Iowa should never go back to the Midlands if this is successful

Quick refresher here; remember that the Midlands Wrestling Tournament is managed and promoted by University of Iowa wrestling great, Tim Cysewski. Highly unlikely he has animosity, or grudge to carry against NCAA wrestling, or the University of Iowa wrestling.

Who cares?

Tim should understand maybe it’s time to move on or make a big stand. I understand some things would be out of his control, find more control elsewhere or support the wrestlers by moving on.

kind of feels like the hawks are gonna get left in the cold with their own tournament. from twitter, it seems that people are mostly talking about the midlands one.

Is this the Illinois Matmen one? I see Princeton and Campbell have accepted invites to that one. Kind of makes sense for not having to rearrange travel and hotel plans.

You comment, although brief, is exceptionally well stated.

yep this looks like where things are trending. i wonder if at some point they need to swallow their pride and go to that one. what’s the point of another open with nobody good?

If you can’t get enough teams, no reason to do it. Should’ve had commitments lined up before making an announcement

Not sure what to do at this point. Midlands is a mediocre snooze fest without us going. It hasn't been what it was for a long time and seemed to be getting worse. I honestly wouldn't care if we ditched it for good but whatever I guess.

I'm assuming most schools that don't decide to stay home will go to the Illinois Matmen tournament because they already have travel plans and lodging secured. Just send Schriever and Kennedy to that one anyway. The Hawkeye Open isn't being ran by the University but the chamber or commerce or whatever, so they don't have an obligation to go just because it is in their backyard. They can still enter their other redshirt/backups in it.

What’s the point of the Hawkeye open if you have a small field? Maybe do a Quad dual instead?
It looks like one of the sponsors is Wrestle Like a Girl, so I'm assuming they are working hard to get a lot of the top women's wrestling teams and top individual female wrestlers to enter. Some don't watch it, but I like freestyle wrestling and enjoy watching women's wrestling, so I think it'd be awesome if the Hawkeye Open is established as one of the top women's wrestling tournaments in the country.

also wouldn’t mind that either as long as they replaced it with a good tournament. i’d like cklv. see where you are and then take the second half of the month of december to fine tune and prepare for big ten season. i think that mini layoff would pay dividends and it’s one reason why that tournament has gotten better and better while midlands and the scuffle have faded.

Good opportunity to bring attention for the new women’s Hawkeye team to be.

It doesn't sound like we were sending starters to Midlands anyway so not sure how geared up we are about it. Between travel plans and dislike for anything Iowa it might be tough to do. A dual quad round robin or an 8 team seeded dual format might be the way to go. We already saw Princeton, we can bitch slap Bono at the dual, same with NW and Illinois. Michigan hasn't really participating in years, been doing CKLV. The rest of the field is yawnsville. I do see the Hawkeye Open is listed on the Iowa Schedule now.

Tim couldn’t fight city hall. This was most likely a directive from the city of Chicago. I wonder if Midlands would have been canceled, had it remained at its original venue?
Josh is as good as they come. He was instrumental in bringing the Olympic trials to Iowa City, as well as the World Cup. If he had more time to put this together it would be a top notch event.
When opportunity knocks, you take it. Kudos to Josh for stepping up to the plate and trying to salvage opportunities to grow the sport.

I’d imagine a lot of teams going to the scuffle will not attend either the Hawkeye open or the new midlands thing. Scuffle field is pretty big.

I believe the Scuffle is still a go so you’re probably right. Unlikely to get teams who are planning to attend the Scuffle.

Um, wasn’t Midlands in the suburbs?

Uhhhh...

Midlands was in Hoffman Estates. Not in the Chicago city limits.

Willie's tournament is happening in the same venue, so it wasn't the city. Most likely Northwestern AD, maybe with pressure from the state. Is Northwestern a state-funded university?

Doesn’t look like this is gonna happen. Though I’m not sure who the heck Iowa is gonna wrestle, seems like everyone plus a few schools have committed to the other midlands. SMH about what’s going on

Well I saw the Rokfin version getting spun up before Hawkeye Open. And the teams don’t have to change any travel plans. So you can’t really blame teams for going there.

The only saving grace is if we get the full lineup competing at the Hawkeye Open, where at Midlands we were not going to see that, and get at least a handful of D1 teams that we usually don’t see. That would still be entertaining.
