Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

Colorado is EXTREMELY physical. Thrive on creating chaos then slowing it down when nothing easy is there. Think Rutgers/Northwestern type game. Can easily lose that game if we don't take care of the ball or give up too many rebounds. They gave Stanford a run for their money this year and beat them last year.

Creighton has an average post and lots of guards who can score. Comparable to Nebraska. We played Creighton in a preseason scrimmage and reportedly won by 5. Can easily lose that game with too many defensive lapses.
UCF is another good comp. They're both 7 seeds and we played UCF in Carver earlier in the year. UCF was better defensively and better on the offensive glass, but UCF also played in a weaker conference.

I'm not saying playing Colorado would be easy. Just that I like playing them a lot more than playing a team like Kentucky.

Purdue and Minnesota are in the WNIT but not Northwestern or Michigan St. They must have both turned down the bid:

So often the point guards are the difference,I like us to face ISU in the sweet 16.

We might, but I would rather have had us in different regions, so both of us could have an opportunity to get to the Elite 8, but I'm getting ahead of myself here.

Now Friday isn't sold out. There are splotches of seats suddenly available. There is a group of about 20 seats available at midcourt, row ~34 in section NN.

Jeff Linder article on Illinois State: https://www.thegazette.com/hawkeye-...-we-have-a-tough-task-but-were-not-conceding/

“We know we have a tough task. But we’re not conceding; we’re preparing for this game with the intention of winning,” Gillespie said. “Either way, this is a great opportunity to showcase our players. Not long ago, we were the worst team in The Valley. To get this program to where it needs to be, to get to play in the national spotlight for two hours Friday, it’s every kid’s dream.”

The player Jeff talks about most is Mary Crompton from Iowa City Regina because of the Iowa connection and because she played AAU for All Iowa Attack, but their best player is Juliunn "Juju" Redmond. 5'11'' guard, their leading scorer, most of it comes off the bounce at the rim or midrange, gets to the line a lot, can also facilitate. A good comparison in the Big Ten might be Grace Berger. I'm guessing Kate Martin will probably get that defensive assignment?

Here is a little bit more info about the Illinois State Redbirds: "To cap an unpredictable Missouri Valley Conference tournament in which neither of the top two seeds made the title game, the fourth-seeded Redbirds earned their spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008 after defeating 3-seed Northern Iowa for the championship. Illinois State took down top-seeded Southern Illinois to advance to the final. Guard JuJu Redmond, who led the league in scoring during the regular season, claimed tournament MVP."

I would agree that Grace Berger is a good comparison to Juju. I think Kate will be able to handle her well as Gabbie will probably be the one to guard Crompton.

With Mary Crompton and Lauren Jensen coming back to Iowa City, is the women's committee high on the dramatic or what? I wonder how many similar stories are happening at other hosting sites. Thinking back 3 years ago, they had to send Drake Iowa City's way.

They try to regionalize pairings when possible. I doubt the committee knew anything about Crompton or Jensen. They just had Creighton and Illinois State as a 10 seed and 15 seed respectively, and it was easier to send them to Iowa City than to Austin, Waco, or Storrs.

AFAICT, Friday is sold out. Sunday still has tickets available.
Probably a pretty silly question, but I thought when I bought tickets they were for all 3 games..... is that not the case? Haven't gotten mine on the app yet,, so you have me a bit concerned

Just did the stub hub thing for tickets Friday. I haven’t been to a game in CHA in a few years. Can’t wait. I believe it was $42 before fees. How much did I get stuck up for? I’m afraid to ask.

Are the first weekend of wbb tournament games available free online?
Should be able to stream them from WatchESPN.com. Usually they'll split them up between the different ESPN channels and ABC. From the WatchESPN app all the games appear to be free (cable provider sign-in is required). There's also a preview show that you need an ESPN+ subscription to view.

When I login with my Mediacom provider it still says that I need to authenticate.

The last time Iowa hosted in 2019, they set the combined sessions record with 23,096. This year Iowa will sellout both for ~28,700.

---

Iowa’s 68-52 second-round win over Missouri had the sixth-highest attendance for a second-round game with 12,096 fans.

To put that in perspective, the 12,096 fans who showed up was more than the combined two-day attendance numbers at 11 other sites, including Ames and College Park, Maryland.

Overall, Iowa packed a total two-day attendance of 23,096, which athletics media coordinator Aaron Blau confirmed was a new NCAA women’s record for total attendance at a first/second round site.

At that time the men's team was also playing. Lots of excitement. I hope people don't stay home or keep quiet with the men's defeat today.

I doubt the men's defeat will have anything to do with today's support and attendance. If anything, I think Iowa fans are looking for something to make themselves feel better.

Two for me. If you count Iowa Wrestling.
I usually make fun of people who give up on the wrestlers before the tournament is over but.....

that quarterfinal round was quite the collapse..... nice thing about wrestling long as there’s guys still alive in the tournament there’s something to root for.... it’s about individual accomplishments now
