Hawkeye Women's Hoop season

Gabby needs to drive as she and Kate are adding very little to our offense. Better have a couple shooters in next years class or Clark will be wasted

What is the prospect of Wetering? She is said to be very athletic. Didn't see the limited time she played this season.

I think Kate adds quite a bit. My problem with Gabbie is that she hesitates. She needs to work on having a quick release. Clark will find her often on cross court passes for corner 3s and she hesitates allowing the defender to close. If she would release quicker or side step fake she has a high percentage shot.

She's a good athlete, but pretty raw as a basketball player. She made some strides in that regard her senior year, and I wondered coming into this year if she might become Warnock's primary backup at the 4. Clearly that hasn't happened.

Long term, I'm not sure that she'll ever find much of a role barring injury. She's a 4 that can also probably play the 3 if needed. Warnock will probably be the starting 4 for two (or even three) more years, and I think Ediger will be her primary backup starting next year. Martin also has two (or three) more years, and Taiwo, Jensen, and Affolter will all compete for minutes at the 3 moving forward.

It's not impossible that she could grow and jump others on the depth chart. Her athleticism would be nice to have on the court. But I don't think that's particularly likely to happen.

When adding Stuelke & Gyamfi who are skilled players who can play both the 3 or 4 it isn't looking good right now at least for Shateah carving out a role. Much like Logan Cook has an opportunity this year to play a role, but next year it is unlikely she will get off the bench much. I like to see all the Hawks do well, but what this means is the talent level is increasing, Another example is Lexi is stuck on the bench after playing a fairly significant role for 3 years including getting some starts.

41 - 35 Iowa over NE at halftime. Clark with 18 points Monica and Sharon have combined for six missed bunnies or the lead would be double digits

Yet some think she’s not one of the best pg’s in the country. Heck she’s one of the best players overall.

She gets overly criticized for turnovers. She makes mistakes but some is also the lack of offensive awareness of teammates. She does need to take a little mustard off sometimes though. Once her touch gets better and team develops more awareness we could see consistent triple double nights from her

I think she definitely makes way too many turnovers even for a freshman but I hope to see a lot of improvement in that area for her. Although she does make it up for the in her just her overall game. She's got nasty range.

Hawks with a great road win, in a place where Ohio State lost. They are starting to grow up. Still some work to do.

I should have a recap up later (edit here), but I started tracking the points that individual defenders on our team gave up tonight. Here's a quick explanation of my methodology and tonight's results:

For every defensive possession in which Nebraska scored, I awarded points to the defender I thought responsible. So if a defender was guarding a wing and that wing shot a three-pointer over her, I gave the defender three points. If a player threw a bad pass and it led to a runout layup, I gave that player 2 points. If two defenders both made mistakes and it resulted in a 2-point basket, I split the points 1 to 1 between them. I also have a “team” category if it isn’t clear who was responsible for the points surrendered defensively.

The intent of this stat is to show which players are giving up the most points defensively. The results from tonight are below. For context, I first show how many minutes a player played, then how many points they are responsible for. Because I split points, it’s possible for a player to be responsible for half points.

Clark: 38 min—13 pts

Marshall: 33min—11 pts

Martin: 31min—9.5 pts

Warnock: 34min—13 pts

Czinano: 29 min—10 pts

Meyer: 8 min—0 pts

Taiwo: 17min—14.5 pts

Cook: 1min—4 pts

Goodman: 9min— 3 pts

Team: 3 pts

I completely disagree with this. One it's almost impossible to assign fault when playing zone. Two you credit Tomi for 14.5 points which is negatively skewed against her. She played tough D all night. When she "gave up points" it was mostly 2nd chance points where she has a distinct height disadvantage.

You also don't account for 4 terrible calls against iowa. 3 obvious flops and a phantom foul against Taiwo where she never made any contact.

Efficiency ratings are a more useful analytic but unfortunately sidearm doesn't track it. If they did Tomi's efficiency would have been very high. The steal on the inbound and running the floor to score to end the half shows her value.

Most of Tomi's points allowed came late in the game when she got beat multiple times off the dribble and gave up a basket or fouled a shooter. Also when she fouled a three-point shooter.

Flops on offensive fouls don't impact defense. Clark also got called for one or two fouls where she made little contact. That will even out over a season.

It's not that hard to assign fault in a zone. I can see what zones a player is responsible for. If she's out of position because she's covering for a misplay of a teammate, I can assign points to both or to the one with the original misplay. It's not a be all end all stat, of course, but it can still help show what happens in a game.

Again the three point foul was a bad call. There was no contact. She was in late because of her defense and rebounding. If her defense was so poor Bluder would have pulled her in favor of Megan.

I've analyzed women's basketball for two decades are there is no way it's all on her.

I just went back and watched the replay. Taiwo's right leg clearly makes contact with the shooter's right leg as she's coming down. The contact made the shooter lose her balance and fall. That's a foul. It might be on the weaker end of fouls, but it's still a foul.

The stat on its own doesn't say whether a player's defense is good or poor. A couple years ago, anyone guarding Megan Gustafson probably would've given up the most points in a given game, even if they had a good game defending Gustafson. The stat is more about finding trends over a time. If a player is constantly giving up more points than her teammates, then there is probably an issue (unless that player is constantly guarding the other team's best scorer every game).

Caitlin Clark is the best basketball player to ever play for the University of Iowa, Men or Women and it might not be close. She is a dazzler and I've been watching Iowa basketball for over 60 years. Don't delay because she won't be here for 4 years.

Can you explain your basis for claiming she wont be at Iowa for 4 years? The average WNBA salary in 2020 is $100,000. CC is far from average so maybe she can ultimately claim one of the precious few "star" salaries which is $221,000 (I believe this includes revenue sharing which was increased in 2020). Some of the WNBA players go to Europe to play a second season to compensate for the WNBAs relatively low pay but then they are playing basketball nearly the entire year raising the risk of injury. Basic economic logic would suggest you finish your degree to have a "fall-back" plan for when a pro basketball career is over which for some is much shorter than they expect. If CC can complete her degree in 3 years, then she might jump to pro basketball but otherwise I think she stays for four seasons of Hawkeye basketball!
