Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

Nice rundown of the host contenders Braydon. More important than anything is taking care of business in the quarterfinal... especially if our opponent ends up being Northwestern. Judging by social media, the team has been celebrating our a share of the regular season title. And rightfully so. I just hope we get back down to earth and stay focused.
If I had to guess I would assume they had the day off yesterday and hopefully they'll get back to work today to start preparing. Can't let up now.

We had Gabbie, Kylie and Caitlin in the press conference and they all said the same thing that they aren’t done yet. A big ten regular season title isn’t the only goal, so I expect them to refocus today and get back to work.

I'll add to this. While most are speculating that Iowa City will be hosting the NCAA tourney, those in the program want there to be no doubt about it, which willing the B1G tourney would do. Not earth shattering news by any means, but just want to calm the worriers about lack of focus over enjoying the celebration of being regular season champs.

First Team All Big Ten
- Caitlin Clark
- Monika Czinano

Second Team All Big Ten
- McKenna Warnock
I'm so glad McKenna got this recognition after being snubbed from even getting honorable mention last year! When she got reinserted into the lineup and absolutely went off at Indiana, I think she really showed outsiders how important she is to this team. We all already knew it but outsiders maybe didn't.

Hawk Central reports that Clark "has been named the Big Ten player of the year in a unanimous vote." Not sure this is right. Her name is not in all caps in either the coaches or media listing. When Gustafson won it in 2019, it was unanimous by the coaches (ALL CAPS), but not by the media. Doesn't really matter, but with the way the season ended, hard to vote for anybody other than Clark.

Doyle was unanimous as well.

Interesting! Here's a link to the official PDF listing all the honorees. Is it possible they no longer announce whether the POY, DPOY, or 6POY were unanimous? I say this because DPOY (Veronica Burton) and 6POY (Alexis Markowski) are also not printed in all caps, and I'd actually be more surprised if those players weren't unanimously chosen for those awards.

True? When I look back at the Big Ten announcement from 2020, I see that "Unanimous selections listed in ALL CAPS" but Doyle is listed as follows for the coaches and media selections: Player of the Year: Kathleen Doyle, Sr., G, Iowa; Player of the Year: Kathleen Doyle, Sr., G, Iowa. Thus, I read that as Doyle was not unanimous, by either the coaches or media.

In contrast, when I look back at the Big Ten announcement from 2019, I see the following for the coaches and media selections: Player of the Year: MEGAN GUSTAFSON, Iowa; Player of the Year: Megan Gustafson, Iowa. I read that as Gustafson was unanimous by the coaches, but not the media, for POY.

I wonder if Hawk Central regards "unanimous" as being selected by both the coaches and media. I don't think that is the correct usage. I think unanimous means that all the voters for a given selection, i.e. all the coaches, or all the voting media, voted for the same player for POY.

@KyleHuesmann since you follow the women more than most of us... what is the ceiling for Martin? I think we kind of know what's up with the other 4 starters but she's the one that's hit or miss.

Go Hawks!
Kind of confused by this, ceiling as in what she could develop into with her last year on campus, next season?

You see what she brings, and how her teammates/coaches talk about her. Glue, hustle, etc.

I guess what I'm asking if she will need to have more of a role on offense. I understand the majority of looks should go to CC and MC. I am wondering if she will need to be even more of an outside threat or be needed to take advantage of some matchups in the post? I know what she brings on defense... I just didn't know if she could see an expanded offensive role. That's all.

Gotcha. Obviously I'm not Kyle, so apologize for jumping him on this, just have more thoughts on Kate's game than others on the team due to a pretty solid connection.

I think the role that's she's in now is "all" that we'll see on offense: facilitate looks to the post, or to Caitlin, or when she's off the ball and her defender collapses, take the shot. Next year's team loses next to nothing in scoring from this squad, so I doubt she's going to be asked to expand her offensive role.

We'll never know her true ceiling because she'll never be asked to be a significant offensive contributor (except during blowouts). Which is fine. With three bucket-fillers on the team, the majority of the shots will go through them. She's expected to take the wide-open jumper and occasionally drive to keep the defense honest.

I think everyone is pretty spot on in their assessment of Kate Martin. She will never be asked to score 20 points in a game and I don’t think she is the type of player that can do that. Maybe a time or two.

They don’t need that from Kate. What they need is what she has done most of the season and most recently vs Michigan. 8 points, couple 3pt makes, 6 defensive rebounds and 6 assists. She led the team with a +29 +/- and she leads the team in the majority of games. She, along with Gabbie are the best defenders on the team as well.

Lisa has said it many times. Kate goes unnoticed because she isn’t Caitlin or Monika or McKenna. Kate’s roll is on the same line as Connor McCaffery and she does it well.

