Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

This is where Goodman is really missed. I don't think many realize how strong a player Goodman really is. She's a consistent scorer and defensive presence. Great passer and rebounder also. Monika has her move that she's great at, but Goodman just finishes with strength around the basket and scores or draws the foul. If she were healthy Iowa would not miss Monika so much when Monika is on the bench. Goodman is not going to run like Monika does but she's dynamite in the halfcourt and was likely due to have a big year. She really came on strong at the end of last season.
It would have been interesting to see Goodman and Monika on the floor at the same time, this year some occasional hi- to low post action

I said last year that Iowa should do just that. Switch to the Triangle for spurts like when they had Megan/Hannah. Might work with O'Grady also as she has good range and it would open up the perimeter more for Clark also

Not sure that would work as neither can shoot from the free throw line distance from what I've seen - other than free throws

O'Grady has plenty of range. She has seen limited minutes as she needs to add strength. she's hit a few jumpers from the elbow already this season.

Drake lost at home earlier this week by 15 points to one of the Dakota schools.

The NCAA has voted to expand the women's tournament to 68 teams, which is now even with the men's tournament.

The updated projection by ESPN has Iowa as a 2 seed, which would mean they would be hosting a regional in Iowa City. Mercer (15), Colorado (10) and FGCU (7) were also in the regional, but it is obviously way too early to care about that part.

15 of Iowa's 30 games are against teams either in the new projection or in the first 8 out. That is not even mentioning UNI, Drake, UCF or Seton Hall, who are all expected to be decent teams.

South Dakota (who is receiving votes in the coaches poll) looked great in this game. They led Drake 40-19 at half and Drake was pretty clearly outmatched on both ends of the floor. Don't want to speak too soon but it made me wonder if they are going through an adjustment period with their new coach. Drake's game against ISU tomorrow should give us good film to scout. The SD/Drake game must have felt pretty easy for SD after playing a very challenging opening week of games vs. Oklahoma (shout out to Jennie Baranczyk for winning her first few games there!) and #1 South Carolina.

It's about freakin time. They also need to make it a point of emphasis to televise all 68 games and to spread those games out among multiple TV outlets which options to live stream all the games as they do with the men's games.

Wouldn't read much into that. SD won their league last year and are favorites to win the Summit again. Drake is not as strong as last year but should still be a quality opponent and likely a bubble team for the NCAA.

In hindsight, the 2021 portion of our schedule is really imbalanced. The three best teams we play before January are likely to be Iowa State, Michigan State, and Duke, and we play them all within a week in early December. I'm not sure we will learn a lot about the team until that stretch.

Factoring in the quality of our opposition, that was arguably the worst half of defense this team has played in the last two seasons.

The coaches might want to seriously consider scrapping the 2-3 zone. I know Coach Bluder likes the ability to switch between defenses. I know past Iowa teams have done fairly well in the 2-3. But this team is just so bad at playing it. It's looked horrible even against our worst opposition.

Random thoughts after the Southern game:

Thought we'd see O'Grady get a few more minutes, but she only played 5 in the first half, 4 in the second.

Our press breaker in Q1 was abysmal without Clark on the floor. There was a time last season early in conference play when teams were pressing us. By the end of the season we had shown we were able to make teams pay so we didn't see as much full court pressure, but we definitely aren't there yet.

Southern was shooting 18.2% from 3 before tonight. I don't blame us for giving them some space to shoot in Q1. They went 4-7 from three in Q1 then went 0-7 in Q2. But when they switched to a "dribble drive, throw the ball up, and crash the offensive glass" strategy, we lacked the physicality, athleticism, and positioning to stop them. Part of this was the 2-3 zone as Braydon said. We gave up 7 offensive rebounds in the 2nd quarter alone.

I thought we had finally broken out of our shooting slump in the first quarter, and we ended the first half 5-8 from three. But we finished the game 6-23... 26%. Our current defense is not good enough to keep shooting that poorly. I wonder if part of it was that Southern fouled us so much in Q2 that we were never able to really settle into an offensive rhythm in that second half -- but still.

