Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

Eh, I think it's very easy to blame the officials when the team you are rooting for loses. Like it or not, in our losses, there have usually been reasons for the foul discrepancies. Clark for example struggles to get a favorable whistle when she goes up off balance, falling on her own accord. Officials will usually not reward that type of out of control drive with a defensive foul call. On defense, I think IUPUI did a great job working that ball around and making us defend for the entirety of the shot clock. We got tired and started getting beat more, which led to us committing fouls.

We have to hope and pray that IUPUI dominates the Horizon league this year so this loss looks slightly less bad on our resume. IUPUI currently sits at 61 in the NET (which doesn't mean much, yet, obviously). This might be a "bad" loss, but not a "terrible" one. For comparison, UCF is a very respectable 34 (currently).
I talk about officiating maybe 1-2 times a season in the recaps I do, mostly because I think bad officiating is generally a wash. But today's game was different. That was an entire 4th quarter where 50/50 calls were being called on one end and not on the other.

How do you play defense when any contact results in a shooting foul? How do you attack the basket or feed the post when you're getting bumped on shots and nothing is being called?

There was one sequence in particular where Williams hooked O'Grady to get position in the paint. It was a blatant offensive foul, but they didn't call it. Despite that, O'Grady got back into position and made a perfect block. She got all ball. The referees called it a foul.

That's two missed calls within seconds of each other, and neither was a 50/50. Referees get those calls right 90% of the time. To have both go against Iowa is just really hard to stomach. Even harder where the foul discrepancy was so large.

Getting the feeling this team is going to massively under-achieve. The start-stop to the season isn’t easy but good God they have not looked together very much so far. Yes it’s sort of early but they should look better than they do and it only gets harder from here.

I respect your observation here! Thanks for getting into some details.

On a different note, this is what comes to mind for me tonight: A team isn't as good as their best win, but also isn't as bad as their worst loss. Still rooting for this team 110% of the way!

You know there is no such thing as a 110%?
100% is the max!
Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine and they’re so many ignorant athletes that say this all the time!

Wow! Me and my stupid brain never realized that "giving 110%" is just a figure of speech! Thank you so much for valiantly pointing that out to me.

I notice that this year Caitlin Clark is shooting 25% from three-point range. Last season she shot 40%. Are teams guarding her deeper this year, have her mechanics changed, is it bad shot selection? As a result her average is down six points or two threes per game. For those who have seen her games this year, is there an identifiable issue?

I won't claim to have seen anywhere near all the games, as it's only large parts of 3 of them this year, but since I'm a bit bored, I'll answer:).
Her shot selection has always had some head-scratching moments in both years, IMO. While unquestionably a great player, there are moments where you think "why?!" even if they happen to go in. I don't think it's a mechanics issue, and without seeing a shot chart, I can't say with authority if her questionable shots this year are more frequent or from worse locations, compared to last season. I would say they just aren't going in as frequently.

Well, the 3-point line did move back for this season. But I don't know if it affected Caitlin Clark. Maybe not seeing two 3-point lines threw her off a little bit?

I have coached H.S. Basketball for over 20 years. Seen many many refs, both good, bad, and horrible. In general, Big Ten women’s basketball refs are bad and extremely inconsistent. Poor positioning, poor decision making, poor teamwork between refs. It is not solely in Iowa games. All Big Ten teams deal with it. Bad all around. You would think the league could either afford better refs or have better training.

How/why does any player go in a shooting slump? If there were obvious answers there'd be no slumps. :) If I had to guess I'd say it's mental. She and everyone else is expecting an as-good or better season than her spectacular Freshman year. It's a lot of pressure. And there are a lot more eyes in the stands watching with those expectations.

Shot selection has been an issue at times, but she just can’t get shots to fall. The whole team has been missing 3s and Lisa Bluder is even perplexed by it. She says that they make 3s in practice and said that even breaking down film there aren’t more than 3-4 ‘bad 3pt shots’. Really feels like something that has to turn around in the second part of the season.

Does anyone know if any of the seniors are planning on staying for a 5th year?
Our guess based on a pre-season video was that Czinano would stay, but that Cook and Taiwo wouldn't. In the video Cook and Taiwo said something like "hi from the seniors". Czinano appeared otherwise in the video, but not in that part. I don't think we've heard anything official.

Other than a long-term injury to a starter, it's hard to think how this season could've started much worse. We've lost to basically every competitive team we've played. We keep having long pauses to interrupt any flow the team might get. And this almost certainly won't be the last cancellation.

Obviously the team can still overcome everything and have a good year, but this is a fair bit more adversity than seemed reasonable when the season started.

At least they will be able to practice during this stretch. When they had covid they couldn't even practice. Covid is here to stay, need to figure something out.

What a pathetic joke being played on these kids.
Almost two years in to the dreaded Covid and they're still getting postponed?

She got paid and doesn't care anymore. It's the result of NIL. ;)

I have only watched the UNI, Duke and ISU games, but it seems to me if her first shot doesn't go in, her approach is to take a step back to get a more open look for the next shot.

I have seen all of Iowa's games. Honestly, her 3's just aren't dropping. Most of them are almost going in.....but not quite. Her mechanics look the same to me but I'm no expert. Her overall game is very solid this year. It could be that the start and stop nature of this season has affected her a little bit. Caitlin will be fine.

Has increased defensive intensity hurt her shot? Thinking I've heard announcers say her d is better this year anyway.

Illinois has postponed their game on Dec 30 due to their covid issues. We are scheduled to play them Jan 2.

Might make sense for Iowa to play Minnesota this week. The Gophers had their Dec. 31 game postponed due to Covid issues within the Northwestern program. With Covid issues in the Illinois program, would really suck if Iowa lost 2 games this week.

If it does happen, it’d be their 2nd 2 week break of the season

I was thinking the same. It might be time for the conference to get proactive and have healthy teams play games while they can.

My wife's boss and his girl friend were going to Jamaica this week, but they had to postpone it since she tested positive for covid and she had no symptoms. The last 4 months here in western Wisconsin we have had more cases per week than anytime last year.

My head is spinning from all of these cancelations.

@KyleHuesmann , what are the protocols, exactly?

If a team like iowa is 100% vaccinated, it was my understanding that NO ONE got tested unless a player had symptoms (cough, fever, body aches, etc.)

So, once a player has symptoms:

* That player gets tested.

* Who else gets tested?

* At what point does the whole team & staff get tested, if applicable?

* How many players do you need to play?

* Was the issue with Penn State or Iowa?

Thanks for your reporting.

And thanks @TomKakert and @Blair Sanderson for making it happen.

Badgers and Penn State have Covid issues and canceled. Illinois is just coming out of protocol. August 23,2021 Big Ten released a statement that games between conference teams that had to be canceled because of Covid 19 would be forfeits.

As far as I know, you have to exhibit symptoms to get tested and Lisa Bluder did say that “multiple” players and coaches had symptoms, which would mean they would have to get tested.

Not sure on how many you need to play a game.

The issue this time around was with Penn State.

Iowa/Penn State is currently listed as a cancellation, which would be a forfeit for PSU.

Illinois/Maryland and Wisconsin/Purdue are listed as postponed, so not sure why that’s different.

Big Ten is likely going to change the rules here soon with the new CDC rules saying asymptomatic positive cases only need 5 days of isolation.
