****Hawks @ Terps Game Thread****

Do you not remember the ranked Iowa teams that would go on the road to ranked teams in the B1G and get blown out by 30? It wasn’t too long ago. Everything went right for Maryland, a lot went wrong for Iowa and the squad will lose by 10.

That’s the sign of a good team.
Yes, a lot went wrong - our bigs got themselves in foul trouble early; we missed a ton of shots, our perimeter D was pretty lazy, and our rebounding was atrocious.

I'm not dishing out credit for "being in the game" unless we're playing someone like Duke or Gonzaga.

9:16 left in the game, Iowa making a comeback, down 3, Garza shooting 1-and-1, misses front end.....I blinked and we were down 12.

We played hard and well at times, but our shooting and defensive rebounding were atrocious in the 2nd half. However, Maryland makes a lot of teams look bad on their home court, so it might not be as bad as it seems. I'm just worried that these off-nights shooting are becoming a little too common, and I greatly fear another late-season fade. Hopefully these guys can bounce back against Illinois, who didn't look particularly good at home today.

The freshmen guards looked like freshmen tonight. But they both continued to show flashes of outstanding play also.

CJ shot poorly early, Joe T made some real bone head plays (some terrible shots from leaving feet inside). But they both were defensive dogs from buzzer to buzzer. First time that a team has backed that far off C Mac all season, and it worked. If he can punish that tactic we're going to have a really good season.

Not a discouraging loss. Tough place to play, really talented adversary, felt like a long shot that didn't drop.

Let's skin those Cheatin' Illini.

Maryland made every late clock jumper, or rebounded the few misses. And the misses were BAD, long rebound misses that our guys just couldn’t get to. Cowen played his best game ever, super clean game.

This game changed on Kriener’s T. A good ref gives a guy like Kriener a warning. He has no history or rep. But sparkles overreacts and not only does it change momentum, it affects score and hamstrings Iowa the rest of the way.

These things drive me nuts because these refs are well-paid and ref three or four games a week, and they know players quite well by the time they’re upperclassmen. Refs should not overreact. Period. Kriener gets hit in the face, on the first block the Maryland guy said “get that shit out” Ryan recovers and scores, talks shit back to the guy, and he gets the T. Warn both guys like a frickin’ ref who knows what he’s doing.

As everyone knows I'm a very frequent critic of the officiating. There were some strange calls but nothing seem outlandish. The fouls remained fairly even throughout the game. Didn't really see anything more than the usual home court advantage.

This is a good point. Between that and Garza’s early suspect foul on the infamous moving screen at the top of the game makes many really question just how balanced officiating is when for road teams or a marquee team really needs a win at home.

That was a bullshit call and a big moment but we see so much more and more often its hard to be outraged by it.

It needs to be understood though that when the refs start calling lots of ticky tack fouls late in the game on the winning team, that they weren't calling the rest of the game, to "even" the foul count............................That's not a situation where the fouls were even.

Just sayin.

It seems there is just as much frustration with officials in Carver than there is on the road. Carver usually doesn’t get the home cooking seen at other venues.

I’m not outraged by the call so much as these are refs that know these guys really well and thus should have better judgment. There isn’t one guy on either team that I would T up for something like the Kriener talking.
