Last night talking to a buddy who follows Iowa basketball and he said you wonder why Fran is always raving about our "shooters" in practice. Its because they are facing the same defense that gives up all the open looks in games.

He said that guys like Olgesby, Ellingson and etc are shooting against poor defense and that's why Fran raves about them. Now I know not to expect much out of our shooters. They will be facing a tougher defense on the floor than what they see in practice.

I don't get on Fran about this. His process is to pump up guys publicly. FYI, Ellingson is shooting 50% from 3-point land this year, which would qualify as great by most any metric.

There are plenty of issues with this team (overall lack of athleticism, can't/won't play defense). Fran talking about our shooters isn't one of them.

If you noticed BE majority of his threes came against lesser opponents earlier in the season. He is having a hard time even getting one off now.

Ellingson is 17-34 on the year through 21 games.
He is 13-28 against opponents not named Savannah St. Barely over one attempt a game.

I'd like to see Jok's or Bohannon's percentages if they only shot 35 times and were wide open for every attempt.

This actually a very good point. Our defense needs drastic improvement.

I think we are to the point where Fran needs to tell the team there needs to be at least two interior touches before a 3 goes up. We aren't a good shooting team, but we keep shooting 3's early in the shot clock when guys are not in position to rebound. The other team gets a break defensively and we get back on our heels on 3-1 resulting in an easy basket.

Good point on the early 3's, especially with Jok no where near where he was 4 games ago. That's where the patience comes into play. Get the ball in to the low post and see if Pemsl can get started; that and stay out of foul trouble early in half for him because of Fran's practice of benching players with 2 fouls. Also by going inside we have a greater chance of picking up fouls on OSU who aren't deep at all since Diop is out for the season. All their starters have a ton of experience but then they only have 3 other players coming off the bench now. Would be nice to get Thompson in foul trouble ; we have 15 fouls with Pemsl, Kriener, and Cook. Lyle, Williams, and Loving are their top distance shooters so it's another case of pick your poison - Thompson inside or the uncontested 3. I think it comes down to officiating and free throws and OSU is a very good FT team. I'm fairly close to the floor but not close enough for the officials to hear me so why do i yell so much at the Zebras?

I wonder if the coaches are going to give the data surrounding multiple ball reversals too? I remember White's senior or junior year something leaked about that where we scored on 75% or so of possessions with multiple ball reversals. Those are the types of things that need to be drilled into the team's heads.
