Hawkeye Women's BBall Season 2022-2023

I really don't think we need a transfer at the 4 or 5 and unless theres an AA out there we shouldn't take one. We may have more pressing needs at the 3 depending on who comes back next year and whether or not Kylie is 100%.
Don’t we have some ample options at the 3 with Martin, Feuerbach, and Affolter? I also recall Bluder saying in an interview she’d like to try Jada at the 3 after her freshman year.

Do we know O'Grady wants to be a 4? Anyone got a source for that or is that just fan rumors?
Probably because she played three years with the best high school center in the country, 6'7'' Lauren Betts. Speaking of whom, how is Betts doing at Stanford? I certainly haven't heard any talk about her playing this season.

Things certainly change! I remember Jada Gyamfi was recruited as a 4 and Stuelke as a 3, and now, just from a physique point of view, Stuelke is actually taller than Gyamfi.

No guarantee that Kate comes back and Kylie is coming off an injury. So right now we have Syn and Shateah who has shown in flashes but hasn't really played any significant minutes. Hard to know what Jada can do until we see more of her.

With Martin apparently all but sure to be returning and Warnock all but sure to be graduating, I think Stuelke will take over at the 5 and Bluder will go to the portal to look for a (hopefully athletic) 4 to replace Warnock.

Like last year, when Bluder let Tomi graduate even tho we had a roster spot available, I knew she was going to be portaling. Letting both Warnock and Marshall graduate signals the same intent to me. As with Feuerbach and Davis, I think she would like to find someone she can get more than one year out of.

I still worry about our 2 spot tho. Feuerbach is quick and scrappy so I like her on the floor but as far as I know has never been a major 3 pt threat (am I wrong? I hope so) and is likely to be slowed due to recovery next year. McCabe has the shooting skills but clearly isn’t strong or big enough to start (yet). Davis has not proven she has earned a starting spot yet. I highly doubt KJE will immediately be a starter or major role player.

Unfortunately we only have one spot to fill from the portal, so I’m hopeful one of those players is able to break thru and shine. Or maybe Bluder will opt to let our existing Forwards prove themselves (maybe Jada? I kind of forget she is even there sometimes lol) and look for an impact SG like Sydney Parrish instead.

I would absolutely love to be wrong, but based on this year alone, I find it hard to believe O’Grady will break thru at either the 4 (not quick enough) or 5 (doesn’t want it). I’m not sure how Edigar would fit in either. I think Goodman will fit in as Hannah’s backup, and likely get some quality minutes in that role.

I also see Affolter continuing to get minutes as the primary backup for Martin.
It just seems unfair to Hanna to have her playing the 5 in the Iowa scheme. She will never be a 5 at the next level. If she can develop a decent midrange shot she could be a terror at the 4. No?

I think Warnock is a solid 3rd scorer. After that there’s quite a cliff tho.
Warnock's contribution on offense is as a stand still 3 point shooter. A valuable player for sure, but very easy to take away if there are no other shooters on the court (other than Clark). Warnock is better when she is on the court with another shooter (Marshall 2-3 years ago).

Bottom line, Iowa is a very good team right now, however, if they want to make the Final 4 or Elite Eight, they are going to need someone to step up and contribute more.

Options:
Davis - If she could play more like the attacking player she was at Central Michigan it would really help out. We have seen glimpses of it but seems like she doesn't feel like she has the green light to cut it loose.

Marshall - Gabbie has been a great Hawk, but I think I've just about given up on the idea that she can be an offensive threat.

Affolter/McCabe - I don't see either getting the needed minutes to make an impact. I wish Affolter would get more 5 minute stretches on the floor so she can get in some kind of offensive rhythm. Right now it either a missed 3, or a drive to the basket.

Martin - Similar to Marshall but not nearly as bad. Kate usually will knock down a big 3 at some point during the game, but then disappears for long stretches. For as athletic as she is, seems like she could be scoring more on pull ups or drives to the basket.

Just watched the Rutgers game.

Affolter is rly proving her recruiting reputation. Maybe not a player who can make a huge contribution vs OSU or IU. But certainly a player who can compete in a typical B1G game. She is giving me major Kate Martin vibes. But likely a better handle on the ball. Good to see someone confident in her drive.

