Trump would not be obligated to Mitch McConnell for his election.

I think the "formal" definition of a Republican, in terms of how the political and intellectual leadership defines it, simply does not match the reality of the GOP base. As much as the GOP tries to say they believe in small government, the fact is most of their base are highly nationalistic people who would gladly support a dictator, so long as he bullies the rest of the country into accepting things to be the way they would like them. This is why somebody like Trump, who doesn't match the GOP's self-identification in almost any way, is so popular among the base.

It's sort of like Bruce Jenner claiming to be a woman while he stands at the urinal. You can say what you want, but you is what you is.
