They are in full blown rut here in SE Iowa Hoyt.. Just came into it Thursday. Bucks running and grunting does every which way but loose now. Just waiting on that MBL(monster buck of a lifetime) to make his mistake!

Don't wanna derail the thread... Sorry folks, back to Grandview.
I can't get away until Sunday but am hopeful they will still be crazy Sun Mon and Tues.

Is there any chance they were required to wrestle true frosh in the freshman division? This is a big tournament--some of the middle weight brackets could get massive if they weren't split up.
Markus Simmons is wrestling the open division, but who knows maybe KJ will pull his redshirt this year if Hall struggles. Nothing would surprise me when it comes to ISU wrestling.

As for our guys I'd say let the freshman get there college feet wet, kick some arse and get ready to bang at Midlands.

Nice win by Gunther over Bretty Bye. Gunther is going to be an interesting one to watch. He had some national accolades coming in, and was an in and out of the rankings type of guy. PapaBearSlim, is there any way you could see him growing into a 174?

Long is a special talent, but he hasn't been wrestling at a high level for a few years. We apparently have big holes at 141 unless BG can get there.

Freshman division:
141: Glynn 2nd
149: Kemerer 1st (not challenged), Glosser 2nd, Wempen 5th
157: Erickson 1st
165: Gunther 1st, Moody 2nd
184: Wilcke 1st (not challenged)
197: Holloway 2nd (lost 4-2 to Hansen from Grand View...uh-oh)

Open division:
141: Ryan 2nd (lost to Long 14-5), Carton 6th (injury forfeited out after losing 16-3 to Long)
149: Lambotte 4th
157: Thomsen 5th, McQuillen FTP

It's just one tourney, but I'm troubled that next year's 197 starter couldn't win the freshman division of the Grand View tourney, and that neither of our 41-pounders could give Long anything resembling a competitive match.

Oh, well, on to next week.

So who goes next Saturday? I don't think Carton has wrestled Heil. Heil majored Ryan last year. Neither did well against Long today but it looked has it Ryan gave him a little bit better match.

I don't think that is a terrible loss for Holloway. Hansen is the only one to beat Wilke in folk style the last two years. I believe that we knew that Holloway would need a bit to transition to full time wrestler, but I expect that he will grow from this loss. Growing pains are sometimes inevitable. Could be a reason why all unattached freshman were is the freshman division today.

Agreed. Not concerned at all. Hansen is a D1 quality wrestler and we're a month into these guys freshman year. I believe Holloway was also shelved for some of the preseason work because of an injury. He obviously needs to improve, but this means very little to me in terms of his longtime viability and potential

Yes.
Solid kid on and off the mat. Joey was one of my kids practice partners in OPRF's club the last 4 years. Multiple time Fargo finalist that owns a win over Kaleb Young.

You say that as if Holloway doesn't have any previous quality wins. Probably think the basketball team will only win 5 games after last night's loss, too. Give him time in the room, he'll be a good one.

Hansen is a very good wrestler, not really concerned with that loss.

I would hope Long would dominate the Grand View Open for crying out loud.

Disagree...Two guys are slotted to be Iowa's starters get dominated by a guy who has been out of the sport awhile. Two things: Long has probably been training and living like a man who has a new lease on life...it's hard to compete with that kind of momentum. Still, the matches should be closer.

Agree with you Chief. As good as Long is, he is not David Taylor during his junior year beating all competition by major decisions or worse. If Long were in D1, I could see him as a top 5 talent at 141. It's worrisome that our potential starters are losing by majors. Yeah, yeah, it's early, but it doesn't bode well. Brody, I hope, will be the answer in due course.

I don't give a crap about Long but I would have him easily ranked #1 in D1 right now at 141. He had more talent in college than the guys ranked there. He is more mature now and has been working hard, he did not just walk out of lockup yesterday. Look how good he was in college while obviously being impaired by his personal issues.

Long has been 2nd and 3rd at NCAA's. I'm concerned as well about our two potential starters getting majored, but it was to a guy who only had questions off the mat.

Does Grandview wrestle any big tournaments this year (ie Midlands)?
