When Iowa State beats Iowa in football, these are the following reasons:
1) Fluke
2) Super Bowl
3) Iowa more interested in Big Ten games
4) Iowa State places all emphasis on this game, none on rest of season (see #2).
5) No win situation for Iowa
When Iowa manages to beat ISU in basketball (cant recall the number, but its like 1 of last 7 or 8), they are suddenly superior.
No honest ISU fan would claim that they had a better program the years they won the head to head football game. For the most part, Iowa has gone on to have better seasons, but "on that day" ISU was better.
Why is this seasons basketball game any different? Iowa beat them soundly, but ISU has gone on to have a much better season, and are highly likely to play in 6th straight NCAA tourney. Iowa is likely to play in CBI or maybe NIT.
This will sound like a Hawkeye football fan, but I will sacrifice a non-conference loss to Iowa in December, and do well in Big 12 and play in NCAAs. I seem to recall a similar dialogue from Hawk fans regarding a September loss to ISU in football.
After reading this thread, I just found it funny (and a bit hypocritical) to see all the "78-64" comments.
