Game of Thrones or John Oliver get a lot of play in the press and the reality is that few people watch the channel or want to pay for it. It seems to me that its mostly hipsters.

More people watch America's Got Talent by the numbers. It looks like 6 million+ watch a Game of Thrones episode while 11 million watch America's Got Talent.

So its more about the demographic, but its not widely watched.

Wait.....are you trying to tell me that people watch something that is free(and family friendly) vs. something you have to pay to watch and is limited to mostly adult audiences?

There might be something to this.....

No, I am trying to say that stuff thats watched by very few people gets a lot of attention because hipsters watch it.

Have you given any thought to the fact that they might get attention because they are good shows?

If I watch AGT am I not a hipster? Can you give me your definition of a hipster while we're at it?

I like this definition from Urban Dictionary, although there are others.

"A hipster is someone who is smart enough to talk about philosophy, music, politics, art, etc. with you all day long, but not smart enough to see how big of a tool s/he is. The only sure fire way to tell if someone you're talking to is, in fact, a hipster is to ask them "are you a hipster?". If they respond no, and turn their casette player back on, you can be sure you're dealing with a hipster."

I think of skinny jeans with trimmed beards

Ok, I don't have facial hair or skinny jeans. I watched a couple seasons of AGT when Howard signed on but got tired of it. I finally binge watched all 5 seasons of GOT this spring and loved it. I think it's a great show.

So where do I fit in?

Also, you made no mention of how GOT might get attention because it's a good show? Have you ever seen it?

And does more viewers always equal a better show?

Its not just Game of Thrones....It could be John Oliver or any other show.

No, I don't watch it. I played D&D in the 80's

No, big audiences don't always make good shows....but they don't all get the hype either.

You have this backwards. They are not popular because of the hype, they are getting hype because they are great shows. I hate hipsters as much as the next guy, but these shows have nothing to do with hipsters.

I would say that someone saying "I played D & D in the 80's" is the most hipster thing anyone has said on these boards. lol

So a subscription channel with a show catered to an adult audience has less viewership than a show on a channel free to anyone with an antenna that is friendly to the whole family. Shocking development there.

Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men had/have huge viewership, but I think those shows suck balls. Just because a bunch of people watch something doesn't mean it is quality.

I specifically subscribe to HBO because their original series and documentaries are awesome. GoT, True Detective, Going Clear, The Robert Durst doc (to name a few) are all worth the price. Throw in some movies that are nice to have playing in the background and it's all gravy to me.

Also, not hipster. I am a nerd with a beard though. Does that make me hipster? Or do I need flannel patterns, skinny jeans, a satchel and ear gauges to achieve that status? I love sports and reject the silliness of how wrapped up I get in the abilities of people generally younger than me throwing a ball around. I suppose that automatically disqualifies me.

It's not hipsters, it's fans of good cinematography (old, young, trying to be cool or not trying to be cool). Were your numbers for the live audience from the debut of the episodes for the particular shows? I don't know how you can scoff at 6 million for an episode debut on a premium cable network. That's definitely something for the entertainment media to talk about. Way more interesting for fans of the medium than a televised carnival.