Spot on, except also, thankfully, she isn't the target of the same vile message board comments that Connor is.

Kate can score 20 points a game if called upon but as you said it's not her role. Her career high is 19 vs Penn State. She knocked down a few open threes in that game.

I think Kate should be a 10,8,5 type of player - 10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists on average. We do really need her to crash the boards. I'd like to see Bluder shift positioning a little so Kate is playing closer to the basket and McKenna is more on the perimeter because Kate is such a great cutter.

I think where Kate can improve next year is to take the shots that are open and don't always look to pass. I know we're trying to get the ball to Caitlin and Monika but if you're open you've got to shoot. No reason she can't get 10 a night just taking what the defense gives her. She also needs to work on defending without fouling (some of this is incompetent refs) as she usually gets into a little bit of foul trouble and the team is better with her in the game.

Also needs to work on her ball handling to take the pressure off Caitlin. Her and Kylie are already doing this some but still needs to improve. And continue to improve in rebounding, especially looking for offensive rebounds. She showed she's a good rebounder when McKenna was out and she was playing more as a 4 with Tomi playing more as the 3.

SIAP - Of the three seniors, Monica returning for next year; Logan isn't; what is Tomi's status?

She has not said either way. I get the feeling she is moving on. Coach Bluder was cryptic when talking about it but I think she is concerned about minutes distribution. It wasn't what Bluder said just more how she said it that makes me believe no one else will be coming back.

If I were Tomi I would pursue a grad transfer. I think there's a lot of teams she could start for -- even a few P5 schools. She probably could play a few years overseas too if she wants. But she may be ready to move on to life after basketball. Not sure what she's looking at for a career path.

Thanks all! I hope nobody took my comment as a slight on Martin. I think she does her role well, much like Connor. Just curious what she had for offensive firepower since she isn't asked to use it much.

Both Tomi and Logan are moving on. I believe Jeff Linder had an article before senior day that said Coach Bluder sat down with both before the season and said that they wouldn't be coming back for the extra year at Iowa.

Does anyone that follows the women's program know if they are giving at least a look at 6'3" C Audi Crooks out of Bishop Garrigan (Algona)?

The ISU site is saying Crooks will pick a college after the State tournament. Iowa has already offered and gotten visits IIRC.
Hmm if she’s choosing after the state tournament, I feel like Iowa has a good shot at getting her. Not sure what other schools have been doing recruiting wise, but I know Bluder and Jensen have went to watch her play a couple times and she visited for an Iowa game a while back with the 3 2022 commits.

Without knowing her priorities, the trips from Algona to Ames would sure be easy for family and friends.

But you would have to think the successes of MG and Monica would play in Iowa's favor.

Gotta think it comes down to ISU or Iowa.

Iowa usually takes 3-4 players in a class, but has no commits for 2023. Iowa State has 3 commits already in 2023 (though none are likely to play the 5). Iowa State is also more active in the transfer portal than we are.

When considering transfers and players possibly taking an extra Covid year, it's possible, though perhaps not likely, that Iowa State is done with its class of high school recruits for 2023.

Her style would fit more with Iowa than Iowa State.

I can't remember the last time ISU had a true feed-the-post Center with their offense.

Iowa has had several over the years, though our recent success with that position should only help encourage players to come to Iowa to play that position.......one would think........right?

Something worth monitoring: Arizona currently trails Colorado 24-22 at halftime of the Pac-12 quarterfinal game. Arizona was #11 (a 3-seed) in the NCAA selection committee's recent ranking.

If we make the Big Ten Tournament final and Arizona loses this game, I have to think we jump them. We would then only need to jump one other team (and not get jumped by anyone else) to get a 3 seed.

NCAA TOURNAMENT PROJECTIONS

-3 SEEDS-
Arizona (20-7) - lost to Colorado
Texas (22-6) - vs Oklahoma St
Connecticut (22-5) - vs Providence/Georgetown
Maryland (21-7) - vs Indiana

- 4 SEEDS-
Iowa (20-7) - vs Northwestern/Minnesota
Oklahoma (23-6) - vs Kansas
Indiana (20-7) - defeated Rutgers vs Maryland
Notre Dame (21-7) - vs GT/Wake

-5 SEEDS-
Oregon (19-10) - vs UCLA
BYU (25-2) - vs TBD
North Carolina (23-5) - vs Virginia Tech
Tennessee (22-7) - vs Alabama/Georgia

Arizona has been without their best player Cate Reese for a few games. The selection committee takes that into consideration in regards to seeding. BTW... Arizona did lose 45-43.

Kyle you flipped Tennessee and Notre Dame. Tennessee was #13 in the Selection Committee reveal while Notre Dame wasn't in the top 16.