We got fouled 19 times in the first half, but Southern only ended with 29 team fouls... Refs swallowed their whistles.

B1G+ commentators: I liked the play-by-play guy, as I said last time, but I really need the color commentator to never do another game. A color commentator should offer analysis -- all he did was distract from the game, talk about himself, or tell us how Clark was to her triple double. He needs to go.

Hawks played well enough tonight. Caitlin didn't shoot much but managed 16 points and she had to have 10 assists and probably 8-10 boards. I like Kylie Feuerbach and Sydney Affolter, I think they add a lot. Wanted to see a bit more Addie O'Grady. This is a gritty Hawkeye team but as has been mentioned, the 2-3 zone needs a lot of work.

Were you there? Outside of the first quarter, the Hawks were very careless with the ball. O'Grady has a ways to go with her shooting. She missed back to back to back threes. Taiwo was very careless with the ball when Southern went with the press. Caitlin had her pocket picked from behind several times on the fast break. Southern had a few more athletic players and that worries me when we play quicker teams. Most of last night's mistake are very correctable but if they play that way against Maryland or Indiana they will lose by 30. Hopefully they look better against Drake on Sunday.

Yes I was there and you have posted many of the low points of the game. I also saw Caitlin w/ a triple double and some good play by Warnock, Czinano, Feuerbach and others. Yes we need to play better than that against better teams but I think we will.

Didn't see the game but yikes 18 turnovers and 26% from 3. The former is correctable and the latter is just flukey (they averaged 40% from 3 last year). Really tired about seeing/reading about the same defensive lapses. It's not all personnel based. Iowa doesn't have the athletes of Connecticut but neither do most Big Ten teams.

On the bright side, it's good to have your major clunkers now instead of when you play the big D1 dogs.

I think you guys are forgetting the fact that there were 46 fouls called along with normal whistles for balls out of bounds and such. It seemed like every 15-30 seconds there was a whistle, so it was hard to get any flow to the game.

Anyone watching ISU @ Drake? Drake leads 25-17 after Q1, shooting 5-11 from three. Ashley Joens with just 2 points on 2 shots.

I have it on while watching men’s game and the Canadiens. Bulldogs will not be an easy win. Loss to South Dakota was a surprise.

What men's game?
(kidding... kind of)

ISU up 47-42 at half. Drake was leading 31-20 before ISU finally starting playing some defense and taking care of the ball better. It also helped that Ashley got going and now leads all scorers with 16. ISU did a much better job getting her the ball and playing through her first.

Agree that Bulldogs will not be easy, but disagree that the loss to SD was a surprise -- the Coyotes are unanimously considered one of the best mid majors this season.

Both Iowa and Drake have no games the week of Dec 12. Maybe they'll reschedule. Unfortunately that's likely also Finals weeks, so prob not.....

I can confirm that is the week of finals so I don’t think a reschedule will happen unfortunately

While we wait for Iowa to get back to basketball, here's a Big Ten power ranking now that we have a few weeks worth of results.

1. Maryland- The Baylor win was a great start to the year. We should learn more about where they stack up nationally in the next week.

2. Indiana- The Kentucky win was nice. The Quinnipiac scare wasn't. We'll learn more about where they stand nationally after the next couple weeks.

3. Iowa- Iowa's start hasn't been great, but we haven't been in danger of losing either. Cancelled games against Drake, USC, and Seton Hall will have an impact on Iowa's resume. The first week of December will be even tougher coming off this long layoff.

4. Michigan- They've had a couple close calls against mid-majors. Not a great start to the year.

5. Ohio State- They haven't played anyone, but have also won big thus far.

6. Nebraska- The Creighton game was close, but they've otherwise blown out their opponents. They are the biggest riser compared to my pre-season expectations.

7. Northwestern- DePaul is projected to be a tournament team, so losing on the road against them isn't a bad loss. Still it's one more loss than the top 6 teams have.

8. Michigan State- Fordham isn't a bad team, but you'd still like to see a projected tournament team win that game, even if it's on the road.

9. Penn State- Penn State and Minnesota are interchangeable to me, but Penn State only has 1 loss so I'll stick them here.

