Great Harvest Bread Company in Cedar Rapids is now offering free bread to federal workers who are feeling the effects of the shutdown.

The store sits across from Lindale Mall. And it's set up a "Shutdown Shelf" near the entrance.

The owners say they're making 25 percent more bread than they do on a regular day, and they're putting those extra loaves on the shelf.

They say they're worried as federal workers will soon go without their second paychecks.

The owners say this is one way they could help.

"We're saying if it's you who's affected, that's great, but also neighbors or other customers that knows some affected then they can take bread and pass that along onto them," Laurel Williams said.

Great Harvest Bread also donates extra bread to area food pantries.
