Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

The Big Ten looks like it's all over the place at the moment. The top teams have a couple really good wins. The middle of the conference hasn't done much to inspire confidence. And the bottom of the conference has some atrocious losses.
This weekend will provide some insight
Maryland NC State
Indiana Stanford
Purdue West Virginia
Illinois Dayton
Michigan Oregon State
Maryland Stanford
Northwestern Texas A&M
Indiana Miami Fl
Rutgers Arizona

I just wonder too what new policies Coach Bluder will have for the remainder of the season to isolate the team and try to prevent a recurrence. And BTW, we just got a message about the Drake game that season ticket holders will receive one free ticket to a future game, to give away presumably. Not much of a bonus, but we would have been fine with nothing. That also tells me there is no chance of a makeup date.
Saw four players at the men’s game last night with no masks or social distancing, so don’t think any isolation protocol is in place.

To be fair to Michigan State, two of their starters had season ending injuries a couple of weeks ago. It would be more surprising if that didn't lead to some unexpected losses.

Halftime of a couple early games

NC State 49 Maryland 27
Fordham 24 Baylor 20

Surprising results so far

Kyle, any info when the women will start practice again ? Thanks!

I was told the team was able to do small group 2-3 players and coach type sessions, but I do not know when the team will be back together to practice in full.

Baylor's all-star front court went 4-23 in the first half, but they rectified that in the second half. That game ended in a blowout.

Diamond Miller is injured for MD, and Benzan and Masonus didn't travel with the team due to a non-COVID illness. Even so, it was a poorer showing than I expected.

Considering it is now Monday and Iowa is scheduled to play at Duke this Thursday, I would be concerned about that game happening if the Athletic Department is quiet today. I would be very disappointed cause I might have tickets...

Michigan State hasn't been particularly good yet this year, but I really don't want Iowa returning from this long Covid pause to play a conference game, even if it's at home. Hopefully the team can still play the Duke game and knock some of the rust off.

After the football game Friday Gary Barta was interviewed and was asked about WBB and covid. He said a few of them had been practicing and the rest of them were to join them the beginning of the week.

Yeah as far as I know media availability is set to in person on Wednesday morning, so I would say Duke game is a full go right now.

A tweet liked by Clark:

Agreed. For what it's worth, Iowa has struggled recently when we play Michigan State in December, even though we have avenged those losses later in the season.
2020-2021: L @ MSU 82-86 on 12/12, W vs. MSU 87-72 on 3/12
2018-2029: L @ MSU 70-84 on 12/20, W vs. MSU 86-71 on 2/7

Watched the Duke/Troy game on the ACC Network yesterday. Duke is bigger than I expected and not especially quick. Good 3pt shooters (made 40%). I think perimeter defense will be the key.

This is what I have seen so far in my research. Will have a preview of this weeks games Wednesday after we meet with Bluder and players.

Although I want the Duke game played, I'm very worried about how it will go. The team is coming off its worst performance of the season, hasn't been able to practice as a team for a couple weeks, and some players likely haven't been able to practice at all. Duke is also potentially underrated with so many transfers, and this is the first big travel road game of the season. That's all a great recipe for an upset.

I will be pleasantly surprised if we win

Yup, Duke has a talented roster that should get even better as the season progresses. I'd rather play them now than in March, in other words. Also the road game aspect will be tough. I agree with you that a game in Cedar Falls in front of half Iowa fans isn't a real road game. ;) That Cancun trip would have been great to just get us used to playing in an unfamiliar environment. There was a lot of really poor shooting at a lot of the games at resorts over this past week -- probably a symptom of playing in strange courts and lighting put up in the convention halls of vacation hotels, but also a lot of teams on their first real road trip of the season. I hope we don't succumb to that, but we will see...

I think the game time might actually favor us. 9pmET will feel later for Duke but it will only feel like 8pmCT for us.

What has it been, a little short of two weeks? This break in the action may actually be a plus in the back stretch of conference play when each game will be huge. We might not be as "worn-down" as other teams... looking for that silver lining!

I am expecting a loss. They weren't fully in sync before, and a forced break in practice time won't help that. However, better to knock the rust off Thursday and be ready for Michigan State on Sunday when it really counts.

tonight? thought the game was Thursday

ISU is having some tough luck with injuries to key pieces of their rotation. Not starters, but the bulk of their depth at the 1 through 4. Fritz had been a starter until Aubrey Joens started shooting lights out as of late. Sad for them as I want women's basketball throughout the state to be strong.

Random question no one here can probably answer: do the players undergo health screenings after confirmed Covid cases? I know last year a top Minnesota Wild prospect had Covid and was set to participate in training camp when the team doctors found he had myocarditis as a result of Covid. Players have died on the court, pitch, ice, etc. from having undiagnosed cases of myocarditis.

My guess is yes? For football last year Big Ten required it and I know an Iowa baseball player that had it could not return to practice until his tests came back.

A lot of things went wrong in tonight's game that shouldn't be huge issues moving forward. But one thing I'm growing increasingly concerned about is Clark's shot selection. So far this year, it's been pretty bad and tonight might have been worst of all.

I know Clark can make long threes, but even she doesn't hit them at a great rate. They are literally one of the worst shots our offense can generate. Far too often this year she's shot a long three very early in the shot clock, and she's missed almost all of them. We're not a great rebounding team, so the result of most of those really isn't any better than a turnover.

Hopefully the 4th quarter will help her realize she needs to attack the basket more and just let the three-pointers come. Our offense is far more dangerous when she does.

Seconding this. I wasn't as concerned after earlier games because her 3P% was good, but I'm concerned after tonight.

Iowa's team success depends firstly on Clark being an elite facilitator, secondly on her ability to finish at the rim / slash / draw fouls, and lastly on her ability to shoot. Yes she's the best pure shooter on the team, but she's also the only one who can effectively drive the ball. When she doesn't take on that role, the team doesn't play as well because Clark isn't generating open looks for them.

So watching Clark go 1-13 from three yet continue to pull up farther and farther away for long, rushed shots is so frustrating to watch. I know ESPN likes to talk about her "unlimited range," but as we saw tonight... it is limited. She was getting to the basket pretty easily, shot 8-14 from 2, and had 8 assists. So I'm baffled why the coaches didn't reign her in a bit and focus on what was working. We saw glimpses, and those were the moments where Iowa made little pushes.

Of course it doesn't help when the team is missing wide open layups. -_-