10. Minnesota- On the one hand, the Gophers have two P5 wins, with one on the road and one at a neutral site. They also played UConn closer than I thought they would. On the other, they already have three losses, including one at home to Jacksonville.

11. Rutgers- They've lost at home to Stony Brook and had close calls against Fairfield and Harvard. This team looks significantly worse than last year.

12. Purdue- They're 4-1, but the loss was a blowout and all of the wins over mid-majors have been closer than you'd like.

13. Illinois- The Illini wouldn't be favored to win the Ohio Valley Conference at this point.

14. Wisconsin- Chicago State went 1-27 two years ago and 0-14 last year. This year so far it is 1-4, including a 27 point loss to Western Illinois. And yet that Chicago State team beat Wisconsin at home by 9. The Badgers might be the worst team on Iowa's schedule this year.

NW & MSU > Nebraska - Fran McCaffery would be proud of Nebby's non-conference schedule.

Feels pretty fair. I think Rutgers eventually moves up, but nothing to complain about.

Iowa lost some good games off the schedule. Probably would have won all three, but would have seen some challenges.

Hawkeyes stay on the 2 seed line, which would allow them to host in Iowa City.

USC and Seton Hall were featured in the preseason First 4 Out and both have fallen off the bubble so far. Iowa does not play either now.

IUPUI has fallen out, but likely due to Covid issues they have had. UCF has jumped onto the Next 4 Out.

14/23 remaining games are vs teams in the projection or on the bubble, which does not include IUPUI. Touch schedule ahead.

Should be interesting to see how we bounce back from this covid interruption. We will have not played a game in 2 weeks to playing Duke and Michigan State in our first week back. I too think it'll be interesting to see how this impacts our resume and just overall experience playing in actual good games for our younger players.

I assume we'll see a fairly small rotation again against Duke, Michigan State, and Iowa State. Against UNI O'Grady and Affolter barely played. I was hoping the games against Drake, Seton Hall, and USC would give them more experience against better opponents and allow the coaches to start trusting them more. Now they won't have that opportunity.

Something else I haven't seen discussed much: what if one or more players has long-term health effects from Covid? Most people who get Covid after taking the vaccine are fine, but not everyone.

I just wonder too what new policies Coach Bluder will have for the remainder of the season to isolate the team and try to prevent a recurrence. And BTW, we just got a message about the Drake game that season ticket holders will receive one free ticket to a future game, to give away presumably. Not much of a bonus, but we would have been fine with nothing. That also tells me there is no chance of a makeup date.

Normally Lisa reduces the rotation numbers when they face better teams. But with this covid thing will fatigue factor into the rotation?

Minutes Per Game (4 Games)
Caitlin Clark - 29.3
McKenna Warnock - 25.1
Gabbie Marshall - 24.5
Monika Czinano - 22.8
Kate Martin - 22.6
Kylie Feuerbach - 21.9
Tomi Taiwo - 18.8
Sydney Affolter - 11.6
Logan Cook - 10.5
Addison O'Grady - 10.4

-Minutes vs Northern Iowa-
Caitlin Clark - 36:33
McKenna Warnock - 35:19
Gabbie Marshall - 30:45
Monika Czinano - 26:27
Kate Martin - 23:28
Kylie Feuerbach - 18:40
Tomi Taiwo - 12:13
Logan Cook - 9:28
Addison O'Grady - 4:05
Sydney Affolter - 3:02

I think it will be interesting to see off of the break how the minutes get spread out. Unless they decide to keep Czinano on the court for 30-35 minutes like last season, O'Grady and Cook will get big minutes in big games.

I also really like Feuerbach and Taiwo off the bench. Tomi has averaged 7.5 ppg so far and has quietly been a good contributor on both ends. 6/8 from 3pt range.

Affolter had a good second half vs Southern, but as a freshman she is still learning, much like O'Grady is.

Warnock and Clark rebound (15.3 rpg) , but Czinano, O'Grady and Cook (11.9 rpg) need to get on the boards more as the season progresses.
