Hawkeye Open

I would say the Midlands just put the last nail in their coffin. Or the State of Illinois put the las nail in the coffin - depending on who made the decision.
considering the new midlands is using the same venue, it’s definitely not the state. plus chicago is hosting much larger sporting events right now anyway. that talking point was just a way for some online to express their political frustrations.

Trackwrestling lists FORTY-TWO teams are sending some or all wrestlers to the new Hawkeye Open!!! Is that correct??? Sounds like a massive #, even if not all teams send a full contingent.
NAIA, NCAA-I, NCAA-II, and NCAA-III teams represented.

nice catch doc, but thought i read wisky was going to midland lite and they are listed as is illinois

bono posted on twitter that they’re headed to illinois. same with goodale and yet rutgers is listed for hawkeye too. i wonder if we’ll see teams send guys to both, starters to one and backups to another?

I’m guessing those are placeholders in which some of the actual counts will be zero.

It looks like one of the sponsors is Wrestle Like a Girl, so I'm assuming they are working hard to get a lot of the top women's wrestling teams and top individual female wrestlers to enter. Some don't watch it, but I like freestyle wrestling and enjoy watching women's wrestling, so I think it'd be awesome if the Hawkeye Open is established as one of the top women's wrestling tournaments in the country.
So lots of time for potty breaks then

hawks should’ve stuck with the Matman open. Teams that committed to Midlands are still going

Totally disagree. Having a tourney in Iowa guarantees wrestlers will get some matches and I’m sure there are some wrestlers that need matches right now. Committing to the new tournament in Cook County would be a risky proposition. It’s entirely possible all indoor events will be canceled there any day now.

We were not sending much anyway from the sounds of it. It's been a pretty unattractive field minus us the past few years.

Sounded like none of the starters were going. I was still interested in Cullan Ayala PK etc against some starters. Just the way it worked out. Two groups trying to do the right thing and it ends up working against each other. Good intentions don’t always work out but you make the best of it.

Im no insider but think we should give it some time. They just announced this today to happen in Iowa City, not the same place in Illinois on same date, I dont think coaches/teams can just commit without going to money people first with proposals. The people promoting seem to know what there doing and are prepared to sell tix. We could get some great commitments in the coming days. At any rate, I think this is just the beginning of an annual event that will grow.

I hope you’re right on the last part. Seems there are people in the area willing to step up, organize and run an event without taking up our staff’s time.

Hoffman Estates is in Cook County which just mandated vaccines for pretty much all public venues like restaurants and bars! Total chaos!
Right but the poster I was replying to said it was the fault of Chicago’s mayor. He’s a douche, don’t get me wrong, but the mayor has nothing to do with it

You don’t live in Illinois, do you?
just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean everything bad that happens was because of them. if it was the state, the new midlands couldn’t happen either. use your brain. this was northwestern’s administration not wanting to deal with the headache.

You guys do realize the real reason those teams are all going to MatMen, right ?

It isn’t because one got announced before the other or any crap like that.

Hate to break it to those of you who maybe don’t follow the sport very close, but Iowa is pretty universally hated by every D-1 team out there. They hate our coaches and program in general. The teams going to MatMen are using this as an easy middle finger to the Hawks.

Or maybe they have travel plans and hotel reservations at that locale Already. Keeping it simple..

Lots of people commenting who no absolutely nothing about the state of Illinois and how things are done.

A look at a certain twitter feed and someone giving off the vibe of enjoying working against the other guys.

i would also go to that one if i was a coach for one main reason: i wouldn’t have to make new travel and lodging arrangements for my entire team in 3 days. pretty easy choice.

I kinda of got that vibe too, but there were some bad tweets from hawk fans trying to shit on the new midlands vs the Hawkeye Open in Xtreme Arena - I think it was just responding to that

you keep saying this as if it means anything lol. your contention is that the state shut down midlands but is allowing virtually the same tournament to happen anyway? letting your emotions make you irrational. direct your anger at the true culprit, northwesterns administration.

yeah there was a pretty tasteless tweet from some lars guy that instigated. prior to that willie was very positive towards the hawkeye open and said it was unfortunate they didn’t know about one another until it was too late.

Sometimes Willie seems cool but other times he has been completely unprofessional. I don't know him to know if stuff he says is genuine or talking out both sides of his face.
