Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

I would like to see Addison either start or at least be getting equal minutes with Monica from here on out until she proves to me that she isn't just as valuable. If she or Addison or Sharon would transfer, I will not be very happy.
I really hope neither of them transfers as well. Maybe hawkbuck will have some insider info for us again in the offseason about possible transfers. I really like Addison's game. I just hope she's happy with Monika coming back but it seems like that's what's going to happen. Addi has played in every game this season so far and is averaging nearly 10 minutes per game.

I share this worry, but a short-handed and tired Indiana team can be beat, at least once, I hope.
I'm pretty sure someone said in here that we could beat Maryland especially since they were without their starting PG. We saw where that went.

A sweep of Indiana the next two games is possible. They are running on fumes. Their starters have been all been playing 35+ minutes per game all season. It clearly showed last night in their loss at Nebraska, as they got outscored 20-8 in the 4th quarter. Their all-conference post is still out with a knee injury. And they play Northwestern at home on Thursday while Iowa is off until the game at Indiana on Saturday.

Iowa won't win the conference this year, but there is still a lot to play for.

I think we can beat any team in the conference. Especially if the team actually commits to trying defensively for a full game. But if they don't commit defensively, it's going to take Clark going crazy, the team shooting the lights out from three, or both to win any of our remaining ranked games. Can't say I'm overly optimistic, but it's certainly not impossible.

It's just so frustrating as a fan to watch the same problem happen that happened last year. The players said in the offseason "oh we could've won a lot more games if we played better defense" well yeah and the same thing is happening this year. Plus lack of rebounding absolutely kills us. The amount of times we let the other team get easy second, third, hell even fourth-chance points is beyond frustrating. There needs to a fire lit under them but I thought that would happen earlier after our losses to Northwestern and Michigan.

We are missing Warnock so badly on the glass. Czinano is a bad rebounder, and otherwise we have 3 guards who are "listed" at 6'0'' trying to crash the glass. Our lack of depth at the 4, or even any available bodies at that position really, is hurting us.

Give Angel Reese and Michigan credit though -- she/they have been rebounding well all season, not just against us. They just exacerbated the problem.

I agree about Warnock. I really do not understand why Bluder has not groomed AO for the 4 and 5 positions.

This isn't why we're losing games, but really disappointed in the lack of contribution from Feuerbach. She doesn't even look like a D1 player out there.

She and O'Grady both seem to be impacted significantly by confidence. When things are going well, they're sure of themselves and play fine. When things aren't going well, they play slow and timid and tend to turn it over a lot.

Coach Bluder has a tendency to bench our bench players for the rest of the game if they make a couple mistakes early on. It happened to Feuerbach last night, happened to Taiwo at least once this year, and happened to O'Grady a couple times when Ediger could step in. I understand why she does it, but it doesn't help either with their confidence issues IMO.

If we still had AJ, Cook, or Goodman available, I'd totally agree with you. But with Addy currently being our only other option at the 5 if Monika gets into foul trouble, we can't afford to risk having them both out there picking up fouls at this point. Maybe we'll see two posts together next season.

It's not like we haven't done something like that before either. I imagine that since it's like Monika stays, then maybe having 2 posts in together will be Bluder's way of having Addi and Sharon stay and not transfer.

I think this is probably Coach Bluder's reasoning, but I think it's overly conservative. To me, it's similar to when coaches take out star players until halftime when they have 2 fouls.

My opinion on this is premised on the team actually being better with O'Grady playing the 4. I don't think that is definitely true, but for sake of argument let's assume it is.

Czinano and O'Grady could both foul out if O'Grady adds minutes at the 4. But it's relatively unlikely that either foul out of a particular game, and especially unlikely that both do.

And even if both were to foul out, I'm not sure that's a disaster. Defensively, Czinano already provides little defense or rebounding as the 5 for 20 some minutes per game. Would Kate playing the 5 for a couple minutes really kill us?

Offensively, O'Grady doesn't do much in the low post when she's in for 12 or so minutes each game. Would the offense fall apart if we went 5-out with all guards or if Kate were playing in the high post instead for a few minutes?

I just don't think that the relatively low risk that both O'Grady and Czinano foul out is worth limiting the team earlier in the game if O'Grady at the 4 would actually make the team better.

