Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

McCabe is McKenzie Meyer 2.0. If she can be even an average defender she will be tough to keep off the floor.

@BraydonRoberts5 as good as Czinano is she is not in the same league as Megan Gustafson. Czinano is a scorer only. Megan was a complete post. She was an elite rebounder and solid post defender and most of the time was good for 20 points a game. Megan's off games were still double doubles most of the time. Megan's been able to stick around the league despite being undersized and not having three point range consistently. Czinano might have a nice career overseas but she doesn't have a chance at getting to the WNBA.
If she plans on paying in the WNBA she needs to learn to dribble...

Charlie Creme bumped Iowa up to a 4-seed! Tennessee and Indiana fell out.

Now we just need to take care of business in the BTT! That opening round matchup vs. Northwestern (or, less likely, Minny) will be a test of our grit.

Thursday, I'm a Golden Gopher. (assuming they have cooled down since the 4th quarter of the last game we played them)

I'm sure this is a mistake by the interns working on its website but according to ESPN Louisville dropped out of the AP poll this week and in its place is Louisiana, which jumped 22 spots, the biggest jump in history I believe. Good for a laugh. Iowa is No. 12, and five Big Ten teams on top of the conference standings are bunched together from 10 to 14.

With the conference season over, Iowa has re-written portions of the Big Ten conference-game record book.

1. Caitlin Clark's 169 assists, 9.38 per conference game, are a record, besting Samantha Logic, who had 162 in 2015 (also 18 games), for 9.0 per conference game.

2. Clark's 4 triple doubles in conference games in a season is a new record (Samantha Logic, Grace Berger and Kachine Alexander had the previous record at 2).

3. Clark's 18 assists against PSU on Jan. 25 is the conference game record (Kathleen Doyle is tied for 3rd with 15).

4. Clark's 29.2 ppg in conference games this season is 3rd all time, behind Rachel Banham's 30.5 ppg in 2016, and Anucha Browne of Northwestern in 1982 at 29.4 ppg.

5. Clark's 46 points against Michigan on Feb. 6 is 5th in Big Ten history in conference play (the Big Ten does not include Big Ten tourney play in conference games records, but if it did, Clark would be 6th and Gustafson would be 5th).

6. Clark's 9 conference games with 30+ points may or may not be a conference record. It is more than Banham's 7 in 2016, Gustafson's 7 in 2019 and Mitchell's in any year, but Anucha Browne might have equalled or exceeded 9 30+ games in 1982 (I can't find a game log for her).

7. Iowa's 88.0 ppg in conference play is an Iowa record, and good enough for 4th all time in Big Ten conference play behind Maryland, 89.7 ppg in 2017 and 89.3 ppg in 2021, and Ohio State, 89.2 ppg in 2016.

8. Iowa made 287 out of 337 free throws in conference games, or 85.16%, smashing the previous conference record of 80.83% by MSU in 2003 (194-240).

9. Iowa's assists in conference play, 19.94 per game (359 total), are the 5th most in Big Ten history, with Iowa now holding 4 of the top 5 spots (Iowa 2019 - 21.8 pg; Iowa 2001 - 20.8 pg; Iowa 2021 - 20.7 pg; Maryland 2017 - 20.0 pg).

10. Indiana's 42-point 4th quarter against Iowa on Feb. 19 broke the previous record for most points in a quarter in conference play, set last year by Maryland with a 41-point first quarter against Iowa.

11. Lisa Bluder now has 233 conference game wins, which may have tied Vivian Stringer for the all-time Big 10 conference game record, depending on how Rutgers chooses to classify wins and losses for the 2021-22 season. Coming into this season Vivian had 233 conference game victories and Bluder had 219. According to a Nov. 8 article on nj.com, Rutgers has discretion under NCAA rules as to who would get credit for Rutger's wins and losses this season, which were 3 in conference play, but Rutgers had yet to decide whether it was going to give the wins and losses to Vivian, or Tim Eatman.

What's at Stake for Power 5 Teams During Championship Week?
by Mechelle Voepel, ESPN.com

Big Ten
It's weird to think the last-place team in the league, Illinois, had such an impact on who won the league regular-season title and who will be the No. 1 seed in Indy. That's because neither Maryland nor Michigan got to face the Illini, as their postponed games were not made up. Considering Illinois' 1-13 record, those were close to guaranteed wins for the Terps and Wolverines. That would have meant a four-way tie for the title between Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and Ohio State, with the Wolverines as the Big Ten Tournament's top seed.

Instead, Ohio State -- which didn't play in the NCAA Tournament last season because of a self-imposed penalty for NCAA infractions -- is the surprise top seed. The Buckeyes were under the radar in the league and went 2-3 against the other top-three Big Ten seeds. Michigan went 5-1, Maryland 2-3 and Iowa 1-3. You can see why the Wolverines are aggravated. Maybe that energy will serve them well in Indianapolis.

Right now, Michigan, Maryland and Iowa are all in ESPN's projected top 16, which means hosting the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Ohio State, Creme said, could grab a top 16 spot, too.

Indiana, which lost four of its last five, likely needs a run to the Big Ten final to climb back into the top 16. The Hoosiers were the Big Ten team that made it furthest last season in the NCAA Tournament, falling to Arizona in the Elite Eight.

