Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

From the radio show, it sounds like it's still a possibility that the Indiana game could still be rescheduled although it wouldn't be on the weekend
Thinking outside the box, the NCAA Tournament selection show is March 13th, but the Big Ten Tournament ends March 6. Could we play that game sometime during the week in between those? Otherwise, I really don't see where it fits.

Indiana still has three games to reschedule, Rutgers and Illinois besides Iowa. And there is only one date most likely possible, the 22nd. I have no idea how the Big Ten will decide which one to prioritize. Iowa could play Indiana there on the 20th, then again here two days later. That would give Iowa 4 games in 8 days to end the regular season.

The standings will be a mess no matter what happens from here on. Most teams have now played 12 games, Iowa included. However, Illinois has only played a paltry 7 games, Indiana 9 and Northwestern 10. In fact, Michigan, Maryland and Indiana have not played Illinois at all and probably won't, thus costing them an easy win or two. Iowa is fortunate to have rescheduled their game with the Illini when they did after Nebraska had to postpone.

Rather than focusing on the excellent season they are having some on the ISU board are hell bent on bad mouthing Clark and demeaning her accomplishments. Stat stuffer, no interest in team success, selfish, whiner, etc, etc. Very puzzling since Wild Bill has one of his better teams.

It really makes no sense. Why bash a 20-year old girl and not celebrate the success your team is having?

I think it's worth updating my conference prediction for Iowa already given recent developments. Currently we are 8-1 in conference with 8 (or 9) games remaining. Here's how I see them breaking down:

Should win games: at Wisconsin, vs. Minnesota, at Rutgers. These are 3 of the 4 worst teams in the conference right now. We should absolutely beat each of them. And the good news is, if we do beat each of them, we're probably locked into the NCAA Tournament. If I'm right about these, that gets us to 11 wins.
Still hoping you're right about Minnesota and Rutgers. Minnesota is a different team since Powell quit, and has enough athleticism to give the short-handed Hawks trouble.

I also worry about our defense against Minnesota. They're a good 3-point shooting team and they got a guard that can light it up.

Iowa 42-37 over Minny at the half. Iowa squandered a 13 point lead. Gave up 10 offensive rebounds, with 4 on one possession.

Clark was arguably fouled on every possession of the second half. I realize we don't want the refs to call a foul on every possession, but at a certain point it becomes a safety issue. There's no reason for teams to stop hitting her specifically because the referees aren't going to keep calling fouls.

Marshall only played 26 minutes and wasn't out there at the end. Does anyone know if she was on some sort of minutes restriction? Even if fully cleared, I understand the logic behind easing her in slowly.

One detail that stood out to me tonight -- we really need to protect the ball better when we have a lead and are trying to eat the clock. Feuerbach played well today but she got the ball swiped away from her twice in the closing minutes. And I'm not trying to pile on her specifically because we all know it's happened to Clark a number of times too this season, in late game scenarios. That said, I loved that play in the final 2 minute when we worked the ball the entire possession before Clark found Monika for a wide open layup off the pic and roll. Got a big cheer from the crowd and that really was the dagger at that point.

We absolutely have to crash harder against Maryland this weekend. I often hear Bluder say we aren't boxing out well enough. But does anyone else get the feeling that we are focusing too much on boxing out, and not enough on actually securing the ball? Like sometimes we try to box out but our guards get pushed too far under the basket. So even though they're doing the "right" thing, they're just not in a good position to get the ball.

We listened to the post game and Coach J said they were happy with the defense Tomi and Kylie were playing and felt in control after the beginning of the 4th quarter and opted to give Gabby additional rest and allow her more time to heal.

On the post game Coach J mentioned we had three home games left and we play Indiana twice down the stretch. Jamie asked Bluder about the schedule and she said to watch for news, but it looks like the Indiana game should be made up. Coach J mentioned we have Maryland next and finish with Rutgers and Michigan so i took this to mean we'll have Indiana back to back games.

On a great # of those Clark is the one that initiates the contact. She was told by one of the refs tonight “When you create the contact you aren’t going to get the call.”

I think Bluder is just trying to ease Marshall back in.

We don't box out and we don't jump. Too much watching the ball instead of anticipating the rebound. But maybe it's because Minnesota couldn't miss and they were trying to set up the transition offense.

Bluder definitely needs to hit the portal for a backup PG.

I also really hate our offense. Yes we're scoring points but players are too often trapped in a corner or against the sideline. Screens are late. It always seems like whoever has the ball is double teamed. Our perimeters shooters don't want to shoot even when they're open. If you have daylight halfway through the shotclock, then shoot the f-ing ball already. There needs to be more movement and our guards need to attack the rim. When Tomi and Martin started attacking the rim, the offense started to flow again and it opens up spacing for Monica and relieves pressure on Clark.

Bluder needs to find a way to light a fire under this team and just bring the intensity up a notch. Every other team is in overdrive and most of the time we look like we're stuck in first gear and Clark is trying to push the rest of the team up an icy hill.

The team turned it up in the 4th quarter but I want to see that level of intensity for 40 minutes.

Just my opinion, but if you're getting moved on a boxout, you're not boxing out correctly. The player closer to the basket should have the advantage. It's easier to push back than forward. I say that as a 5'8' male who played a lot of post in high school. Basically the only way I could get rebounds was by boxing out well.

I think our biggest problem other than Czinano being a solidly below average rebounder for a 5 is that our guards/wings ball watch too much. Watching Michigan, their guards are great at moving toward the basket when a shot goes up. They do it most possessions. Hillmon is of course a great rebounder, but having 4-5 bodies around the basket is a huge help.

Clark is really good at moving towards the basket sometimes, but she ball watches a lot too. Marshall basically doesn't rebound at all. Taiwo and Feuerbach are slightly better than Marshall, but not significantly so.

I want to see the whole team crashing the glass on every possession. Clark can push transition even if no one else has a head start. I think securing stops is more important than the few cherry-pick runouts we get when the guards try to get in transition early.

Oh, and one last rebounding pet-peeve: if you're more than 5 feet away from an open shooter once they've caught the ball, don't close them out. All it does is take you out of a potential rebound and risk a foul. Instead turn around and try to rebound the shot. Our defensive rotations are bad, so we do that a lot. It certainly compounds our already bad rebounding.

Not securing the ball is also a function of having a roster mostly filled with players who are not quick to the ball. The lack of quickness in the front court is one reason why Iowa needs Clark’s rebounding.

I can’t comment about what the refs said, but I watched the game and Minnesota was bumping and pushing Clark all game. Right before the half she was knocked to the floor and that was a no call. Several times she got pushed out of the way on defense including one play where a Minnesota player gave her a forearm to the face and the refs didn’t review it for a flagrant foul. Clark was getting pushed as she approached a screen several times and didn’t get a call.

We have no games the 15th-19th. It'll probably fit somewhere in there.

Indiana plays the 17th.

If they're rescheduling it during the actual season time, my shot in the dark guess is Tuesday February 22nd. That would result in a brutal 4 game in 8 day stretch, but is probably the only realistic solution unless they can shift the Rutgers or Michigan game.

Still perplexed as to why the game isn’t Friday or Saturday. Have no idea why Michigan State game got rescheduled over the Iowa game.