O’Grady’s minutes looked like last year’s. A smooth jumpshot, strong, reliable. It’s been a LONG time since I’ve seen that. Still hoping she might be the player we all thought she’d be.

McCabe’s trigger….very impressive. Really hope she will come through as the 3 pt assassin we need.

Reading some of the comments about who replaces Cziano next year is head scratching. I like them all but in regards to development it's blatantly obvious O'Grady, Ediger, and then Goodman, in that order. The drop off from where O'Grady is playing at to Ediger/Goodman is huge.

When Goodman is fully healthy she will surprise everyone. She looked like the next Jamie Cavey as a freshman. Her shot is a little off this year and she hasn't run the floor quite as well. She was excellent as a rebounder and a solid defender in the post. I would not count her out just yet.

We haven't seen enough of Ediger to know what she can do. She rebounds well and can score under the basket. She definitely needs to work on her range if she wants to contend for starters minutes.

O'Grady has flashed at times this year and at other times she's looked very uncoordinated. Still like what she brings but she's not cemented in the position. Perhaps she's lost confidence. She needs to be more physical and play through people. Not boxing out is what has frustrated me the most this year. She could also start at the 4 next year.

Hannah Stuelke has made the strongest case for starting 5 next year but she could also start at the 4. Probably going to be some experimentation in the offseason. Stuelke's athleticism and speed make her a game changer no matter which position she plays.

So assuming Kate's answer is Yes, she is returning, obviously that affects people behind her, most notably Affolter. The thing you hate about COVID year "super seniors" is the possibility of players behind them transferring, especially young ones. If Warnock stays (I don't think people anticipate that happening) that affects players greatly too, although one could argue Warnock is more needed for next year than Martin due to losing scoring with Czinano departure. Interesting all around.
I said the same thing on the football board when Shannon and Evans announced their returns. Some people disagreed. Both are solid starters, but do you risk gaining one extra year of a solid starter and having a potential even better player who has three years left leaving? I'll be glad when this covid super senior thing is over.

The NCAA should have just changed their policy and gave student athletes six years to play five instead of the extra covid year.

A lot of interesting stuff here. CC22 the unanimous POY pick. Not too surprising…but Creme has Iowa over UConn in the final 4. He is usually relatively cool on us, wasn’t expecting that from him.

More interestingly, does that mean he anticipates Iowa as the top 2 seed and UConn the last 1? Would be more ideal for us if we could somehow play Stanford IMO, but I think that path only emerges if we beat IU (maybe need to do it twice).

Also, not a single pick for Joens as an AA…. What happened to her? Meanwhile Diamond Miller is back on top and a unanimous pick as well.

re: Joens I think they're only allowed to pick 3 forwards and forwards are absolutely stacked this year. If that's true, two of Boston, Siegrist, Holmes, Reese, and Brink won't make it. I think all 5 are ahead of Joens for fowards. Frankly Miller is only in the conversation because of the two guard requirement. Clark is the only guard on the level of those 5 posts.

re: Iowa/UConn. Yes, I think that's what Creme is thinking. That or he has UConn falling off, LSU jumping up to a 1, then Iowa beating LSU. A lot of UConn's season is going to depend on their health. If they get Fudd back, they're dangerous. If not, they're vulnerable and we would want to end up in their bracket.

I thought it was interesting that Creme said Clark was clear frontrunner for POY (which I think is true) but the others thought it was close.

I didn’t even know Siegrist was a forward. I assumed she was a SG just based on her numbers (I’ve never seen a Nova game). The more you know.

I'd call her a "finesse 4." She's not the most athletic but she can score in more ways than arguably any other active NCAA player-- post up, spot up, coming off screens, creating for herself 1-on-1, etc. Her offensive versatility is elite to the degree that whoever guards her, she has the skillset to make it a mismatch somehow. It's incredible to watch her.

There are 6 on-going POY awards with substantial histories (can’t find history of espnW):

Honda-since 1977
Wade-since 1978
Naismith-since 1983
USBWA-since 1988
AP-since 1995
Wooden-since 2004

No BIG player has ever won both the Wade and Naismith, and only 2 BIG players (Steph White and Gustafson) have ever won 2 of the 3 oldest awards. My guess is that this year may be more like 2019, with 2 and a small chance of 3 players sharing the 6 major awards.

Gustafson won 4 of the 6 POY awards (not Wade and Wooden) to become the most nationally honored player in BIG history.

