Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

A lot of things went wrong in tonight's game that shouldn't be huge issues moving forward. But one thing I'm growing increasingly concerned about is Clark's shot selection. So far this year, it's been pretty bad and tonight might have been worst of all.

I know Clark can make long threes, but even she doesn't hit them at a great rate. They are literally one of the worst shots our offense can generate. Far too often this year she's shot a long three very early in the shot clock, and she's missed almost all of them. We're not a great rebounding team, so the result of most of those really isn't any better than a turnover.

Hopefully the 4th quarter will help her realize she needs to attack the basket more and just let the three-pointers come. Our offense is far more dangerous when she does.
100% agree. She’s a shooter, but 1/13 from three / 9/27 isn’t a good thing. When she drove to the basket in the 4th, she was able to score. Making shots, including open layups (with the exception of Monica early) was not good, but I’m going to attribute that to the two weeks off, and if I must, some of Duke’s defense. They did not give a lot of good looks from the 3 pt. line and somehow didn’t commit a lot of fouls under the basket.

Rebounding was truly AWFUL. Did anyone else hear Rebecca Lobo mention blocking out drills after giving up a rebound on a Duke FT shot? Rebounding has been my biggest pet peeve during the Bluder era.

Clark made most those long-range shots last year, and when she did it opened everything else up. But yes, at some point it's time to call it off. There are lots of other good shooters on the team.

From watching Iowa play this year, there is no evidence of any defensive improvement.

There is *some* merit having your starting PG play a few minutes with your reserves at the 2 through 5 to help the scrubs get game experience with an actual leader on the floor. But you could tell Clark was just hunting that last rebound. -_-

Anyway, it all worked out, game over, great win!!!

edit: There were little things here and there that were less than stellar in the first half, but I loved our focus and clean basketball in the third quarter! Best stat of that quarter: 0 turnovers. I feel like that was the first quarter this year where we finally executed the fast break to our fullest potential, not forcing overly difficult passes and knocking down open shots when we had them. I was also impressed how the bulk of the run happened with Czinano on the bench with three fouls. Since our half court offense usually stagnates when she's out, this game easily could have gone the other way in that moment...

More importantly I'm just really glad we bounced back strong from the disappointing outing at Duke.

Back from the game, the effort on defense and rebounding looked much improved to me. Only 11 turnovers for our style of play is Ok. Clark made a couple of bad passes but a number of amazing passes.

Looks like they knocked the rust off.

Big (nice) article in today's Quad City Times (cannot find a link) re Kelly Krei. She is now a D.O. based in Moline working in sports medicine.

We often compare Kate Martin to Kelly Krei because they both do/did the important things that don’t show up on the stat sheet.

Big Ten's Rankings are lower than I expected:

Nebraska 4
Ohio State 18
Maryland 29
Indiana 35
Michigan 36
NW 64
Minnesota 73
MSU 78
Purdue 121
Penn State 122
Rutgers 161
Illinois 193
Wisconsin 263

Remaining Non-Conf Games:
IUPUI 39
UCF 41
Iowa State 10

These are questionable in my book. 28 teams better than Maryland? 34, then Indiana? 35 with Michigan? I will give anyone big time odds that Nebraska is not a 1 seed come tournament time! Don't have to be a homer for the Hawkeyes to question these rankings!

No reason to get too worked up about the NET rankings this early in the season. It's nothing more than an attempt to rank teams "objectively" based on purely numerical criteria. It's an unavoidable quirk of having a limited sample size of games and wildly disparate non-conference strengths of schedule that some teams are way too high and some are way too low. Some anomalies will remain over the course of the season, but in general, the NET will start looking more like the AP poll (and the eye test) as the sample size of games grows larger.

That write up sums it up pretty well. These two teams are so much alike that they mirror each other. I think another key matchup will be McKenna and Ashley J. They need to keep Ashley off of the offensive boards. I was really impressed with McKenna's defense in the 2nd half Sunday. And whoever shoots the 3 ball the best may win this game, so Iowa needs to play outstanding perimeter defense and shut ISU down.

We will (hopefully) get a lot more offense at the 5 from Czinano, but they will get more offense at the 4 from Joens. After that it comes down to which backcourt is more efficient -- who takes care of the ball, moves the ball to find the open shooters, and then makes those shots. While Clark may be the best individual guard on the floor, it will more come down to which team plays as a more cohesive unit.

The inverse of everything can be said for defense. Who can successfully guard the 3 point line and close out possessions with rebounds?

Foul trouble is a concern for both teams but different reasons.
--Whenver Monika gets into foul trouble I get nervous. ISU has 4 big bodies to throw at her, maybe bait her into fouling.
--ISU plays a 4-guard system yet they only have about 4.5 healthy guards right now. Will they be able to play good enough defense, without fouling, for 38-40 minutes?

An intangible I've been wondering about is how Clark will handle another hostile road environment. I hope she learned from some mistakes at Duke and is in a positive headspace going into Ames.

I'm sure that ISU will be extra motivated to give Ashley Joens her first win over Iowa in her four years, though neither team needs any more motivation in this year.

Here is a little history lesson. In 2018 Tania Davis hit a step-back three with 2.6 seconds left for a 73-70 win in CHA. IIRC the plan was to get the ball to Megan Gustafson for an easy 2, but she was covered. Freshman Ashley Joens had the final shot to beat her hometown team, a corner 3 at the buzzer that missed. Then in 2019 seniors Doyle, Meyer and Ollinger let Iowa to a second consecutive win in Hilton, plus also went 4-0 in their careers. That was the first group of seniors to do that in 30 years. Then last year, Caitlin Clark led Iowa back from a 17-point 4th quarter deficit to a soul-crushing 82-80 victory.

Your years are off. Iowa won at Hilton in December 2017, which was our first win there in many years. December 2018 was Tania’s winning shot in Carver, then December 2019 was our second straight win at Hilton.

This is a game I hope Iowa comes out on top, but even if they lose I hope it is a close game, and it won't be as bad losing to a 10th ranked team on their home court. It will be a win-win no madder what. I'm sure ISU & fans are going to be fired up with Feuerbach coming back hopefully she can knock down some 3's and quit the crowd.

I don't think either Duke or Iowa State (if it happens) would be bad losses. The issue is our non-conference schedule didn't have many opportunities to add good wins before the Covid pause, and now we have 3 fewer. The middle of the Big Ten also looks down from where it was last year, so conference play might not be the boost we thought it would be.

ISU pulling out all the stops trying to beat Iowa in something.

Just read that Hilton will have free admission for students and some other promotions.

If the Lady Hawks win again, I fully expect an epic meltdown from old man Joensy.

Free admission for women’s game isn’t a change. Iowa does free admission for students as well. But yes probably advertising that a little more today.

Would love to see Clark start draining more threes at a higher % tonight. Iowa on the whole will have to be really efficient to compete with the Joenses. Ashley Joens will probably be able to create offense at will against this Iowa defense.
