Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

Yeah throwing the best of the best, Navy Seals, soldiers, nurses and cops out of the workforce for a vaccine that isn't really a vaccine but a treatment since we have more cases than ever with a supposed 80% vaccination rate.
"Best of the best". Ok
Of the 60 or so covid patients in our local hospital 75% are unvaccinated.
60 covid patients in this hospital means there are no open beds.

These games do not work in Iowa’s benefit in any type of way.
Exactly, the early games were against big teams where we would be favored even on the road. It keeps us from improving. Lastly the toughest part of our schedule is Feb where wins would be much harder

To those fully vacinated, their risk of serious symptoms is reduced but not 0. Hospitals are getting their surge from largely unvaccinated people. Personally those that didn't get vaccinated deserve it
But is this really true or just another scare tactic. The real solution is nuke wuhan

Thought it was curious that the TV PBP announcers, who were clearly NOT in the CHA to call the game, went out of their way to NOT mention why the 2 missing players weren't in uniform.
Addie O'Grady is a treat to watch perform.
Nice touch by Lisa to get Caitlin back on the floor to break the CHA scoring record.
In general, the team still missed way too many bunnies, seemed a step slow, and had too many turnovers against an inferior opponent.
Northwestern won't think twice about taking advantage of those weaknesses on Thursday. They beat Iowa twice last year and are lethal again this season.

Yup Redbird, the team this year has missed more bunnies so far then most teams miss in an entire year. Hopefully this will change when the team finally plays on a regular basis.

Also just a funny note but it says the attendance was 7,307 but if anyone else was there, there is no way there was that many 😂

My mistake. Yes I do a game thread in the Hawkeye Lounge and forgot this thread wasnt in there as well.

But yes Czinano and Warnock will be back for the next game.
That is good news. This team really needs some court time together. Hopefully they can string some games together here in the coming weeks.

Jan said on the post game radio that they both need to pass the heart test first. Hopefully they will pass, but no guarantee as of yesterday. Heart test on Thursday. (edited)

It would be awesome for O'Grady to get enough minutes and play at good enough level to contend for the Big Ten All-Freshman team. The front runners thus far seem to be Shyanne Sellers, G, MD and Alexis Markowski, C, Neb. They are the only two to have won the Freshman of the Week award twice.

I agree. I know Bluder likes to play Logan because she is a senior and has experience but Addi seems to make an impact every time she is on the court.

Logan Cook is also very popular with players and coaches and is a an excellent locker room presence. But with that said, O’Grady has a very high ceiling.

How tall is Addi? She really battles on the boards.

Not trying to knock Cook. She will still be needed to back-up McKenna at the 4, maybe 8-10 min/game ideally, with a few of those minutes also going to Affolter. But have O'Grady be first off the bench at the 5, and use Cook strictly for spot minutes at the 5 if O'Grady is making mistakes or both she and Monika are in foul trouble.

I would also like to see the coaches use O'Grady situationally late in games. The IUPUI ending is a good example. O'Grady is a threat to block shots and is already a good rebounder. Czinano doesn't really block shots and isn't a good rebounder. I would've much rather had O'Grady in the game for the last defensive possession. Plus we still had timeouts to put Czinano back in for offense if needed.

Would O'Grady have changed that last possession against IUPUI? Probably not. But maybe Clark wouldn't have guarded so closely if she knew there was a rim protector in the game.

I don't think Northwestern is particularly good this year, and they should have some issues coming off a long Covid pause. That said, if Czinano or Warnock aren't back from Covid yet, we might be in trouble.

Last year, Northwestern defended Clark better than any other team we played, but they didn't have much of an answer for Czinano. If Czinano is out, O'Grady is going to have to carry a big offensive load in the paint. Not sure she's ready for that quite yet.

Plus if they are out, Addi is gonna have to stay out of foul trouble otherwise we’ll have no real 5

Northwestern has a bit more of a defensive post presence than they did last year -- 6'3'' frosh Caleigh Walsh is averaging more than 2 blocks per game along with 10 points and 5 rebounds on just 20 some minutes per game. But more than anything, their backcourt is athletic and scrappy and always gives us fits. We will have to take care of the ball on offense to minimize live ball turnovers, and be at least *passable* at containing dribble penetration. Also, their quickness makes them a much better offensive rebounding team than you'd expect, given their size. So in many ways, their strengths line up directly with our weaknesses, which always makes me anxious. Hoping for some revenge after those close losses last year...

I’m sure NW will slow the game down to a turtles pace. Monica C. and Warlock are obviously no longer in isolation as they were on the bench for the last game. They just need to pass the heart test, which if positive would be extremely rare. It is my understanding the test will be administered Thursday.

CRAP, If their heart test isn't administered till tomorrow, that would mean they haven't practiced at all this week.

I was told they were expected to be available for tomorrow’s game on Sunday. Things could change, but that’s what I heard Sunday.

Here is the combined stat line for Marshall, Martin, Taiwo, and Feuerbach tonight:

93 minutes, 5 points (on 2-15 shooting), 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 8 turnovers.

We aren't going to win many games where more than two position's worth of playing time are producing results like that. Obviously the team has a bunch of issues right now, but the 2 and 3 positions have been black holes far too often this season.

I am now a little worried about them this season. I just don’t understand how they look like a completely different team from last year.

I would qualify this statement by saying, "they look like a completely different team from the end of last year. Last January, we lost not once but twice to Northwestern in very similar fashion to tonight. I think we're taking for granted that the team chemistry peaked at just the right time last year, heading into postseason play. But it's gonna take some wins to get back there... Here's to holding out hope!

Pfffft.
The air is leaking.

I expected improvement from last year, especially on defense. Not so much. Pretty much down to 3 players carrying the load this year.