Michelle Edwards edit: She won the WBCA (coaches) POY award in 1988, an award that existed from 1983-2000. In 2001, the WBCA took over the Wade trophy, and discontinued the separate WBCA POY award.

Great game for Iowa tonight in spite of the slow start. We scored 5 point in the first and last 5 minutes of the game. In the 30 minutes in between, we scored 81 points. We shot 64% from the field, 43% Fromm the field. Held their best player to 7 points and 4 fouls in 15 minutes.

Ah, Lauren Jensen had a chance to tie the game for Creighton at UConn with two free throws at the 0.7s mark, but missed the first one. Had to intentionally miss the second one but UConn grabbed the rebound. Creighton had the lead in most of the 4th quarter but UConn came back late.

The refs looked like UConn paid them. Absolutely terrible, embarrassing officiating. The better team lost tonight. I’ve never been so mad about officiating before tbh.

Anyway, in more exciting news:

My guess is Kate Martin is officially announcing her return. Only other thing I could think of would be a recruit commitment but that would seem out of left field. Or maybe it’s ISU news.

I don't recall Linder teasing a recruiting commitment in the past, so I think it's the Martin news too.

This after asking people to guess and multiple people replied about Warnock/Martin/Marshall returning, Greenway committing, etc.

Very intriguing…

GameDay -- wow. Big spotlight for Caitlin Clark, Iowa WBB, Indiana WBB, and women's basketball in general.

Very cool.

It's the last Hurrah for ESPN, next season they will be cut out of the Big Ten media rights, no more Caitlin Clark games on ESPN channels, except the NCAA tournament.

The Iowa-Indiana women's basketball game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on February 26 has been sold out since February 3, but it looks like Iowa found room for a few more attendees — and a desk.

ESPN announced on Thursday morning that it was sending its College GameDay pregame show to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on February 26, ahead of No. 7 Iowa women's basketball's regular season finale against No. 2 Indiana.

“Our program is thrilled to be one of three schools selected this season to have College GameDay on our campus,” said Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder. “It’s a huge honor and we are looking forward to showcasing our program on one of the best stages in sports.”

It is the first time ever that ESPN has sent its College GameDay crew to Iowa City for a basketball game — men's or women's — and the first time GameDay has been at Iowa at all since 2006, for the Ohio State-Iowa football game.

Additionally, it is the fifth time College GameDay has ever broadcast from a women's basketball game, and the second of three planned appearances at women's games this season.

Elle Duncan will host the show, with ESPN analysts Andraya Carter, Rebecca Lobo, Carolyn Peck and Holly Rowe also at Carver.

Defensively we have gotten off to really lazy starts in all of our recent meetings with Nebraska. They're averaging 21+ point in the first quarter against us. Here are the first quarter scores of all the matchups in the "Clark" era:
-Jan. 28, 2023 (home): trailed by 6 (15-21)
-Mar. 5, 2022 (BTT): trailed by 3 (17-20)
-Jan. 16, 2022 (home): trailed by 16 (14-30)
-Jan. 9, 2022 (away): led by 3 (27-24)
-Mar. 1, 2021 (home): trailed by 2 (18-20)
-Feb. 11, 2021 (away): led by 6 (29-23)

With 2 really tough conference games left to play, will be interesting to see if Iowa can secure the most conference victories in Bluder’s tenure. Bluder has won 14 conference games 5 times, including this year, but never 15. Bluder has also never won at Maryland. So 2 big opportunities this week for Bluder to raise the ceiling on her list of accomplishments.

FYI there is another thread with discussion about this development. Not that we can’t talk about it here :)
Oops! This is bad of me but I just assume all the WBB stuff goes in this one thread lmao. I was surprised to log in here to see it not posted! Deleting my original post.

FWIW, ESPN has us 5th overall and a 2 seed in its latest bracketology. If we go 1-1 this week, I imagine we'd hold that position. We'd have an extra Top 10 win to counter the extra loss.

Not sure what 2-0 would mean. On the one hand, it's hard to put us above UConn given that UConn beat us. On the other, they beat us with Fudd and Fudd still isn't healthy. UConn looks much more shaky at the moment without her.

I suppose 4th or 5th overall isn't a huge difference, so it really won't matter more than giving us slightly easier opponents in the first few rounds if we're a 1 seed.