As long as the Committee agrees with Creme's assessment, I think this works out really well for us. I'm not sure that BYU can improve its resume substantially as a 5. Indiana and Maryland should play each other in the BTT, so one will be eliminated with helping its resume. Tennessee has major health concerns as is trending down. Notre Dame just got blasted by Louisville. And Oregon jumped to a 4 seed without substantially improving its resume.

As Creme says, as long as Iowa wins in the Quarterfinal we should be in good shape for hosting.

Just want to say how proud I am of this team for being Big Ten Regular Season Champs for the first time since 2008! Who would’ve thought this would’ve happened! Braydon’s article explains it perfectly! You really couldn’t have written a better script to end the regular season.

9 and 10 are the epitome of Bluder's teams. Great offense- shares the ball well. Nearly completely inept at playing good D for a complete game.

They played very well on defense after about the first 8 minutes yesterday.
Yes - but I still have yet to see a complete game. Yesterday was as close to anything I've seen before. I will take 3/4 of a game if we're winning. But most of the season we've had or 1 great quarter and maybe a good/decent quarter.

I don't want to ever give up 40 in a quarter ever again to anyone

Have always enjoyed watching Gabbie Marshall play. Anyone have a clip of her last second basket just before halftime? TIA

We are #14 (a 4 seed) according to the Selection Committee in the latest reveal. Michigan was #8, Maryland #12, and Indiana #15.

A couple teams outside the Top 16 that ESPN had in: Notre Dame and Oregon. A couple teams likely close: BYU, North Carolina, and Ohio State.

So basically root against all the teams below Iowa. And also, if we get another big win we might be able to jump to the 3 line.

With the Fightin Fenneley's getting pummeled at home by 25 tonite, I think it's reasonable to expect ISU drops from a #2 to likely a #4? Certainly helps the Lady Hawks. Or doesn't hurt.

They might drop to a lower 2 seed (or even a 3), but I don't think one loss to a projected 2 seed would drop them that far. Michigan is still a 2 seed despite our blowout win yesterday.

Funnier than hell... IC City High, with Psycho Joensy's daughter gets beat at the high school tourney today and his oldest daughter goes 4-19 tonite and fouls out in Ames.

Gonna be lot's of stuff getting busted at the hotel tonite for the clan.

Ashley is not the oldest. She has a big sister that played for Illinois a few years ago, around the same time as Gustafson. Back then we didn't hear much about dad's behavior, perhaps because there's really nothing to fight for when playing for the Illini.

Correction...his daughter who is a senior at ISU.

Here's a breakdown of the teams just ahead of us and who they play in their tournaments.

11- Arizona- Likely to play Colorado (a projected 8 seed) in the quarterfinal of the Pac-12 tournament. Likely to play Stanford after that. They aren't likely to improve their resume much.

12- Maryland- Should play Indiana in the quarterfinal of the Big Ten Tournament. If they lose that, we probably jump them if we beat Michigan in the semifinal. If they win, we might have to win the Big Ten Tournament to jump them.

13- Tennessee- Will likely play Georgia (a projected 6 seed) in the quarterfinal of the SEC Tournament. They would likely play LSU in the semifinal. Maybe we jump them if they lose to Georgia and we beat Northwestern? Not sure that's guaranteed. They have a good opportunity to boost their resume.

15- Indiana- Should move on to play Maryland in the quarterfinal. If they beat Maryland, they could jump us unless we beat Michigan.

16- Oklahoma- still play at Oklahoma State and vs. Kansas (a projected 9 seed) in the regular season, then the Big 12 tournament. They probably have to do damage in the tournament to jump us.

Notre Dame- Should play Georgia Tech (a projected 7 seed) in the ACC quarterfinal. They would likely play Louisville again if they win that. I don't see them jumping us unless they shock Louisville.

Oregon- Play USC or UCLA (non-tournament teams) in the quarterfinal of the Pac 12 tournament, then Washington State (projected 10 seed) or Utah (projected 9 seed) in the semifinal. Not sure they can jump us unless they win the Pac 12 tournament. They don't have many big chances to boost their resume.

Ohio State- Play Purdue or Michigan State (projected non-tournament teams) in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal, then the Indiana/Maryland winner. They probably wouldn't jump us without winning the Big Ten Tournament.

North Carolina- Should play Virginia Tech (projected 6 seed) in the quarterfinal of the ACC Tournament. Would play NC State after. They probably won't jump us unless they beat NC State.

Thoughts- If we win in the quarterfinal, we should lock up a top 4 seed. If we lose in the quarterfinal, then it will be a long wait until the brackets are announced. Also, if we beat Michigan again in the semifinal, I think a 3 seed is very much in play.

Nice rundown of the host contenders Braydon. More important than anything is taking care of business in the quarterfinal... especially if our opponent ends up being Northwestern. Judging by social media, the team has been celebrating our a share of the regular season title. And rightfully so. I just hope we get back down to earth and stay focused.

Someone please thank Nebraska. Their Covid pause freed up Illinois' schedule allowing us to get that game in. I'm sure Nebraska would be happy to know they played a part in Iowa's Championship!

Tennessee's leading scorer is out with a dislocated elbow, so they could well lose in the first round for their conference tournament and drop below Iowa.
