Hawkeye Women’s BBall Season 2021-2022

Its possible that improvement on turnovers and learning to play through the physical contact without getting frustrated might pay better dividends? Improved defense would be great, but is going to be limited until there is a good option for backup point guard. Its asking a lot to be the most energetic on offense and defense while also playing 40 minutes a game.
I'm not really asking her to be more energetic per se. Just more observant. Offensively she has some of the best court vision in basketball, college or pro. That should translate to defense too (because she should be able to anticipate where the ball is going). And you can see it sometimes. When she does jump passing lanes, she's making her move before the pass is even made. Her jumped pass runouts are beautiful because you can predict what's going to happen and then she executes it perfectly.

But many other times throughout the game she's the last player to rotate. Sometimes she doesn't even move until the player she's supposed to rotate to has the ball. And I don't know why that is. It's like her brain goes into passive mode or something. I don't think it's about conserving energy, because she makes the rotation eventually. It's just really late.

*per se (It's Latin.) Everything else right on. Great players find something to add to their game every year. I expect Caitlin will do as you said.

Here's an interesting article discussing Clark and Boston. My biggest takeaway: a WNBA talent evaluator thinks that Clark can be a very good defender in the WNBA if she is taught better defensive techniques. I think it's probably worth Clark or the coaches reaching out to coaches in the WNBA to see what they can learn to help Clark's defense.

We're probably never going to ask Clark to guard the other team's best offensive players all game. That's not a great use of her energy when we need her so much on offense. But if she can start forcing more turnovers and pick up the other team's best players late, that would go a long way in making our defense even better.

As long as Clark has to play 38 minutes to keep the offense going, I'm fine with her holding back defensively.

We've all seen what that team looks like when she's not on the court yet so we got to keep her out of trouble and the ball in her hand.

Not a fan of the ESPN Bracketology this morning, which has the following 2-3 matchups, if the brackets proceed as seeded:

UCONN vs Iowa at UCONN (Bridgeport)
ISU vs Michigan
LSU vs Texas
Baylor vs Tennessee

Would love to trade places with Michigan or Texas.

Good thing is Charlie Creme’s predictions usually aren’t spot on from the committee. So let’s hope they stick us in the Midwest region

Without doing a ton of research, my order of preference for realistic Sweet 16 opponents is:

1) Iowa State- I don't think there's a prohibition on rematches in the Sweet 16, though I'm not sure the Committee would actually do it. I think we're a better team than Iowa State, so I would love this matchup.

2) LSU- One of the weaker potential 2 seeds. Any team we play in the Sweet 16 will be good. None of their metrics really scare me all that much.

3) Texas- Again one of the weaker potential 2 seeds. A defensive-focused team is a bit scary, though. How will we do against a team that defends better than Northwestern?

4) Louisville- They might drop down to a 2 if Baylor wins the Big 12. That they were a 1 seed most of the year means they are talented. They are also a good defensive team.

5) Baylor- They are playing really well right now, and I think NaLyssa Smith would absolutely destroy us.

6) UConn- They might be the most talented team in the country when healthy. I really, really want to avoid UConn again. Maybe the Committee won't make the same matchup again in two consecutive years?

Outside of Iowa St. I think we are one year away from being realistic able to compete with the 2 or even 1 seeds.

Not impressed with LSU. I think LSU is also beatable. If Caitlin is hot, we could keep it close but this year there is likely more parody than ever before thanks to the transfer portal.

Parody or parity?

Games to follow today with potential Iowa City Regional impact

- Ball State defeats projected #13 seed Toledo.
- 23-8 Buffalo vs Akron (Buffalo is new MAC favorite)
- projected #14 S Illinois vs Indiana St
- projected #14 Charlotte vs N Texas
- projected #10 Princeton vs Harvard
- projected #11 Missouri St vs Drake

Shakira Austin for Ole Miss is a 6-5 transfer from Maryland. She would be a match-up nightmare.
Agreed. And Charlie Creme has consistently had them in Iowa City. Any SEC team you play is going to be tough. They’re very physical. We’ll see what happens on Selection Sunday.

Defending Austin certainly wouldn't be fun, but it might actually be one of the better matchups we could hope for. Michigan is a similar team to Ole Miss (star post, questionable three-point shooting), except Hillmon has been better than Austin, and Michigan's shooters have been better than Ole Miss's shooters.

I'd rather play Ole Miss than a team like Kentucky that is red hot. Or say one of the projected 5 seeds that the Committee likes less than Creme.

This, and it would be a home game, hopefully a Sunday afternoon game with a large crowd or maybe a sellout.
Everything fell into our lap through out the Big Tourney, let it keep going.

Southern Illinois falls to Illinois State in the MVC semifinals. So shakeup on the #14 seed line.

Charlotte, Belmont, Buffalo and UT Arlington still in play. Wildcard could be Delaware. Drexel is projected a #13, but if Delaware knocks them off tomorrow, maybe the Blue Hens are a #14 seed.

Updated bracketology:
- Charlie Creme has us playing #14 Fairfield and continues to have #6 Ole Miss and #11 Washington State in the other game
- Creme has moved us to the Greensboro region with the possibility of playing #2 Iowa State in Sweet 16 if both teams were to make it that far

That would be ideal. If I could wish that into existence tomorrow, I would.

Kentucky also has a score to settle, we don't want to play them.

2 Seed and Iowa State in the Sweet 16!

Illinois State is our 15 seed. Colorado and Creighton in the 7/10 game.
Caitlin Clark effect sets up lots of potential storylines. Lauren Jensen playing for Creighton potential 2nd round match up. Possible meeting Iowa State in Sweet 16 and then S.Carolina Boston vs Clark in the Elite Eight

I think this is about as good as we could've hoped for. A great shot to get to the Elite Eight, and Arizona could absolutely upset South Carolina.

I was actually thinking the same thing. And even if they don't I like the matchup. Let Boston get what she's gonna get and shut down the guards and SC is beatable. Attack the rim on offense. That's how UK beat them.

Colorado and Creighton are both very good though
We weren't going to play a bad team in the second round. Colorado/Creighton were on the weaker end of teams we could've played.

Digging into the numbers a bit more, Creighton seems like a team we typically do well against. They are an offensive team that doesn't play great defense. They also don't grab a ton of offensive rebounds. If they shoot well, things could get interesting, but Lauren Jensen is their best shooter, and basically everyone in the rotation should be familiar with her tendencies.

Colorado is a more defensive team that doesn't shoot well from three or two. They also don't do particularly well on the offensive glass. The one area they excel at is steals, so taking care of the ball will be important. Still, as long as our offense isn't really off, I feel good about beating them. They tend to win really low scoring games, and we don't really play those.

Colorado is EXTREMELY physical. Thrive on creating chaos then slowing it down when nothing easy is there. Think Rutgers/Northwestern type game. Can easily lose that game if we don't take care of the ball or give up too many rebounds. They gave Stanford a run for their money this year and beat them last year.

Creighton has an average post and lots of guards who can score. Comparable to Nebraska. We played Creighton in a preseason scrimmage and reportedly won by 5. Can easily lose that game with too many defensive lapses.
