There was a good point made by Dochterman the other day on the podcast, that when tourney time rolls around, it’s all about the guards. Ulis, Perkins and CMac combined for 14 points against Nebraska and 17 total (Perkins had 16) against Ohio State. That’s not gonna cut it. That puts too much of a scoring burden on Rebraca and Murray. Rebraca has been consistently coming through, playing the best basketball of his career, but Kris has been hot and cold and can’t do it all himself. You also don’t know if Sandfort will be a factor. He can dominate a game when he’s on or be a non-factor when he’s not. The Hawks need production from the back court or they’re one and done.

Just like every other year. It also helps to have veteran players, at least we have that.

In our elimination games the past two years, we've had poor guard production both times.
Against Richmond last year, our 6 guards (Perkins, Bohannon, Sandfort, Toussaint, Ulis, and Connor) combined for 16 points, an average of 2.7 points per player.
Against Oregon in 2021, we had 7 guards (Wieskamp, Fredrick, Connor, Bohannon, Perkins, Toussaint, and Ulis) combine for 28 points, an average 4.0 points per player. (Take away Wieskamp's 17 points, and the total plummets to 11 total points among 6 players, an average of 1.83.)
Needless to say, if we want to win any games in this year's tournament, we've got to get more out of our guards.