Do you guys think that Iowa's history of having one dimensional post players is the result of player limitations or coaching philosophy? What I'm trying to understand is why all of Iowa's post players are essentially low post scorers that don't expand their game as their career unfolds. For example, Monica is essentially the same offensive player she was as a sophomore. I remember watching us play Nebraska, Ohio St and Northwestern and seeing their post players shoot and make threes. At least a threat of an outside shot by our 5's would draw their post out to defend and maybe open the lane for others who are shorter. I'm not even looking at defense because that issue has been debated relentlessly.

A little of both. Several of the 5s have had range and just didn't really use it much beyond 10 feet. But I don't know if I would say one dimensional. A lot of our posts in the past have been phenomenal rebounders and shot blockers.

The game is certainly changing. I think recruiting shows that the team is trying to adapt. The post players coming in next year have range. Wettering has range (but needs to get healthy) and so does O'Grady.

One-dimensional describes Czinano fairly well, but not Gustafson. Gustafson was a good defender and one of the best rebounders in the country. If this team had Gustafson, we would be a Top 10 or even Top 5 team.

I think the reason Gustafson and Czinano have stayed around the basket most of the time on offense is that they're the most efficient scorers in the nation on those shots. We don't want them to take a shot from further out if they can get one in close instead.

In the pros there are more defenders who can stop Gustafson in the post, so she's had to expand her game a bit and be a shooting threat from further out.

I also would not call Bethany Doolittle/Morgan Johnson one dimensional as both were skilled shot blockers.

Don't give up hope yet for Iowa to finish in the top four in the end. The final standings are going to be hugely impacted by postponed games by the other leaders that will never be made up against bottom feeders. See below. They will be short wins they should have had, compared to Iowa and Ohio State who will get all 18 games in.

MD - at IL
IN - at RU and vs IL
MI - at IL

I think Iowa can sweep Indiana, which is running on fumes, and take care of business at Rutgers. The final home game with Michigan will be critical. One game at a time, I know, but think positive.

Indiana plays Thursday, Saturday, and Monday. Saturday and Monday are against us so they are going to be very tired. Agree that we have to take business at Rutgers and the Michigan game is going to very important. Should be a great crowd.

The men play Saturday at 1:30, and the women are at 3 on BTN+. I can’t remember. If I wait until the men’s game ends, can I stream the women from the start or can I only join live?

Usually you can stream from the start, but I will say that sometimes it glitches and kicks me out if the actual stream has ended and I'm not caught up to live yet.
Only up 40-37 though. Indiana has been weird as of late.
I mean, Northwestern is good at hanging around, as we well know...

Wow, that 4Q evoked terrible flashbacks of the IUPUI game... But we hung on!

I'm most proud of our rebounding. We only gave up FOUR second chance points in the first half. (20 in the second when IU was making their comeback.) We haven't looked that good on the glass all year. I know the scoring balance stands out more, but the rebounding balance was great to see as well.

Indiana is typically a "slow it down and set up their offense" type team. But in the 4Q they didn't have time for that, given the deficit, so they started attacking the basket hard early in the possession, determined to get to the basket or get fouled. It was a lot like the Ohio State game in that respect. I'm curious if Indiana will go to that strategy from the jump on Monday and potentially risk the game becoming a running match, in which case our fast break offense would have the edge, on paper at least. It also helped that their 3 point shot started falling.

Yeah IU's press was effective at the end, but I'm not to worried about it on Monday. They will have played 8 games in 4 days and have even less guard depth than us. I doubt they'll have enough gas in the tank. And when we're in "attack" mode as opposed to "just trying to hang on" mode, we're typically very good at breaking the press and scoring quickly to get teams to back off. It's the more aggressive perimeter pressure against our half court offense that IU showed in the 4Q that I'm more worried about.

Nebraska Associate Head Coach Chuck Love has been suspended and Ashley Scroggins has been removed from the roster. Not sure what's going on here but it doesn't look great.

I don't think Indiana has enough gas in the tank to press the whole game. The press also wouldn't have worked but for the referees swallowing their whistles in the final few minutes (which happens in most games, so I'm not terribly upset by it).

That said, we'll need our A-game again to beat them again. As good as we played, if they would've made a few more jumpers early, that game might've been totally different. They did a great job of taking Clark out of it for most of the game.

I hope Lisa reminds them of the blow out at Minnetonka and the return game in Iowa City.
