Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

I suspect the focus on defense is wearing her down. Tired legs make for missed 3 pointers. The lack of a good backup point guard is a real problem this year. I'm hoping McCabe can play an effective point. I also think reps are an issue. I expect her to adjust and bounce back. She seems to like shooing in the Nebraska gym, hopefully she breaks out of her slump there.
Gabby should really be the backup point but we don't have another shooter to play the 2. We're also sorely lacking depth at the 2 position.

Quality depth is an issue everywhere but the 5 really.

I've been to every home game this season and the remarkable difference between last year and this year is 3 point shooting: plain and simple.
This team was sloppy with the ball last year and may be even sloppier this year. Last night was head shaking how careless they were with the ball, but team speed was the biggest difference last night. NW simply blew past every defender Iowa had on the floor. It was stunning.
Gabby Marshall has not elevated her game this season and gets beat defensively by quicker guards.
Czinano and Warnock looked gassed early in the game. Covid must have impacted them.
Caitlin Clark is really struggling with her deep shot and she looks hesitant to take her trademark deep 3's now.
Love Addie O'Grady's upside and maturity, but last night she lacked in most every department. At one point in the 2nd half during a timeout, Clark could be heard barking at Addie to get tough.
Kate Martin is tough as nails but looked really slow last night and out of synch at times.
Feuerbach looks pedestrian so far, but has some quickness to her game. She needs to contribute more offensively.
Cook will never be more than a replacement for Monika when she gets in foul trouble or needs a breather. She's just a step slower to react than most everyone else on the floor.

Last night's game was very disappointing. NW is very well coached and a good team, as was IUPUI, but this team is regressing. They turned it around last year and I'm hoping that happens again soon.
I pretty much agree with all of your points. This team looked very slow and disinterested last night.

It is hard to argue with all observations that others have made regarding their play this year. When Clark goes out they struggle mightily with any sort of smooth flow. The turnovers increase, the scoring decreases and the flow just isn't there. If I was an opposing coach and Clark went out for a breather, I would slap the press on because there are no athletic ballhandlers. I really hope for the next recruiting class (Class of 23), they can find a backup point guard who is first and foremost a facilitator as opposed to a scorer. Not easy to get someone who is only going to play a few minutes but if Clark gets in foul trouble, Covid or heaven forbid, an injury, this team is screwed.

Couldn't agree more that one PG on a roster is a recipe for a disaster. I have a somewhat out of the box solution.

During the FIBA U19 tournament this summer, Clark spent much of her time playing the 2 guard. I think they should seriously look for a starting point guard in the transfer portal (someone with at least two years of eligibility remaining, probably in the Summit/Horizon/MVC, at least HM all conference this year if not better) and move Clark to the two. Caitlin can then spell her as necessary at PG. We would have lots of 2's to spell Caitlin. I think CC might get better looks by moving without the ball.

Of course, Clark could essentially veto the idea. I don't follow the WNBA enough to know, but do wonder whether her future may be at the 2 anyway.

Clark needs the ball in her hands to be at her best. The thing she does better than almost anyone in WBB is pass. She creates opportunities for teammates that others just can't. She is also really good at creating shot opportunities off the dribble, be they jump shots or drives to the basket.

Could moving her to the 2 get her slightly better looks on threes? Maybe. But I really don't think clean looks is the issue with her shooting. She's getting plenty of those now and they aren't falling.

Basically, moving Clark to the 2 would change her offensive game significantly, and likely remove several of her biggest strengths. I think it would make the offense worse, not better.

Amy Williams has Nebraska playing at a high level right now. Two players have really fueled their improved play this year - PG Jazz Shelley (Oregon transfer) and true frosh Center Alexis Markowski. Markowski has been a force on the boards; IMO she is a leading early candidate for B10 Freshman of the Year. Shelley is a very good ball handler/passer that is very active on both ends. Sam Haiby is solid also.

Hawks will have their hands full. Czinano needs to stay out of foul trouble and the Hawks need to have a good day shooting from beyond the arc. No silly TOs and crash the boards!

A Hawkeye win today would be surprising. Nebraska is a team that highlights the shortcomings of the Iowa roster 2-8. Nebraska is not super athletic, but still significantly more athletic than Iowa. Unless Clark comes close to repeating her crazy good game at Lincoln last year, I worry that Iowa will have a hard time staying in the game.

27-24 after 1. Should be a much bigger lead. Iowa gave up a 12-3 run and doing a poor job on the boards again. However, guards are driving through the lane and not letting Monica get triple teamed. Nebraska in early foul trouble.

Great half from Warnock. Safe to say her three-point shot is back. Clark's shot isn't falling still, but otherwise, she's been spectacular. 17 points, 9 assists, and 6 rebounds in a half.

The defense hasn't been great, but everyone on Nebraska's team can shoot, so that was always going to be a tough defensive ask. Taiwo made some early mistakes and hasn't been seen since. She's played only 2 minutes compared to 10 from Feuerbach. Hopefully we don't run out of gas in the second half.

It's just so more fun with shooting and scoring going well. The rebounding started well then disappeared

The game is to fast for O'Grady. She looked like she was sleep walking out there.
It appears to be more learning body control then the game being too fast. Her skillset is very raw yet and it's going to take a season or two in the training room to really hit her peak.

Ediger played so well today! Did exactly what was needed of her. Even though she only had 1 rebound, she used her body very well inside and was boxing out well. It was our guards who weren't crashing the boards hard enough. Ediger also had some great passes on offense which showed up in the box score as well.

Not exactly sure why O'Grady got pulled, but I'm glad Ediger got this chance. They are both young and need to develop, but I'm looking forward to watching them over the course of their careers.

Fun game today! McKenna was very impressive, the best player of the game for us. Caitlin's 3-point is still missing but happy to see the 12 assists.

Addie was a step slow today. She was great last week but was not in the flow of things. Ediger did well. We really missed Sharon Goodman in this one and even Logan Cook would have helped a lot.

Goodman has been missed all season. She's just a good well-rounded player and a defensive presence in the post. O'Grady will get there in time. She just needs to work on playing under control.

Ediger looks solid and hopefully we'll see more minutes from her going forward. Give her some minutes at the 4 as well with Cook out.

Great road win over a solid Nebraska team, despite a lot of poor officiating. Coach Bluder was all over the refs and had it not been close might have gotten T.

Yep...except for volleyball and bowling...Nebraska’s got nothing.
Hate Nebraska but they would have been in a position to win had they not fouled so much. That being said there were a lot more fouls that could have been called.

Haiby should have gotten an F1 for elbowing Gabbie in the face. That was not a basketball move. The Nebraska fans were complete @sshats with their behavior. Nebraska players and coaches were pretty douchey too. The burrito lift the players did on the sideline was also pretty douchey.

If you don't like the foul calls, stop teaching your bigs to hip check in the post. Nebraska could have been called for twice the fouls they were called for.

Actually I thought the refs were pretty good today for a road game, they could have called Neb. for a couple more fouls, but all in all not bad. I just wish we would get some home-cooking from the refs.

5 good minutes for AJ today in meaningful game time. Lisa needs to sneak these young players into the game even if it is only for a min. or two.
