Our guards shot a combined 3-21. No matter how well everyone else plays, you're not going to win many games like that.

OK. But how many dunks and putbacks and 6-inchers did the guards miss? I believe I saw 6-10 and 7-1 guys blowing shot after shot after shot. The truth is that it was a team effort. Stupid passes, weak with the ball, settling for jumpers--just every dumb thing you can think of. Iowa beat Iowa today, and those are always the worst losses to accept. It should NEVER happen. Period.

White and Uthoff cannot do it alone. They draw the best defenders, the double-teams and weak-side help, yet still produce. Almost all of our losses can be blamed on poor guard play. In many of those losses, our guards shot horribly, defended horribly, or both!
As much as I like Gessell and his effort, he's average at best. He's got more heart than most, but he's not the type of guard to get us to next level, which I know you are all well aware of that already. Clemmons is like a cat with 9 lives, no matter how many horrible games he plays, he still plays on because we have no one worthy to replace him.
I sure hope Fran locks down a PG that can score and defend.
