being startled, hitting the boy in the neck.

Authorities say the father called 911 and the boy was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he died Tuesday morning.

Did his father push him in the pool and hold him underwater until he died? The guy in my story violently killed him with a tool (gun) made only for killing!

89.999.999 gun owners didn't shoot their kids today. But some will in the future.

Only thing that beats a good guy with a gun is a gooder guy with a guy. If only the 14 year old has been armed, he could have prevented this tragedy.

We need to accept that the thinking of the Founding Fathers was overall brilliant, but in some aspects archaic. These were people who accepted slavery as a basis for economics, wanted to expand into Indian land, and needed armed militias to maintain security.

How will we ever solve this if there are so many people like you who fail to see the difference?

Was the driver crossing the center line because he thought that was a good idea? Because the OP's gun owner was surely carrying his gun because he thought that was a good idea.

Guns are specifically designed to kill. Cars aren't. Not sure why some think this is a winning comparison.

No, I'm sure it was an accident, just like this was.

You are more generous than is justified, I think. They were brilliant about some things, especially for their era. But more and more of their foundational work is showing the ravages of time. And we seem unwilling to make the necessary changes.

Why would you NOT call 911 if you suspect an intruder? The second worst part of this - after the useless death of a child - is that dad will have been deemed to have "suffered enough" and no charges will be filed or he'll get a slap on the wrist.
Exactly. If you really think it's an intruder who is trying to kill you, why wouldn't you take yourself out of the equation entirely? Leave the house, call the police and let them handle it. Why would he even risk it?

This has happened in the past as well and we have managed to adapt the document for a more modern era (even if it did require a civil war at one point). We are at another point where modifications need to be done, but I agree, we aren't interested in fixing it. Or, more importantly, the people with the power to do something about it aren't willing to fix it (ahem...oligarchs). We don't have a next time until the economy collapses again.

I don't think the banks will get bailed out next time and if they do I think that is where you will see people at the capital building with pitchforks and torches ready to ransack the place. Once the banks are left to die under their own stupidity, there won't be anyone left to stop the necessary changes from taking place and we might actually have a real shot at modernizing the constitution and adding some amendments. Too bad 60% of the country will have to be out of work to make that happen.

As usual you guys are trying to solve a problem when a "problem" doesn't exist

No. Guns are designed as a deterrent.

Oh my god, do you listen to yourself? Guns were designed to kill. If they were designed to scare they would have noise makers and startling lights like a Halloween thing.

They are made to kill, plain and simple. By not even admitting that, you gun owners are setting yourself up to have guns banned outright. People don't trust gun owners and I hate to say it to you but the country is more in favor of NO guns.

Exactly right. He should be in prison!

The problem with this is that we have only recently developed this gun centered society that s fixated on the notion that they need to own their own arsenal without governmental restrictions. That is a relatively new development. For the first couple of hundred years of this republic, municipalities were able to completely ban guns. The idea that the United states of the 18th and 19th century was a gun carrying society is fiction, at least in cities and towns.

Yep. Even St. Ronnie didn't have a problem with sensible gun restrictions.

So change the Constitution.

Sorry for all you knee jerk reactors, but I live in Cincy and woke up to this today. It's a snowy morning here and the kid apparently didn't want to go to school and snuck back from the bus stop to his basement via a window. This is a tough neighborhood that has had much urban decay and much crime over the last 20 years. Residents have guns because there have been many home invasions in the area.
It's a horrible tragic event. But to now want to do something about it through legislation is just mindless.

That is the dystopian Hellscape that the NRA envisions for America. Survival of the fittest.

Legislation? Dad should go to jail.

So change the Constitution.

It's more complicated than that, as the post by theiacowtipper hints at. Even if the NRA's interpretation of the Constitution were historically accurate, enough people are stupidly crazy about guns to make changing the Constitution difficult. One of the downsides of democracy is that it allows people do stupid things so long as they're popular.

Link to anything showing that half of people with guns can't handle them or be trusted with them? The vast majority of guns are never fired at anyone.

There are 357 million guns in this country. Only a tiny fraction are ever used to harm anyone.

Well that's like asking for a link to show that gun carrying, (not changing economy, population, etc) is responsible for gun deaths going down. Any given time, a gun 'accident' can happen. Any given time, I don't trust half the gun owners I see or hear of. That's the only link I need.

Then you people should have no problem amending the Constitution, right?

Ban his drivers license and ban guns! Everybody wins. Violence is out of control and more and more are being vigilantes.
Here is how I interpret your response. If someone kills a kid with a gun then violence is out of control and guns should be banned. If someone kills a kid with a car then he should be held responsible for his actions but the car has not part.

Why does the person who used the gun and the one using the car get treated differently?

My gun has been sitting on my counter for a week. (I planned to clean it but just haven't got around to it) At least 10 people have walked by it. NO ONE DIED!! Isn't that amazing?

Because driving is a necessity in this country. Guns are not. We have grocery stores, we have a military to protect us. We also have a government that is strong enough to easily take you if they want, so there is no need for guns.
